Safety and role of ketogenic parenteral nutrition for intractable childhood epilepsy.

To retrospectively evaluate the safety and role of ketogenic parenteral nutrition in patients with intractable childhood epilepsy. The ketogenic parenteral nutrition was given to 10 patients who were unable to absorb nutrients through the intestinal tract because of various gastrointestinal disorders and required complete bowel rest. This nutrition consisted of conventional intravenous fat emulsion (20% Lipision) plus dextrose and amino acid (6% Trophamine) hyperalimentation in a 4:1 (or 3:1) lipid to non-lipid ratio, infused during the bowel rest. If the ketogenic parenteral nutrition allowed

Nutrition management of patients with epidermolysis bullosa.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a heterogeneous group of rare, inherited disorders, is manifested by recurrent blistering of the skin induced by the slightest trauma. Little information exists regarding the nutrition management of patients with EB. This study presents information on growth, identifies potential nutrition problems, and provides guidelines for nutrition management of persons with EB. Eighty patients attending a dermatology clinic for EB patients are described. Severity of disease ranged from mild blistering of the knees, elbows, and feet to extensive blistering and scarring of the s

Novel insights into the effect of vitamin B₁₂ and omega-3 fatty acids on brain function.

The prevalence of psychiatric disorders which are characterized by cognitive decline is increasing at an alarming rate and account for a significant proportion of the global disease burden. Evidences from human and animal studies indicate that neurocognitive development is influenced by various environmental factors including nutrition. It has been established that nutrition affects the brain throughout life. However, the mechanisms through which nutrition modulates mental health are still not well understood. It has been suggested that the deficiencies of both vitamin B12 and omega-3 fatty ac

Effects of a 16-Week Digital Intervention on Sports Nutrition Knowledge and Behavior in Female Endurance Athletes with Risk of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs).

Female endurance athletes are considered a high-risk group for developing Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs). Due to the lack of educational and behavioral intervention studies, targeting and evaluating the effects of the practical daily management of REDs, we developed the Food and nUtrition for Endurance athletes-a Learning (FUEL) program, consisting of 16 weekly online lectures and individual athlete-centered nutrition counseling every other week. We recruited female endurance athletes from Norway (n = 60), Sweden (n = 84), Ireland (n = 17), and Germany (n = 47). Fifty athletes with

A modified Mini Nutritional Assessment without BMI can effectively assess the nutritional status of neuropsychiatric patients.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES: To determine whether a modified version of the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) without body mass index (BMI) can effectively identify individuals at risk of malnutrition among patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric patients have an additional risk of nutritional disorder due to functional impairments and drug effects. However, their nutritional status is generally neglected. It is important to find a tool that is simple, easy to use and non-invasive. DESIGN: The study involved 105 patients in the acute phase of confirmed neuropsychiatric

Nutrition-related needs and considerations in the transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) population: Current gaps and future directions in research.

Transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals face significant health disparities despite growing visibility and awareness. Nutrition-related disparities are particularly concerning, with TGNC individuals experiencing higher rates of food insecurity, eating disorders, body dissatisfaction, and overweight or obesity. Gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) and other medical interventions lead to significant physiological changes that can influence nutritional needs, as well as body composition and bone mineral density, yet existing daily energy estimation equations do not account for

Biopsychosocial considerations to avoid and wean parenteral nutrition in patients without intestinal failure: An expert practice and position paper from the European society of clinical nutrition and metabolism and the Rome foundation.

The European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN), the European Society of Neuro-gastroenterology and Motility and the Rome Foundation for Disorders of Gut-Brain Interaction consensus is that parenteral nutrition (PN) should not be prescribed for patients without intestinal failure (IF), where the oral and/or enteral route can be used. In this further expert practice and position paper from ESPEN and the Rome Foundation, biopsychosocial considerations to avoid and wean PN in such patients without IF are described. These include specifically distinguishing between conditions suc

Impact of Mental Health Background and Nutrition Intake on Medium-Term Weight Loss in Japanese Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Bariatric surgery is the most effective weight loss therapy, and recently laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is gaining popularity worldwide. On the other hand, patients undergoing bariatric surgery have a high prevalence of mental disorders. A Japanese nationwide survey reported high prevalence of mental disorders in patients with low percent total weight loss (%TWL) and also in those with high %TWL. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship of 1-year %TWL with background mental health status, 3-year outcomes, and nutrition intake in Japanese patients after LSG.

Placental programming of chronic diseases, cancer and lifespan: a review.

Particular paths of fetal growth are now known to predict a range of disorders in adult life. This is thought to reflect fetal programming, the phenomenon whereby nutrition and other influences during development set the body's organs and systems for life. The thesis of this review is that normal variations in the processes of placental development lead to variations in the supply of nutrients to the fetus and programme a small number of key systems that are linked to later disease. A baby's growth and nutrition depend both on the function of the placenta, reflected in its gross morphology at

Philippines Case Study: Government Policies on Nutrition Education.

Government policies at the national and local levels are central to the promotion, protection, and implementation of sound food and nutrition concepts in the Philippines. According to the 2015 national nutrition survey, persistent malnutrition problems, such as protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies (anemia, vitamin A deficiency, and iodine-deficiency disorders), continue to afflict a major proportion of Filipinos. In the Philippines, nutrition education and promotion date back as early as 1900 with the conduct of educational campaigns directed towards the prevention and co

Death resulting from overzealous total parenteral nutrition: the refeeding syndrome revisited.

Although cachectic patients are relatively well adapted to their calorically deprived state, they are prone to acute metabolic imbalances when infused with hypertonic solutions of dextrose and amino acids. Of particular concern is hypophosphatemia and its associated disorders of cardiac, pulmonary, hematological, and neuromuscular functions. This report describes two chronically malnourished but stable patients who were given aggressive total parenteral nutrition support, which was rapidly followed by acute cardiopulmonary decompensation associated with severe hypophosphatemia and other metabo

Effects of nutrition and gestational alcohol consumption on fetal growth and development.

Fetal alcohol exposure can lead to a range of developmental disorders, including impaired fetal growth and development of multiple organ systems. These disorders are grouped under the term fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Adequate nutrition and a conducive intrauterine environment are essential for healthy fetal development. Nutrient deficiencies resulting from inadequate maternal nutrient ingestion may be compounded by alcohol-induced altered nutrient metabolism, placental clearance, and malabsorption. Alcohol-induced alteration of the intrauterine environment is the main source of d

Critical illness, gastrointestinal complications, and medication therapy during enteral feeding in critically ill adult patients.

Critically ill patients who are subjected to high stress or with severe injury can rapidly break down their body protein and energy stores. Unless adequate nutrition is provided, malnutrition and protein wasting may occur, which can negatively affect patient outcome. Enteral nutrition (EN) is the mainstay of nutrition support therapy in patients with a functional gastrointestinal (GI) tract who cannot take adequate oral nutrition. EN in critically ill patients provides the benefits of maintaining gut functionality, integrity, and immunity as well as decreasing infectious complications. However

Review article: artificial nutritional support for improved patient care.

Malnutrition is common and undiagnosed in the majority of affected hospital patients; it is associated with impaired organ function, morbidity, and increased length of hospital stay. Artificial nutritional support in malnourished patients leads to improvement in nutritional status and clinical outcome. Nutritional support is required in malnourished patients, patients who are unable to take normal diet and patients with intestinal failure. Gastroenterologists are required to supervise patients with intestinal failure, to insert endoscopic feeding devices, and increasingly to participate in, or

Perioperative nutrition problems. Nursing management.

Because critically ill surgical patients requiring nutritional support have altered metabolic pathways and are frequently hypermetabolic, catabolic, and hyperglycemic, nurses play an important role in monitoring their care. These metabolic changes place the patient at risk for rapid muscle wasting and nutritional depletion. Enteral and parenteral support provide specialized routes for the delivery of nutrients but have inherent risks and complications. Diarrhea and aspiration pneumonia are consistently reported complications of tube feeding on which nurses have a great impact. Further research

Nutritional support in the mechanically ventilated patient.

In summary, nutritional management of the intubated patient requires several decision steps. Nutritional support should be strongly considered if the patient has evidence of malnutrition by nutritional assessment or has a high likelihood of becoming malnourished by virtue of a severe, prolonged critical illness. Nutrition can be administered enterally if good gut function exists or parenterally in patients unable to tolerate enteral feeding. Nutritional goals in the intensive care unit include maintenance of body weight and lean body mass. Proper nutritional therapy includes assessment of adeq
