AIM: To report a case of non-syndromic oligodontia involving 26 permanent teeth in monozygotic twin sisters and to discuss the possible genetic etiology, inheritance pattern and associated dental anomalies of this condition.
BACKGROUND: Hypodontia constitutes one of the most common developmental anomalies in humans and is defined as developmental absence of one or more teeth with reported prevalence of 1.6 to 9.6% in the permanent dentition. Oligodontia is defined as agenesis of six or more teeth excluding third molars.
CASE REPORT: This article describes a case of non-syndromic oligodontia

Development and growth of odontogenic tumours depend on impairment of numerous genes and molecules. In recent years, most of the genes involved in dental development were identified. This produced a new basis for the study of oral pathology and maxillofacial carcinogenesis. A better understanding of these molecular phenomena should allow to better determine the evolution of such lesions. Research breakthroughs should facilitate the development of new molecular and genetic therapeutic perspectives.

Traumatic injuries to permanent teeth include coronal and root fractures, subluxations, luxations, and avulsions. The most common complications after avulsions are necrosis of the pulp and root resorption. Treatment is often complex, time consuming, and expensive and requires multidisciplinary approaches such as endodontic and periodontal treatments, surgery, orthodontic movements, as well as esthetic coronal restoration. This review describes new clinical modalities for the treatment of avulsed teeth and discusses the rationale for their use.

Vertebrate organs develop from epithelial and mesenchymal tissues, and during their early development they share common morphological features. These include condensation of the mesenchymal cells and thickening, folding or branching of epithelial sheets. Sequential and reciprocal interactions between the epithelial and mesenchymal tissues play central roles in regulation of the morphogenesis of all organs. During recent years increasing amounts of molecular data have accumulated from studies describing developmental changes in expression patterns of molecules, as well as from functional in vit

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a heritable generalized bone dysplasia presenting with a variety of dental abnormalities. To delineate morphological features of the dental tissues, we have analyzed histologically the structure of teeth and peridental tissues obtained from four CCD patients. Dentin appeared regular, except when formed in response to caries, physiological attrition or root resorption. Both acellular and cellular cementum were present in deciduous teeth, whereas in permanent teeth, cellular cementum was virtually lacking and acellular cementum was partially hyperplastic. Enamel

The distribution of IGF-I receptor is reported in the odontogenic epithelium and mesenchyme of the continuously erupting mandibular incisor of the rat by immunohistochemistry using a polyclonal antibody specific to the IGF-I receptor. Odontogenic epithelium is a unique odontogenic sequence in that all stages of the complex life cycle of the ameloblast are represented along the length of the enamel-forming aspect of the tooth. Pre-ameloblasts become post-mitotic before secreting enamel matrix. When the full thickness of the enamel has been formed, a remarkable transition in phenotype takes plac

Forming teeth of parrotfish and pufferfish were viewed by transmission electron microscopy to correlate cytological features of the enameloid organ with the species' fluoride (F) content in mature enameloid. Secretory-stage inner dental epithelial cells (IDE) of parrotfish (high F) and pufferfish (low F) secreted procollagen granules into the enameloid collagen matrix. The odontoblasts of both species, less numerous than IDE cells, also contained procollagen granules at the enameloid matrix formation stage. After the full thickness of enameloid matrix collagen had been deposited, enameloid cry

The close examination of the central osseous and/or parosteal lesions of the jaws must be reconducted to the study of the main fundamental embryonal processes that take place in the primordial stomodeus. Some pathological lesions can arise from the rests that survive after the disgregation of various odontogenic epithelial structures destined to disappear with growth: the epithelial root sheath, the dental lamina and the external epithelium of the enamel organ. Some osseous lesions can also originate from the nonodontogenic epithelial rests: this tissue comes from the uncompleted obliteration

Tenascin is an extracellular matrix molecule that was earlier shown to be enriched in embryonic mesenchyme surrounding the budding epithelium in various organs including the tooth. In the present study tenascin was localized by immunohistology throughout the course of tooth development in the mouse and rat using polyclonal antibodies against chick tenascin. The results indicate that tenascin is expressed by the lineage of dental mesenchymal cells throughout tooth ontogeny. The intensity of staining with tenascin antibodies in the dental papilla mesenchyme was temporarily reduced at cap stage w

Various forms of endodontic treatment may be used in an attempt to maintain pulpal vitality during the period of root formation. In teeth with advanced caries but with no clinical evidence of pulpitis, indirect pulp capping with the retention of a small amount of softened dentine in the base of the cavity is preferable to further excavation and direct capping of a resulting exposure. Direct capping of pulpal exposures in traumatized incisors is confined to teeth in which the tissue loss is limited and the exposure is small and recent. Where there is more serious contamination of the pulp, whet

BACKGROUND: Stunting has a negative impact on the growth and development of children, which include their susceptibility to dental caries. C … severe dental caries. Early childhood caries may increase vulnerability to dental caries by causing odontogenesis to fail, delayed tooth eruption and changes in the salivary glands. Children's ability to eat and sleep may be negatively impacted by untreated caries pain. It might result in decreased nutrient intake and poor appetite, while sleep disturbances mig …

OBJECTIVE: Irreversible pulpitis in immature teeth is a serious dental disease which may lead to unclosed apical foramen and even tooth loss … ingly, G-CSF had a slight effect on osteogenesis but significantly increased the gene expression of odontogenesis (DSPP, DMP-1). Laponite was observed to adsorb and slowly release G-CSF in a sustained manner, and the "laponite + collagen" contained micropore scaffold structure without biotoxicity for SCAPs. In vivo, 50 ng/ml G-CSF/laponite/collagen composite ap …

BACKGROUND: The process of odontogenesis is complex involving epithelial-mesenchymal interactions, along with the molecular signaling pathways triggering the initiating process. The triggering factors and cells precisely involved in the pathogenesis of odontogenic cysts and tumors are unknown. There is a vast array of biomarkers used to stain different sites, thereby helpful in diagnosing and evaluating the prognosis of these cysts and tumors. Cytokeratins are the intermediate filament proteins which maintain cell integrity and alter their properties in cysts and tumors. In the following study…

Dental Mesenchymal Cells (DMCs) are known to play a role in tooth development as well as in the repair and regeneration of dental tissue. A … enic differentiation. Further studies suggested that other factors may mediate the role of Sirt6 in odontogenesis. These include the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38-MAPK), extracellular regulated MAP kinase (ERK) pathways and the mitochondrial energy. We demonstrated that Sirt6 plays a role in tooth root formation and c …
