Development of hydrophobic polyurethane/castor oil biocomposites with agroindustrial residues for sorption of oils and organic solvents.

Since pollution of aquifer sources by organic compounds is a threat to the environment and humans, technology's constant advancement in developing sustainable adsorbents using renewable resources with hydrophobic characteristics has become increasingly attractive. In this study, we developed and characterized castor oil-based polyurethane biocomposites reinforced with malt and/or acerola residues for adsorption/separation of various organic oils/solvents. The residues evidenced biocomposite flexibility, increase in adsorption capacity for all organic oils/solvents, with a maximum of 3257.8 ± 5…

A Combination of Peppermint Oil and Caraway Oil for the Treatment of Functional Dyspepsia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

A combination of peppermint oil and caraway oil (POCO) with its unique properties has been shown clinical benefits for FD. However, the potent statistical data to confirm its effects are lacking. This meta-analysis thus aimed at evaluating the efficacy and safety of POCO compared with placebo in treating patients with FD. We searched CENTRAL, PubMed, EMBASE (Ovid), Web of Science, Google Scholar, China National Knowledge Infrastructure database, Wanfang, and VIP databases for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) up to June 2019. Dichotomous data were shown as a risk ratio (RR) with 95% confidence

Voltammetric fingerprinting of oils and its combination with chemometrics for the detection of extra virgin olive oil adulteration.

In the present work, two approaches for the voltammetric fingerprinting of oils and their combination with chemometrics were investigated in order to detect the adulteration of extra virgin olive oil with olive pomace oil as well as the most common seed oils, namely sunflower, soybean and corn oil. In particular, cyclic voltammograms of diluted extra virgin olive oils, regular (pure) olive oils (blends of refined olive oils with virgin olive oils), olive pomace oils and seed oils in presence of dichloromethane and 0.1 M of LiClO4 in EtOH as electrolyte were recorded at a glassy carbon working …

Tacit knowledge and risk perceptions: Tullow Oil and lay publics in Ghana's offshore oil region.

This study examines how local residents make sense of offshore oil production risks in Ghana's nascent petroleum industry. From a naturalistic-interpretive perspective, it is primarily based on in-depth interviews with community residents: 8 opinion leaders, 15 residents, and 1 journalist. Residents associate Tullow's oil activities with health concerns (e.g. conjunctivitis), environmental challenges (e.g. the emergence of decomposed seaweeds along the shore), and socio-economic concerns (e.g. loss of livelihoods, decline in fish harvest, and increased rent and cost of living). Focusing on how

Antiestrogenicity of clarified slurry oil and two crude oils in a human breast-cancer cell assay.

Exposure to crude oil and certain petroleum products can be a serious health hazard. Clarified slurry oil (CSO) is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons derived from the processing of crude oil, and is a known systemic and developmental toxicant, mutagen, and carcinogen. In the present study, CSO and two crude oils, Belridge heavy crude oil (BHCO) and Lost Hills light crude oil (LHLCO), were examined for their estrogenic and antiestrogenic properties in a human breast-cancer cell (MCF-7) assay. The MCF-7 focus assay is based on postconfluent cell growth and tissue restructuring, measured as the po…

Response of human ciliated respiratory cells to a mixture of menthol, eucalyptus oil and pine needle oil.

Nasal respiratory cells were harvested from 45 healthy individuals using a microcurette technique. Following harvest, cells were placed on m … ecrease -56.1% at a concentration of 9.4 g/m3, p < 0.01) was observed. The data show that essential oils in high concentrations can reduce in-vitro ciliary activity of human respiratory cells not protected by a mucus layer. These effects have to be verified by in vivo investigations.

Are Seed Oils the Culprit in Cardiometabolic and Chronic Diseases? A Narrative Review.

The demonization of seed oils "campaign" has become stronger over the decades. Despite the dietary guidelines provided by nutritional experts recommending the limiting of saturated fat intake and its replacement with unsaturated fat-rich food sources, some health experts ignore the dietary guidelines and the available human research evidence, suggesting the opposite. As contrarians, these individuals could easily shift public opinion so that dietary behavior moves away from intake of unsaturated fat-rich food sources (including seed oils) toward saturated fats, which is very concerning. Excess…
