The Waardenburg syndrome is a group of rare genetic diseases, which clinical manifestations include neurosensory hearing loss, diminished pigmentation of forelock in the frontal region, iris heterochromia, medial canthus dystopia, and the presence of such changes in first-line relatives. The article presents a clinical case of type I Waardenburg syndrome, which developed de novo in a family. This case is unique in its combination of complete bilateral iris heterochromia and impaired choroidal pigmentation. The choroid did not only have hypopigmentation zones, but also large areas of hyper- and

Nature has always provided an unlimited source of biologically-active compounds. Since the beginning of mankind, humans have sought resources in fauna and flora to treat eye diseases. However, it was only after the Industrial Revolution that extracts of plants and substances of animal origin could be used safely, as has been determined by controlled interventional studies. Two major challenges faced by ocular pharmacology are the following: developing drugs that are able to reduce blindness due to glaucoma; and controlling the pain associated with eye surgery. The search for a drug that effect

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this prospective, noncomparative consecutive study was to examine active and retired amateur boxers in order to evaluate the nature and incidence of ocular pathologic conditions related to the boxing practice.
RESULTS: A total of 35 boxers were included in this study. The mean age of the boxers was 28.09±7.57 years (range 18-52 years). Sixteen (45.7%) boxers had >5 years of boxing experience. Fifteen (42.85%) of the boxers reported wearing protective equipment in the bouts and sparring rounds. The number of bouts ranged from 3 to 103, with a median of 20 (interquart

Measles, caused by the Morbilli virus, is a highly (about 95 %) contagious disease affecting primarily children, but without proper immunisation, adults can also be infected. The leading symptoms of the disease are high fever that presents after an incubation period of 9-10 days and the red rash that begins several days after the fever starts. Beyond specific generalized symptoms, measles may have ocular symptoms. The most commonly occurring conjunctivitis, the so-called "red eye symptom", is not characteristic only for measles infection, however, by taking the generalized symptoms it can sugg

Neurofibromatosis type 1, tuberous sclerosis complex, and Von Hippel-Lindau disease, historically classified as the phakomatoses, are hereditary multisystem disorders characterized by the presence of hamartoma, which carry the risk of malignant transformation. The alteration of tumor suppressor genes seems to be at the basis of their pathophysiogenetic mechanism. Lisch and choroidal nodules in neurofibromatosis type 1, retinal astrocytomas in tuberous sclerosis complex, and retinal capillary hemangioma in Von Hippel-Lindau disease are the principal ophthalmic hamartomatous manifestations. The

In this study, the authors retrospectively identified 11 patients with psychogenic ophthalmologic movement disorders (POMDs) (6%) among 182 patients with psychogenic movement disorders (PMDs), using medical charts and video reviews. The phenomenology included oculogyric crises (N=7), opsoclonus (N=5), and ocular flutter (N=1). No statistically significant differences were observed in gender and PMD distribution between patients with and without POMDs, although a trend for younger age at onset was observed in patients with POMDs. Seven patients showed improvement with psychotherapy, whereas two

Dizziness stands for vertigo (rotatory and nautic) and dysbalance/unstability. Vertigo originates from the vestibular central nervous system; no eye disease, but nystagmus is often present. Dysbalance/unstability: normal ophthalmological findings exclude ophthalmological pathogenesis. Ophthalmological pathology, especially recently developed may be involved. Uncorrected glasses, eye drops (by systemic absorption), flickering light, and migraine may also cause dysbalance/unstability. Rapid referral to specialist is recommended by fast development of: decreased visual acuity, visual field defect

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is one of the three leading causes of legal blindness in childhood in developed countries. Adequate screening is one of the most important steps towards successful treatment. During the last decades, international and national guidelines for ROP screening have been continually updated. These guidelines correspond to progress in neonatal care and to a better understanding of the relationship between different neonatal parameters and the risk of developing ROP. The present article surveys ROP classification, the current national and international guidelines and n

Neuro-ophthalmology covers disorders that fall between the cracks of Neurology and Ophthalmology. Neurologists see patients with neuro-ophthalmic disorders. Recognition of the diagnosis is difficult enough, but treatment can be challenging. This article reviews several common neuro-ophthalmic disorders, outlining their features and treatments, from retinal vascular disorders to eye movements and blepharospasm.

Modern aberrometry measures standard and so-called higher-order refractory aberrations. Ophthalmology and optometry use Zernike polynomials to describe aberrations of the retina and lens causing refractory errors. Aberrations of a higher order sometimes follow successful laser surgery, causing reduced vision and inducing patient dissatisfaction; enhanced wavefront data can help to avoid this. Aberrometry is used also for objective measurement of refractory changes. Wavefront techniques and their clinical application enable many options for understanding the delicate balance of eye optics. The …

BACKGROUND: In this report we provide a description of new findings in retinal angiomatosis (RA) and, in particular, of treatment procedures.
METHOD: A review of relevant publications in the literature has been carried out and remarks on differential diagnosis are provided.
RESULTS: Haemangioblastomas of the retina and the central nervous system are the dominant manifestations in von Hippel-Lindau syndrome (VHL). As in patients with VHL syndrome the danger of new tumours is great, lifelong follow-up examinations are necessary. A genetic counselling with a DNA-based test of index patients and

We describe the ophthalmologic findings in two cases of cerebrofaciothoracic dysplasia, a rare syndrome characterized by facial dysmorphism, multiple malformations of the vertebrae and ribs, and significant mental retardation. Both affected individuals are members of the same family and have epicanthal folds and hypertelorism. In addition, one patient has bilateral bull's eye maculopathy, which may represent an additional severe manifestation of cerebrofaciothoracic dysplasia syndrome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To summarize the known uses of available medical tissue adhesives in the management of diseases of the anterior segment, highlighting recent developments in the field.
RECENT FINDINGS: Human fibrin glues may be used in place of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesives in the treatment of progressive corneal thinning and small perforations, potentially resulting in less corneal and conjunctival inflammatory reaction. Additional currently proposed uses of fibrin glues in ophthalmic surgery include minimizing sutures in recurrent pterygium surgery, forniceal reconstruction, amniotic mem
