The high directionality of hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) has opened radically new ways to route and steer the flow of energy at the nanoscale. However, launching HPhPs requires fabricating efficient and precisely aligned polariton launching structures, what remains time-consuming and expensive with conventional nanofabrication approaches. Recently, using visible laser pulses, polariton launching structures have been programmed into the plasmonic phase-change material In3SbTe2. Here, we leverage this approach to tailor in-plane hyperbolic polaritons by programming launching and confining

Optic disc pallor was recorded in 53 eyes of 53 patients by means of global analysis with a video-ophthalmograph (Rodenstock Disk Analyzer) and computerized boundary analysis. The coefficients of correlation between the values obtained with the Rodenstock Disk Analyzer and those obtained with boundary analysis were r = 0.24 (p = 0.08) at the 0.29 cutoff level, r = 0.39 (p = 0.004) at the 0.39 level and r = 0.46 (p = 0.0005) at the 0.50 level. Although the correlation was significant, the correlation coefficients were not high. The Rodenstock Disk Analyzer uses global analysis, which does not t

We report a patient with left eye positional transient visual obscurations, diplopia, a left afferent pupillary defect, and optic disk edema-all occurring during pregnancy. Noncontrast magnetic resonance imaging revealed an orbital mass encasing the optic nerve and extending through the superior orbital fissure into the cavernous sinus. An magnetic resonance imaging with gadolinium after parturition and strongly positive somatostatin receptor scintigraphy suggested the diagnosis of meningioma. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis, and she was treated with CyberKnife stereotactic radiosurgery. In cas…

PURPOSE: To determine in a population-based study whether parapapillary atrophy is associated with glaucoma.
DESIGN: Population-based cross-sectional study.
METHODS: The Beijing Eye Study included 4,439 of 5,324 subjects invited to participate (response rate, 83.4%). Mean age was 56.2 +/- 10.6 years (range, 40 to 101 years). Color optic disk photographs (30 degrees) were examined morphometrically. Parapapillary atrophy was divided into alpha and beta zones. Glaucomatous optic nerve atrophy was defined by a glaucomatous optic nerve head appearance.
RESULTS: After excluding highly myopic eyes…

Arsanilic acid (1,000 ppm) caused blindness in pigs within 25 to 30 days. The visually evoked response was "nonrecordable" in blind pigs, but was consistently recordable in normal pigs. The electroretinographic response was recordable in both normal and blind pigs, and significant differences were not apparent between results of tests of the 2 groups. Optic disk atrophy was noted ophthalmoscopically; lesions of the optic nerve are probably responsible for the nonrecordable visually evoked response.

BACKGROUND: Prepapillary vascular loops are a type of congenital vascular anomaly seen on or around the optic disk. Patients with this condition are usually asymptomatic and are detected incidentally on routine fundus examinations. Differential diagnosis for this condition includes neovascularization of the disk and collaterals on the disk. Prepapillary capillary loops are not associated with any systemic condition. They are usually unilateral in presentation, but can rarely be bilateral.
PURPOSE: To discuss the new proposed classification of prepapillary capillary loops.
SYNOPSIS: : Prepapi…

A 44-year-old man with hypogonadism and adrenal insufficiency presented with transient blurred vision and halos around lights. Visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes, and he had mild bilateral optic disk edema. Brain imaging was unremarkable, and lumbar puncture showed an opening pressure of 28.5 cm H2O with elevated protein. He also complained of muscle cramping, and magnetic resonance imaging of the spine demonstrated a heterogenous bone marrow signal. Bone survey showed a mixed lytic and sclerotic lesion within the left femur that proved to be a plasmacytoma. Serum protein electrophoresis had…
