OBJECTIVES: Children with generalized hypermobility of the joints and musculoskeletal complaints frequently visit pediatric clinics, but many show no currently known collagen or other possibly related diseases. Whether the symptoms are confined to the musculoskeletal system is unknown. We assessed whether such children have detectable differences in laxity of connective tissue present in organ systems other than joints. We also assessed whether children with generalized joint hypermobility and musculoskeletal complaints have more profound systemic changes in connective tissue of various organ

BACKGROUND: The total-body positron emission tomography (PET) scanner provides an unprecedented opportunity to scan the whole body simultaneously, thanks to its long axial field of view and ultrahigh temporal resolution. To fully utilize this potential in clinical settings, a dynamic scan would be necessary to obtain the desired kinetic information from scan data. However, in a long dynamic acquisition, patient movement can degrade image quality and quantification accuracy.
METHODS: In this work, we demonstrated a motion correction framework and its importance in dynamic total-body FDG PET im

Model observers are widely used in task-based assessments of medical image quality. The presence of multiple abnormalities in a single set of images, such as in multifocal multicentric breast cancer (MFMC), has an immense clinical impact on treatment planning and survival outcomes. Detecting multiple breast tumors is challenging as MFMC is relatively uncommon, and human observers do not know the number or locations of tumors a priori. Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), in which an x-ray beam sweeps over a limited angular range across the breast, has the potential to improve the detection of m

Self-organized catalytic nanomotors consisting of more than one individual component are presented. Tadpole-like catalytic nanomotors fabricated by dynamic shadowing growth (DSG) self-organize randomly to form two-nanomotor clusters (approximately 1-3% yield) that spin as opposed to circular motion exhibited by the individual structures. By introducing magnetic materials to another system, self-assembled "helicopter" nanomotors consisting of a V-shaped nanomotor and a microbead are formed with approximately 25% yield, showing a significantly higher yield than the control (0%). A flexible swimm

Speech disorders become more and more important in clinical area of phoniatrics. It is striking during consultation and treatment of patients that there exist only humble concrete notions concerning speech organs and articulatory movements. Using the computational model introduced here speech organs and speech movements of unrestricted utterances can be displayed in the mediosagittal plane. Articulation is described concisely by using nine basic parameters. The time pattern of these parameter-values defines the articulatory motion plan of an utterance and gives a comprehensive overview of the

Regulating the motion speed of photothermally driven nanorobots remains a significant challenge, as relying solely on a single thermal gradient often fails to provide sufficient driving force differentials for effective speed-switching. Herein, inspired by the thermo-responsive phase-change behavior of organics, we report a thermal switch-activated variable-speed nanorobot based on an aminophenol-formaldehyde concave asymmetric hollow nanobowl. By co-encapsulating ammonium bicarbonate as a chemical fuel and 1-tetradecanol as a phase change material, the designed nanorobot (denoted as AB/AF@TD)

Visual development is a key area for understanding and assessing early brain development. Different levels in the hierarchy of visual processing, from the initial response to flashes of light, through selective responses to contour orientation and motion in primary visual cortex (V1), to global processing in extrastriate of large-scale patterns of form and motion, can each be assessed using stimuli designed to isolate specific neural activity in visual event-related potentials (VERPs). This approach has been used to reveal the sequence of emergence of different visual cortical functions in the

Objective. The small bowel is one of the most radiosensitive organs-at-risk during radiotherapy in the pelvis. This is further complicated due to anatomical and physiological motion. Thus, its accurate tracking becomes of particular importance during therapy delivery, to obtain better dose-toxicity relations and/or to perform safe adaptive treatments. The aim of this work is to simultaneously optimize the MR imaging sequence and motion estimation solution towards improved small bowel tracking precision during radiotherapy delivery.Approach. An MRI sequence was optimized, to adhere to the respi

PURPOSE: The widespread use of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for cervical cancer has been limited by internal target and normal tissue motion. Such motion increases the risk of underdosing the target, especially as planning margins are reduced in an effort to reduce toxicity. This study explored 2 adaptive strategies to mitigate this risk and proposes a new, automated method that minimizes replanning workload.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty patients with cervical cancer participated in a prospective clinical study and underwent pretreatment and weekly magnetic resonance (MR) sca

In this paper I describe the key features of optic flow processing in pigeons. Optic flow is the visual motion that occurs across the entire retina as a result of self-motion and is processed by subcortical visual pathways that project to the cerebellum. These pathways originate in two retinal-recipient nuclei, the nucleus of the basal optic root (nBOR) and the nucleus lentiformis mesencephali, which project to the vestibulocerebellum (VbC) (folia IXcd and X), directly as mossy fibers, and indirectly as climbing fibers from the inferior olive. Optic flow information is integrated with vestibul

BACKGROUND: For delivering high radiation doses to pancreatic tumors, organ motion management is indispensable; however, studies on this are limited. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of dynamic tumor tracking (DTT) moderately hypofractionated intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) in patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer (LAPC).
METHODS: Patients with histological confirmation for LAPC were included. A linac system, which was mounted with a gimbal function, was used for DTT-IMRT. The prescribed dose was 48 Gy in 15 fractions. The primary endpoint was the 1-year rate of…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The accuracy and precision of radiation therapy are dependent on the characterization of organ-at-risk and target motion. This work aims to demonstrate a 4D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method for improving spatial and temporal resolution in respiratory motion imaging for treatment planning in abdominothoracic radiotherapy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The spatial and temporal resolution of phase-resolved respiratory imaging is improved by considering a novel sampling function based on quasi-random projection-encoding and peripheral k-space view-sharing. The respiratory

A serious complication in aortic dissection is dynamic obstruction of the true lumen (TL). Dynamic obstruction results in malperfusion, a blockage of blood flow to a vital organ. Clinical data reveal that increases in central blood pressure promote dynamic obstruction. However, the mechanisms by which high pressures result in TL collapse are underexplored and poorly understood. Here, we developed a computational model to investigate biomechanical and hemodynamical factors involved in Dynamic obstruction. We hypothesize that relatively small pressure gradient between TL and false lumen (FL) are

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory cytokines have been implicated in organ fibrosis; however, their role in the development of arthrofibrosis after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has not been well explored. The purpose of this study is to assess whether perioperative synovial fluid or blood plasma cytokine levels are associated with reduced early post-TKA range of motion.
METHODS: A total of 179 patients with end-stage idiopathic osteoarthritis undergoing TKA were enrolled in this prospective cohort study. Synovial fluid and blood plasma were collected prearthrotomy and plasma was collected longitudinal

BACKGROUND: In cases of hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), the systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve apparatus results in an obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT), which is known as the SAM [systolic anterior motion] phenomenon. Hypothetically, a pathological obstruction of the LVOT of a different etiology would result in a comparable hemodynamic instability, which would be refractory to inotrope therapy, and may be detectable through echocardiography.
CASE PRESENTATION: We observed a severely impaired left ventricular function due to a combination of a

OBJECTIVE: To report the use of augmented reality (AR) in gynecology.
DESIGN: AR is a surgical guidance technology that enables important hidden surface structures to be visualized in endoscopic images. AR has been used for other organs, but never in gynecology and never with a very mobile organ like the uterus. We have developed a new AR approach specifically for uterine surgery and demonstrated its use for myomectomy.
SETTING: Tertiary university hospital.
PATIENT(S): Three patients with one, two, and multiple myomas, respectively.
INTERVENTION(S): AR was used during laparoscopy to local

It is well known that significant variations in stomach size, shape, and respiratory motion lead to uncertainties in target localization during treatment for gastric lymphoma. In this study, the usefulness of 4D-CT for radiation planning of gastric MZBCL/MALT was evaluated. Treatment planning using 4DCT (plan A) and conventional planning with a uniform margin (plan B) were compared using dose volume histograms (DVH) of the planning target volume (PTV) and the organ at risk, as well as the dose coverage of the clinical target volume (CTV) assessed by weekly online cone beam CT (CBCT) during the

BACKGROUND: Cardiac transplantation remains the most effective treatment for patients with end-stage heart failure, but its use is limited by donor organ shortage. Expanding donor acceptance criteria may increase the availability of transplantable hearts. Left ventricular dysfunction due to neurogenic stunned myocardium is common among organ donors and is characterised by rapid functional and structural recovery. The IMPROVED Heart (IMPact of donor heart function on Recipient Outcomes: a prospectiVE observational study to increase the utilisation of Donor Hearts) study aims to increase the num
