Factors associated with the duration of forced eruption of impacted maxillary canines: a retrospective study.

INTRODUCTION: More information is needed to better predict the duration, cost, success rate, and incidence of complications when treating impacted maxillary canines. The aim of this study was to identify factors that affect the number of visits required to complete the canine forced eruption phase. METHODS: Data from diagnostic and treatment notes and radiographs of 87 consecutive adult and adolescent patients were analyzed by stepwise regression analysis. RESULTS: The results indicated a strong direct correlation of the number of visits with the patient's age (P < .0001), the distance betwe

Can forces be applied directly to the root for correction of a palatally displaced central incisor with a dilacerated root?

This case report describes the interdisciplinary treatment of an ectopic horizontally placed maxillary right central incisor with severe root dilaceration. The root was distally angulated and entrapped by the root of the maxillary right lateral incisor. The initial force system was aimed at an occlusal displacement and applied to the crown. During the second phase, a button was cemented onto the apex of the impacted tooth. A force from the apex to a temporary anchorage device in the palate moved the root toward the midline. Finally, a root canal and an apectomy were performed and the central i

Effectiveness of Nd:YAG Laser Fiberotomy in Clinical Crown Lengthening by Forced Eruption.

Crown lengthening by forced eruption is usually followed by conventional surgical procedures. The aim of the present study was to evaluate clinical use of Nd:YAG laser fiberotomy in crown lengthening by forced eruption as an alternative to surgery. Patients who needed crown lengthening were enrolled in this prospective case series and underwent forced eruption. Fiberotomy by Nd:YAG laser was performed 2 days after initiation of forced eruption and every 2 weeks afterward to reach optimum clinical crown length. Measurements included sulcus depth (SD), distance between the gingival margin and th

Orthodontically assisted vertical augmentation in the esthetic zone.

Severe periodontal disease leading to tooth loss causes multiple challenges when treatment planning replacement of these teeth with implant-supported restorations. Provisionalization and transitioning the patient from natural dentition to implant-supported restorations without use of removable prostheses can be difficult to achieve. A detailed evaluation and comprehensive treatment plan should precede extraction of the affected teeth. Forced eruption as a method of modifying the osseous and gingival topography has been established. This clinical report illustrates the use of nonmaintainable te

Management of interdental papillae loss with forced eruption, immediate implantation, and root-form pontic.

BACKGROUND: A 25-year-old Asian woman complained of an unesthetic black triangle between her upper right front teeth. Defective interdental papillae may result from external root resorption, which makes esthetic restoration more difficult. A combined use of forced eruption, immediate implant placement, and a root-form pontic made a successful esthetic and functional restoration. METHODS: The treatment sequences of this patient included short-term forced eruption, subsequent immediate implant placement after tooth extraction, and a provisional root-form pontic restoration. A final prosthesis w

The esthetic management of a severe isolated periodontal defect in the maxillary anterior.

A 30-plus year-old woman presented to the periodontist with a chief complaint concerning the esthetics of the black space between her maxillary right lateral and central incisors (Figure 1). The history of the problem dated back several years when her general dentist noted increased pocket depth in this area. The patient was referred to a periodontist who elected to attempt grafting in this site to improve both the bone and soft tissue. The patient reported that after the initial surgery the defect became significantly worse and a large quantity of gingival tissue was lost. The patient was the

Rate of intrusion of maxillary incisors in Class II Div 1 malocclusion using skeletal anchorage device and Connecticut intrusion arch.

BACKGROUND: Nonsurgical correction of deep bite involves either extrusion of posterior teeth, intrusion of incisors, or combination of both. The introduction of skeletal anchorage device with microimplant provides near absolute anchorage without producing any untoward effects on anchor unit. Connecticut Intrusion Arch (CIA) provided an efficient system of intruding anterior segment without producing much adverse affects on anchor teeth. METHODS: The study comprised of 30 patients of Class II Div 1 malocclusion with overbite of >6 mm and required therapeutic extractions of all first premolars,

Can Condylectomy Alone Achieve Facial Symmetry in Patients With Hemimandibular Hyperplasia (Condylar Hyperplasia Type 2)?

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the 3-dimensional orofacial changes occurring after proportional condylectomy in patients with unilateral condylar hyperplasia type 2 (hemimandibular hyperplasia). Eight patients underwent proportional condylectomy that was not followed by orthognathic surgery or orthodontic treatment for at least 1 year. The precondylectomy and postcondylectomy photographs and radiographs were analyzed cephalometrically and compared. The average length of the condylar segment removed was 13 mm and this resulted in almost equal heights of the ramus-condyle units

Surgical approach and orthodontic treatment of mandibular condylar osteochondroma.

Osteochondroma is a common benign tumor of bones, but it is rare in the mandibular condyle. With its outgrowth it manifests clinically as deviation of the mandible limitation of mouth opening, and facial asymmetry. After the tumor is diagnosed on the basis of clinical symptoms and radiographic examination including cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis, an appropriate surgery and treatment plan should be formulated. Herein, we present the case of a 44-year-old female patient who visited our dental hospital because her chin point had been deviating to the left side slowly but progressiv

Finite Element Analysis of Stress in Maxillary Dentition during En-masse Retraction with Implant Anchorage.

The goal of this study was to investigate how the height of the archwire hook and implant anchor affect tooth movement, stress in the teeth and alveolar bone, and the center of resistance during retraction of the entire maxillary dentition using a multibracket system. Computed tomography was used to scan a dried adult human skull with normal occlusion. Three-dimensional models of the maxillary bone, teeth, brackets, archwire, hook, and implant anchor were created and used for finite element analysis. The heights of the hook and the implant anchor were set at 0, 5, or 10 mm from the archwire. O
