History of surgical approaches in orthopaedics.

Surgical approaches in bone surgery have undergone a long evolution over more than 130 years. While a number of publications have been devoted to the history of internal fixation, surgical approaches have remained neglected from this perspective. The development of approaches in musculoskeletal surgery is inextricably linked to four personalities. Theodor Kocher, in 1892, pointed out that descriptions of surgical approaches must be an essential part of surgical textbooks of operative techniques; James Edwin Thompson, in 1918, formulated the basic requirements for the surgical approaches to the

The metaverse in orthopaedics: Virtual, augmented and mixed reality for advancing surgical training, arthroscopy, arthroplasty and rehabilitation.

PURPOSE: The metaverse and extended reality (XR), which includes augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR), are transforming orthopaedic surgery by enhancing training, procedural accuracy and rehabilitation. However, a literature review of these new virtual tools is lacking. The purpose of this narrative review is to summarise available evidence about the metaverse and discuss current and future clinical applications. METHODS: A narrative review of the current literature was performed for studies evaluating XR tools and their respective clinical and educational utili

Racial Disparities in 30-day Readmission After Orthopaedic Surgery: A 5-year National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Readmission rate after surgery is an important outcome measure in revealing disparities. This study aimed to examine how 30-day readmission rates and causes of readmission differ by race and specific injury areas within orthopaedic surgery. METHODS: The American College of Surgeon-National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was queried for orthopaedic procedures from 2015 to 2019. Patients were stratified by self-reported race. Procedures were stratified using current procedural terminology codes corresponding to given injury areas. Multiple logistic regression was done

High Prevalence of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders and Limited Evidence-based Ergonomics in Orthopaedic Surgery: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Disease Control defines work-related musculoskeletal disorders as disorders of the nerves, muscles, tendons, joints, spinal discs, and cartilage that are caused or exacerbated by the environment or nature of work. Previous meta-analyses have characterized work-related musculoskeletal disorders among interventionists, general surgeons, and other surgical subspecialties, but prevalence estimates, prognosis, and ergonomic considerations vary by study and surgical specialty. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) What is the career prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders

Effects of non-Fourier bioheat transfer on bone drilling temperature in orthopedic surgery: Theoretical and in vitro experimental investigation.

The mechanical drilling process is a typical step in treating bone fractures to fix broken parts with screws and plates. Drilling generates a significant amount of heat and elevates the temperature of the bone, which can cause thermal osteonecrosis and damage to the surrounding bone tissue and nerves. Thermal inertia between heat flux and temperature gradient in nonhomogeneous interior structural medium-like biological tissues is arguable. Therefore, this paper proposes an analytical model of heat propagation in bone drilling for orthopedic surgery based on the hyperbolic Pennes bioheat transf

Louis Ombrédanne, a founding member of SICOT.

This paper describes the life and work of Louis Ombrédanne, one of the founding fathers of the SICOT, a notorious French orthopaedic and paediatric surgeon with a strong interest in plastic surgery and reconstruction of post-traumatic defects and also with limb lengthening and treatment of sequalae. Born in Paris in 1871 as a son of a general practitioner doctor, Ombrédanne was a brilliant student enjoying anatomy and surgery since the early years. He was appointed as a Surgeon in 1902 in Paris and became Professor of Surgery in 1907. During the First World War, he worked in Verdun, one of the

Congenital orthopaedic limp deformities in Corpus Hippocraticum.

During the fifth century BC in ancient Greece during the eve of orthopaedics, the Hippocratic School of Medicine diagnosed a series of congenital limb deformities. Congenital dislocation of the arm, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, tarsotibial joint, apex leg, as well as talipes valgus (clubfoot), congenital clavicle fractures, and thumb malfunction were all discussed by Hippocrates and his followers. Ancient Greek medico-philosophers, fond of a "perfect" human body, proposed an immediate non-interventional approach, while archaic orthotics and specialized footwear were suggested. The Hippocratic meth

HIV and Orthopaedics: Musculoskeletal Manifestations and Outcomes.

➤Advances in combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) in recent years have transformed HIV infection into a chronic disease when treatment is available, increasing a patient's life expectancy and the chances that orthopaedic surgeons will encounter such patients in their clinical practice.➤Musculoskeletal manifestations in patients with HIV infection are common and sometimes are the initial presentation of the disease. Knowledge about neoplasms and associated conditions affecting muscle, bones, and joints is essential for successful management.➤Since the advent of cART, total joint arthroplasty

Utility of spinal anesthesia in plastic surgery and other surgical subspecialties: A literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Spinal anesthesia (SA) is commonly used within the specialties of orthopedic surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, spine surgery, and general surgery, and offers several benefits over general anesthesia (GA). However, SA is used much less frequently in plastic surgery. This review analyzed currently existing data on SA use across various surgical specialties and compared the benefits and complications of SA to those of GA, to assess its utility and potential for more widespread use in plastic surgery. METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using the PubMed and Co

Mandibular Prognathism Correction in a Juvenile Umbrella Cockatoo (Cacatua alba) With the Use of an Orthosis.

A 9-week-old male umbrella cockatoo (Cacatua alba) presented with mandibular prognathism. The rostral rhinothecal tomial length appeared subjectively shorter than the rostral gnathothecal length, which was subjectively rostrally elongated. After an initial orthosis failed, a second orthosis was designed that employed the use of an orthopedic wire anchor in the rostral end of the rhinotheca, leaving the premaxillary bone undisturbed. Prior to placement of the anchor, skull radiographs were taken to measure the distance from the rostral tip of the rhinotheca to the rostral end of the premaxillar

[Historical review of congenital foot deformity treatment].

INTRODUCTION: There is still no good solution for the treatment of all the forms of clubfoot. HISTORY OF THE TREATMENT IN THE WORLD: The first written description of the treatment of this deformity was given by Hippocrates. In the Middle Ages, Galenus, Celsus and Averroe only reviewed the lessons of Hippocrates's principles. The first description of orthopedic prosthetic for the treatment of clubfoot was published in "Opera Chirurgica" by Amboise Peréa in 1575. In 1796, Bruckner wrote the first monography about clubfoot. The biggest contribution to the modern way of treating clubfoot was give

Requirements analysis of a 5 degree of freedom haptic simulator for orthopedic trauma surgery.

There are currently few Virtual Reality simulators for orthopedic trauma surgery. The current simulators provide only a basic recreation of the manual skills involved, focusing instead on the procedural and anatomical knowledge required. One factor limiting simulation of the manual skills is the complexity of adding realistic haptic feedback, particularly torques. This paper investigates the requirements, in terms of forces and workspace (linear and rotational), of a haptic interface to simulate placement of a lag screw in the femoral head, such as for fixation of a fracture in the neck of the

Surgical preferences in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A cross-sectional study in a low-middle income country.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is one of the most common surgical procedures in sports orthopedics; however, there is a lack of literature related to this topic in Peru. This study aimed to describe the current surgical preferences in ACLR among Peruvian orthopedic surgeons. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study based on an online survey sent to 500 Peruvian orthopedic surgeons, supplemented with physical surveys distributed during the "IX OrthoTrauma Update" congress held in October 2022 in Lima, Peru. The survey collected demographic characteristics (e

Music as an Intervention for Pain Relief in Orthopedic Bedside Care.

INTRODUCTION: Orthopedic surgeries are commonly associated with significant postoperative pain and physiological stress, which can be objectively identified through alterations in vital signs, such as blood pressure and heart rate. During postoperative bedside care, procedures that involve patient handling and mobilization may intensify pain-related physiological responses, highlighting the need for interventions capable of modulating both pain perception and vital signs in this clinical context. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of music as an intervention on pain and vital signs during beds

Factors Influencing Compliance to Follow-up Visits in Orthopaedic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Orthopaedic procedures require postoperative follow-up to maximize recovery. Missed appointments and noncompliance can result in complications and increased healthcare costs. This study investigates the relationship between patient postoperative visit attendance and the distance traveled to receive care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of all surgeries performed by a single orthopaedic surgeon in 2019 at level 1 trauma center in a midsized city serving a largely rural population was completed. We excluded patients who underwent another subsequent procedure. Distance

The Lack of Reporting Social Determinants of Health in Pediatric Orthopaedic Randomized Controlled Trials.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOHs) affect health outcomes outside the hospital, and understanding them can enhance postoperative outcomes in orthopaedic surgery patients. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in pediatric orthopaedic journals reporting on the SDOHs of their patient cohorts. We hypothesize that many SDOHs will be underreported in RCTs investigating pediatric orthopaedic surgery. METHODS: Utilizing the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines, the authors queried the PubMed
