The Risk of an H5N1 Influenza Pandemic.

The last 110 years have seen four influenza A pandemics, where viruses have emerged from mammals or birds with the ability to transmit and cause disease in human populations. Since 2021, a high-pathogenicity strain of avian influenza, H5N1, has caused a panzootic (pandemic of animals), with global spread in wild birds, resulting in frequent spillovers into farmed poultry and into mammals, including mammal species not previously known to be affected by influenza A. This has created increased opportunity for reassortment, mutation, human infection, and potential adaptation to transmit. The risk …

Contagion, migration, and misallocation in a pandemic.

We study how individuals' migration decisions during a pandemic interact with the spatial allocation of hospital resources, characterizing both the laissez-faire equilibrium and the planner's allocation in closed form. Susceptible individuals leave high-infection cities while infected individuals move toward better-resourced ones, but these private decisions diverge from the planner's along two dimensions. First, the migration of infected agents toward susceptible-rich destinations raises transmission risk, a contagion externality the planner internalizes by restricting such flows. Second, the

The Politicization of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Political actors and institutions are largely responsible for effectively implementing the latest scientific and medical information in the form of public health measures. However, when politicians' judgments and decision-making are not founded on scientific facts or when scientific findings are misrepresented to further political goals, global crises such as pandemics may be even more galvanized. Like other scientific topics that entered public debate before 2020 (e.g., the debate on climate change), the COVID-19 pandemic has been heavily politicized worldwide. Consequently, COVID-19-related …

Monkeypox: another pandemic in the making?

Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which is a member of the Poxviridae family of viruses. It is transmitted through direct or indirect contact with fluid secretions. Initial symptoms include fever, chills, headache, and malaise, followed by a maculopapular rash that starts on the face and progresses centrifugally. Polymerase chain reaction is the preferred laboratory test for the diagnosis, and management is mostly supportive. The clinical presentation of monkeypox is quite similar to that of another member of the Poxviridae family: smallpox, which wreaked havoc in

Regulating Movement in Pandemic Times.

As COVID-19 and its variants spread across Australia at differing paces and intensity, the country's response to the risk of infection and c … d indeed, into hyper-local spaces. This is not just apparent in the COVID-19 moment but in previous pandemics of 1918 to 1919 influenza and smallpox, in which practices of quarantine and lockdowns were both unevenly distributed and implemented on multiple scales of social organization. An interdisciplinary approach between history and law reveals that human …

Missed Opportunities and the Impact of the Pandemic.

Benjamin is a 9-month-old, former 36-week gestation infant who presented to the high-risk infant follow-up clinic with parental concern for developmental regression. His mother reported that Benjamin seemed to be developing typically, but over the past 2 months, he has lost the ability to visually track objects, is not as engaged with her as he once was, and now only rarely makes babbling sounds. His mother also reported episodes of intermittent "bursts" of stiffening of his extremities and brief staring spells. Benjamin's mother described him as a "good, quiet baby." She commented that he use

Gout and the COVID-19 pandemic.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review gives an overview of recently published articles on COVID-19 and gout. RECENT FINDINGS: People with gout are likely to be at an increased risk of poor outcomes after COVID-19 infection due to comorbid cardiometabolic conditions. The effects of chronic hyperuricemia on trained immunity, and the hyperinflammatory state induced by gout itself may also play a role. Frequent courses of glucocorticoids for gout flares may be associated with adverse outcomes after COVID-19 infection and reduced immunogenicity to the COVID-19 vaccination. Similarities between the pathop

The global failure of facing the pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in late 2019 has had social, political, and economic consequences worldwide. However, its emergence was not a surprise. In 2015, a Panel organised by the World Health Organization highlighted the importance of learning about the crisis caused by the Ebola epidemic. In 1992, the Committee on Emerging Microbial Threats to Health of the US Institute of Medicine warned of the possibility of an emerging global microbial threat. In this text, we point out five arguments that reveal the global failure in facing the pandemic: (1) deficiency in the global alert system and

Tinnitus in COVID-19 Pandemic.

Tinnitus is a symptom that can significantly affect the quality of life of every patient. In patients with tinnitus, one of the most important diagnostic element is medical history data. Patients classify the pitch and loudness of tinnitus graphically using the visual analog scale (VAS). Visual analog scale and similar questionnaires constitute a valuable addendum of the clinical picture in patients with tinnitus. It seems essential, especially in the light of the information presented in the case report on the probability of correlation between tinnitus and stress and depression associated wi

Scarcity in the Covid-19 Pandemic.

As we write, U.S. cities and states with extensive community transmission of Covid-19 are in harm's way-not only because of the disease itself but also because of prior and current failures to act. During the 2009 influenza pandemic, public health agencies and hospitals developed but never adequately implemented preparedness plans. Focused on efficiency in a competitive market, health systems had few incentives to maintain stockpiles of essential medical equipment. Just-in-time economic models resulted in storage of only those supplies needed then. At the same time, global purchasing in search

The role of transplant during a pandemic.

This month’s installment of “The AJT Report” explores the role of the transplant community in the wider healthcare framework as both entities navigate the challenges of COVID-19. We also report on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ recently proposed updates to the Organ Procurement Organization Conditions for Coverage.

The pandemic in prison: interventions and overisolation.

Prisional health is, in its essence, public health. The COVID-19 pandemic poses a great threat to the world and has shown that preventing the disease escalation in prisons integrates the novel corona virus clash in society in general. Up to this moment, the most effective known measure to curb the disease spread is social isolation. Nevertheless, in penal institutions, often overcrowded, social isolation becomes difficult to carry out and, when it happens, it takes the enclosed population to overisolation, with consequences to their mental health. Besides, prisoners suffer with clogged up envi
