BACKGROUND: Mainly affecting poorer populations in remote (sub)tropical areas, paragonimiasis is considered one of the world's most neglected tropical diseases by the World Health Organization. It is usually acquired by consuming undercooked freshwater crustaceans and primarily affects the lungs, but may ectopically migrate to other organs to produce a multisystemic clinical presentation. This study details what appears to be the first documented case in South America and particularly in Colombia of cerebral paragonimiasis and infection by the crab Moreirocarcinus emarginatus.

Paragonimiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Paragnonimus species. The primary site of infection is the lung, and extrapulmonary involvement is also reported. Clinical data of 22 cases with paragonimiasis in brain and spinal cord in the Central Hospital of Enshi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture during 2003 -2012 were retrospectively analyzed. Twenty-two cases aged from 6 to 17 years old, including 15 males and 7 females, were from the countryside, and had a history of eating raw crabs. BACKGROUND: Paragonimiasis is a food-borne trematodiasis, a serious public health issue and a neglected tropical disease. Paragonimus skrjabini is a unique species found in China. Unlike paragonimiasis westermani, it is nearly impossible to make a definitive diagnosis for paragonimiasis skrjabini by finding eggs in sputum or feces. Immunodiagnosis is the best choice to detect paragonimiasis skrjabini. There is an urgent need to develop a novel, rapid and simple immunoassay for large-scale screening patients in endemic areas.

Paragonimiasis is a parasitic infection caused by the genus Paragonimus and usually leads to pulmonary disease. Hepatic paragonimiasis is rare, but duodenal and splenic involvement of this disease has not yet been reported in the literature. Herein, we report two rare cases of hepatic paragonimiasis with simultaneous duodenal or splenic involvement, respectively, and described their CT features. Both patients were lifelong residents of an endemic area of paragonimiasis and were confirmed clinicopathologically.

Praziquantel was used successfully for treatment of a small number of dogs and 1 cat infected with Paragonimus kellicotti. To further evaluate the usefulness of this drug in treating such infections, 7 cats and 7 dogs were inoculated orally with metacercariae (12 and 20 to 22, respectively) obtained from crayfish, then were treated after the infections became patent; 2 cats and 2 dogs served as noninfected controls. Adult Paragonimus heterotremus were recovered from the lungs and pleural cavity of cats orally infected with metacercariae. The worms were ground and extracted with distilled water. Hemoptysis in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) may occur in up to 17% of cases. The vast majority of the cases are secondary to bacterial, tuberculosis or opportunistic infections. Also uremia, pulmonary embolism and lung hemorrhage must be considered. The majority of the above referred entities are usually alarming events in any patient with SLE. In contrast, we describe a patient with inactive SLE, who developed hemoptysis secondary to Paragonimus sp., which was treated "easily" with praziquantel. Fluke infection must be considered in the differential diagnosis of hemoptysis in SLE.

The latex agglutination test (LAT) was compared with the complement fixation test (CFT), double diffusion test (DDT) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the serodiagnosis of South American paragonimiasis.
