BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the hormones produced in pituitary gland tumours (TM) following fractionated external irradiation in rats. The TM arose in the course of studies on other questions of radiation effects.
METHODS: The left neck and skull base of sixty female Wistar rats, 3 to 4 months of age at the beginning of the external irradiation, were subjected to roentgen rays exposure, fractionated to 2 Grays daily, either up to 20, 40 or 60 Gy. The midline of the neck and skull was always inside the radiation field. The animals were sacrificed either 6 months or 12 mo

BACKGROUND: When an asymptomatic adrenal mass is incidentally discovered on abdominal CT scans, the distinction between a nonhyperfunctioning adenoma and a nonadenoma would be important.
METHODS: We evaluated the CT findings of 36 adrenal masses (14 nonhyperfunctioning adenomas, 22 nonadenomas) in 34 patients with no evidence of hormonal hypersecretion. CT attenuation values of adrenal masses on CT scans were calculated by setting a circular region of interest as large as possible in the center of each adrenal mass.
RESULTS: Below 20 HU in CT attenuation values, all adrenal masses, except on

BACKGROUND: In nondiabetic women, pregnancy alone rarely causes clinical hypoglycemia. Non-islet cell tumors have recently been shown to be associated with the production of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) and a paraneoplastic syndrome resulting in hypoglycemia. A case report and review of pathophysiologic mechanisms involved is presented.
CASE: A 38-year-old multigravida presented suffering from clinical and biochemical hypoglycemia, which was found to be secondary to a mesothelioma of the pleura and ectopic IGF-II production. Tumor resection was performed during the 13th gestational

Primary aldosteronism-characterized by hypertension, hypokalemia and metabolic alkalosis--is caused by benign adenomata or bilateral adrenal hyperplasia in most cases. Aldosterone producing carcinomata of the adrenal cortex are very rare tumors. As the histological classification is difficult, the diagnosis is often drawn from tumor size, very high levels of plasma aldosterone, severe hypokalemia and malignant behaviour. The prognosis is very poor: Overall median and 5 year survival rate from diagnosis of adrenocortical carcinoma are 14 months and 24%.

A 42-yr-old man with congestive heart failure and diabetes mellitus was found to have acromegaly and a pheochromocytoma. Serum GH-releasing hormone (GHRH) levels were elevated (2.34 ng/dl; normal, less than 0.02 ng/dl), suggesting that the acromegaly was caused by ectopic secretion of GHRH. Postmortem examination revealed that the right adrenal gland contained a pheochromocytoma in which GHRH was demonstrated by immunohistochemical studies. Gel permeation chromatography combined with the use of two GHRH antisera showed that GHRH-(1-44)-NH2 was a predominant form of the hormone. When the RNA fr

Immunohistochemical and histological investigations were undertaken on 24 surgically-removed pituitary adenomas. By histology (haemalu-eosin staining), 7 chromophobe, 12 acidophil and 5 basophil pituitary adenomas were revealed. For immunohistochemical purposes the peroxidase-antiperoxidase technique was applied. Primary antisera against 10 hormones were used. By immunohistochemistry, 7 prolactin-containing, 2 TSH-containing, 2 GH-containing and 1 beta-endorphin-containing pituitary adenomas were identified. Furthermore, 1 mixed thyrotropic-prolactin human pituitary adenoma was detected. A pos

Seven malignant peripheral lung tumors that were diagnosed using light microscopy as large-cell carcinomas or as epidermoid or adenocarcinomas were studied by light and electron microscopic histochemistry. All tumors contained numerous dense-core granules. The cells were joined by desmosomes and contained well-developed tonofilament bundles. Serotonin was demonstrated in six of seven tumors and argyrophilic granules were demonstrated in five of six tumors tested. Four tumors produced mucus. All tumors extended to the visceral pleura and two invaded the chest wall. The existence of lung tumors

Report of a 28-year-old female patient with a metastasizing soft tissue sarcoma confined to the oral mucosa and subcutis. The basic disease attracted clinical attention as a nodular febrile nonsuppurative panniculitis (Pfeifer-Weber-Christian disease). Perivascular tumor cells in the subcutis obviously induced localized fat necroses. Ultrastructurally, the pathological cells showed no indicative cytological characteristics other than a close association with reticulin fibers. Apparently, a metastasizing tumor disease can be concealed under the clinical picture of a nodular febrile non suppurat

Ectopic production of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) usually results in hypokalemic myopathy but is occasionally associated with florid Cushing's syndrome. We present a patient with Cushing's syndrome associated with a small-cell undifferentiated lung carcinoma. We describe the skin changes observed in this patient and review the cutaneous manifestation of Cushing's syndrome, and present current knowledge of the effects of glucocorticoids on the skin.

A paraneoplastic syndrome (PNS) is a set of symptoms and signs that can accompany the formation of a cancer but is not due to its direct infiltration or metastasis. PNS results from the secretion of peptides or hormones by tumor cells or from an immunological cross-reaction between the tumor antigens and host antigens. In the adult population, PNS affects up to 15% of patients with cancer, but data on pediatric patients remain lacking. The remarkable fact is that PNS can precede an oncology diagnosis, even by months or years. PNS can involve virtually any organ of the human body. In children,

Adrenomedullin (AM) is a recently discovered potent vasodilatory peptide, originally isolated in extracts of human pheochromocytoma, with activities including maintenance of cardiovascular and renal homeostasis through vasodilatation, diuresis and natriuresis. Human AM consists of 52 amino acids with a 6-member ring structure linked by a disulfide bond and amidated COOH terminal, which belongs to calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and amylin. The main sites of AM production are the lungs, vascular tissues (both endothelial and smooth muscle cells), heart, kidney, adrenal glands, pancreatic

ACTH responses to corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) were studied in three patients with the ectopic ACTH syndrome caused by lung cancer. Plasma ACTH responded to synthetic CRH in two of three patients. Tumor tissues obtained from these two patients contained CRH and ACTH. In one patient, tumor ACTH secretion was stimulated by CRH in vitro. Tumor CRH was immunologically, chromatographically, and biologically similar to hypothalamic CRH. In addition, multiple forms of immunoreactive beta-endorphin were present in plasma and the tumor extracts. From these results, we conclude that some patien

Review of clinical data from 350 patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) revealed hyponatremia (sodium less than 130 mEq/L) attributable to the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) in 40 patients (11%). Although hyponatremia was severe in most instances (median, sodium 117 mEq/L), symptoms attributable to water intoxication were identified in only 27% of hyponatremic episodes. Development of SIADH showed no correlation with clinical stage, distribution of metastatic sites, sex, or histologic subtype of small-cell carcinoma. SIADH occurred most often with init
