Decreasing intestinal parasites in recent Northern California refugees.

Beginning in 2005, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expanded the overseas presumptive treatment of intestinal parasites with albendazole to include refugees from the Middle East. We surveyed the prevalence of helminths and protozoa in recent Middle Eastern refugees (2008-2010) in comparison with refugees from other geographical regions and from a previous survey (2001-2004) in Santa Clara County, California. Based on stool microscopy, helminth infections decreased, particularly in Middle Eastern refugees (0.1% versus 2.3% 2001-2004, P = 0.01). Among all refugees, Giardia in

Controlling and coordinating development in vector-transmitted parasites.

Vector-borne parasites cause major human diseases of the developing world, including malaria, human African trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, filariasis, and schistosomiasis. Although the life cycles of these parasites were defined over 100 years ago, the strategies they use to optimize their successful transmission are only now being understood in molecular terms. Parasites are now known to monitor their environment in both their host and vector and in response to other parasites. This allows them to adapt their developmental cycles and to counteract any unfavorable conditions t

[Transepidermal elimination of parasites in Jorge Lobo's disease].

BACKGROUND: Few studies have focussed on the transepidermal elimination of parasites in Jorge Lobo's disease (lobomycosis). OBJECTIVE: To identify the morphological features of the transepidermal elimination of parasites in lobomycosis. METHODS: Sections were obtained from paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens of patients with lobomycosis and stained with hematoxylin-eosin for microscopic examination. Only the presence of parasites in epidermal structures was considered to constitute transepidermal elimination. RESULTS: Forty biopsies from 37 patients were included in the study (31 males and 6

Intestinal parasites of dogs on the Galapagos Islands.

Dogs on the Galapagos Islands are a unique population created by isolation from the mainland and regulations prohibiting further importation. The effect of infectious agents of these domestic dogs on the indigenous fauna is largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites in dogs on the Galapagos Islands. Fecal samples were collected from 97 dogs presented during neutering campaigns on Santa Cruz (n=51), San Cristobal (n=17), and Isabela (n=29) islands. Feces were evaluated for parasites by microscopic examination after zinc sulfate centrifugat

Serum leptin concentrations in patients with intestinal parasites.

Leptin is a protein hormone controlling food intake and energy expenditure. In all infections including parasitic infections there is loss of appetite and anorexia. The aim of the present study was to clarify the relationship between intestinal parasites and serum leptin concentrations in children and adults. Forty patients with intestinal parasites and 34 healthy subjects took part in this study. Body weight, height and body mass index (BMI) were measured for all patients and controls. Patients were grouped according to age and parasitic infections (Giardia intestinalis, Blastocystis hominis,

Is there a cost of parasites to caribou?

Macroparasites potentially play a significant but often ignored role in the ecology and dynamics of wild ruminant populations. In the Arctic, parasites may impact on host populations by exacerbating the effects of seasonal and limited forage availability on the condition, fecundity and survival of individuals. We studied the effects of abomasal nematode parasites and warble flies, Hypoderma tarandi, on condition and pregnancy of caribou Rangifer tarandus in the Dolphin-Union herd, Nunavut, Canada. By the end of winter, female caribou over 2 years old showed a significant decrease in body weigh

Babesial vector tick defensin against Babesia sp. parasites.

Antimicrobial peptides are major components of host innate immunity, a well-conserved, evolutionarily ancient defensive mechanism. Infectious disease-bearing vector ticks are thought to possess specific defense molecules against the transmitted pathogens that have been acquired during their evolution. We found in the tick Haemaphysalis longicornis a novel parasiticidal peptide named longicin that may have evolved from a common ancestral peptide resembling spider and scorpion toxins. H. longicornis is the primary vector for Babesia sp. parasites in Japan. Longicin also displayed bactericidal an

Parasites and the evolutionary diversification of primate clades.

Coevolutionary interactions such as those between hosts and parasites have been regarded as an underlying cause of evolutionary diversification, but evidence from natural populations is limited. Among primates and other mammalian groups, measures of host diversification rates vary widely among lineages, but comparative studies have not yet identified a reliable explanation for this variation. In this study, we used a comprehensive data set of disease-causing organisms from free-living primates to illustrate how phylogenetic comparative methods can be used to examine mammalian lineage diversity

Growth-inhibitory effect of heparin on Babesia parasites.

We examined the inhibitory effects of three heparins on the growth of Babesia parasites. The multiplication of Babesia bovis, B. bigemina, B. equi, and B. caballi in in vitro cultures and that of B. microti in vivo were significantly inhibited in the presence of heparins, as determined by light microscopy. Treatment with various concentrations of heparin showed complete clearance of the intracellular parasites. Interestingly, a higher percentage of abnormally multidividing B. bovis parasites was observed in the presence of low concentrations of heparin. Furthermore, fluorescein isothiocyanate-

Molecular epidemiology and evolutionary genetics of Leischmania parasites.

In order to illustrate the relevance of the concepts and methods of evolutionary genetics in the understanding of the epidemiology of pathogenic agents, we develop in this paper the case of the Leishmania, a genus of parasitic protozoa. An extensive study of various natural populations of Leishmania in different countries (Old and New World) was carried out by using Multilocus Enzyme Electrophoresis (MLEE) and Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA fingerprinting (RAPD) as genetic markers. The data have been interpreted in evolutionary genetic terms. The main benefit of this approach has been to bet

Resistance of filarial nematode parasites to oxidative stress.

All filariae examined to date express a comprehensive repertoire of both cytoplasmic and secreted anti-oxidant enzymes, although significant differences exist between species and life-cycle stages. Adult Brugia malayi, Dirofilaria immitis and Onchocerca volvulus secrete CuZn superoxide dismutases, and the former two species also secrete a selenocysteine-independent glutathione peroxidase. This enzyme has been localised to the cuticular matrix of B. malayi, and the preferential reduction of fatty acid- and phospholipid hydroperoxides suggests that it may protect cuticular membranes from oxidati

[Recent features of parasites detected from clinical specimens].

It is generally considered that we have already been through with problems caused by various kinds of parasites which had once raged throughout the country. On the contrary to our common concept, we occasionally encounter some kinds of parasites in a laboratory as well as in clinical fields, which have become unfamiliar to us in these days. Parasitic diseases are in the first place, proper and limited to certain local regions, but the present situation has been greatly changed. Nowadays, specific parasites are no longer limited to polluted areas, but also they can be detected in any part of th

[Prevalence of intestinal parasites among Thais in Israel].

Stool samples from 93 Thais working in Israel were examined for the presence of parasites. The overall prevalence of infection by 1 or more species was 74%. Opisthorchis viverrini and hookworm were the most prevalent parasites (51.6% and 44.1%, respectively). They were also the parasites most frequently found in mixed infections; about a quarter of the workers were infected with both. Other helminths found in only a few cases were: Fasciolopsis buski (3 cases), Taenia sp. (3), Paragonimus sp. (1), Ascaris lumbricoides (1), Trichuris trichiura (1) and Trichostrongylus sp. (1).

New parasites on the block: emerging intestinal protozoa.

Several trends in clinical medicine have converged recently and placed intestinal protozoan infections in a position of increasing importance to health professionals. These trends include the pandemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections that cause the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and result in associated opportunistic infections. The increasing use of powerful chemotherapeutic and immunosuppressive agents to prevent rejection of transplanted tissues in human allograft recipients has predisposed these patients to intestinal parasitic infections, which often become chro

Arthritis due to tuberculosis, fungal infections, and parasites.

Tuberculous, fungal, and parasitic infections infect millions of people throughout the world. While other problems usually overshadow their rheumatologic manifestations, nearly all these infections can involve bone or joints and may on occasion present with rheumatologic symptoms. The classic model of these diseases presenting as chronic monoarticular arthritis is still generally valid but other presentations, such as tenosynovitis with atypical mycobacterial infections, erythema nodosum with leprosy, coccidioidomycosis and histoplasmosis, and reactive arthritis with schistosomiasis and helmin
