Lewy bodies were observed incidentally in the neurons of the dorsal group of nucleus intermediolateralis of the 3rd sacral segment of the spinal cord in a 74-year-old male with Parkinson's disease. The findings indicate the degeneration of the preganglionic parasympathetic neurons innervating the internal anal sphincter. The correlation between the findings and the mechanism of constipation in this disease are discussed.

Subcutaneous administration of 0.05 mug estradiol benzoate to sexually immature female rats caused precocious ovulation and a decreased acetylcholine content in the hypothalamus and the amygdala. A higher dose of estradiol benzoate, 2 mug/rat, did not stimulate ovulation but did cause a further decrease in the acetylcholine content in the hypothalamus and the amygdala. The steady state levels of acetylcholine in the hippocampus and the striatum were unchanged with either dose of estradiol. These observations suggest a relationship between the occurrence of ovulation and the decrease in the ste

The high- and low-pressure baroreceptor reflexes are integral to the control of blood pressure by the autonomic nervous system. Tests of the integrity of these baroreflexes make it possible to identify the site of autonomic dysfunction in patients with orthostatic hypotension. Clinical characteristics and typical results of autonomic testing in patients with autonomic failure, with carotid sinus hypersensitivity, and with hyperadrenergic autonomic dysfunction are described in this review.

Aging is the greatest independent risk factor for developing hypertension and cardiovascular-related diseases including systolic hypertension, vascular disease, ischemic events, arrhythmias, and heart failure. Age-related cardiovascular risk is associated with dysfunction of peripheral organ systems, such as the heart and vasculature, as well as an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system characterized by increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic neurotransmission. Given the increasing prevalence of aged individuals worldwide, it is critical to better understand mechanisms contribut

To investigate the changes in salivary secretion associated with emesis, salivary secretion from the submaxillary gland and centrifugal discharge from the parasympathetic postganglionic nerve fibers from the submandibular ganglion were measured after emetic stimulation in chloralose-anesthetized and paralyzed dogs. In the basal condition, saliva flow and the basal frequencies of single unit discharges from the parasympathetic nerve were very low. Esophageal and gastric distension and lingual nerve afferent stimulation generally increased salivary secretion and nerve activity. Administration of

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), injected into the central nervous system (CNS) in rats, has been shown to elicit systemic hyperglycemia. In the present study, central TRH administration significantly decreased the plasma glucose in mice. The hypoglycemic response could be blocked by pretreatment with the muscarinic cholinergic antagonist, atropine methyl bromide, or the diabetogenic beta-cytotoxin, alloxan, implicating the involvement of the parasympathetic system and insulin-secreting cells in the endocrine pancreas. The role of TRH in the CNS in the autonomic regulation of glucose homeo

Evidence linking psychological stress to allergy has grown with our increased understanding of the natural history and pathophysiology of th … g in utero, stress may influence the programming of brain neurotransmitter systems, sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system functioning, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, which in turn may alter neural regulation of immune function. Epigenetic dysregulation of gene expression may be a fundamental mechanism for programming of early neural-immune processes.

Regulation of energy homeostasis is tightly controlled by the central nervous system (CNS). Several key areas such as the hypothalamus and b … and WAT), liver, pancreas, and skeletal muscle. The ANS consists of two parts, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems (SNS and PSNS). The SNS regulates BAT thermogenesis and EE, controlled by central areas such as the preoptic area (POA) and the ventromedial, dorsomedial, and arcuate hypothalamic nuclei (VMH, DMH, and ARC). The SNS also regulates lipid metabolism …

BACKGROUND: Some reports suggest that activation of the autonomic nervous system by bupivacaine could participate in its cardiotoxicity. This is based in part on the fact that hexamethonium suppresses cardiac disturbances in anesthetized rabbits given small intracerebroventricular doses of bupivacaine. The aims of the current study were to determine, in anesthetized dogs, (1) whether the activation of the autonomic nervous system is deleterious after a large intravenous dose of bupivacaine and (2) whether the parasympathetic or sympathetic system is implicated in the bupivacaine-induced delete

Circumstantial evidence supports the hypothesis that the vagal nervous system is dysregulated in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This dysregulation can lead to an increased sensitivity of the cough reflex such that the coughing becomes, at times, "nonproductive" or inappropriate. Vagal dysregulation can also lead to an increase in the activity of the parasympathetic reflex control of the airways, which contributes to greater mucus secretion and bronchial smooth muscle contraction. Indirect evidence indicates that lung disease is accompanied by substantive changes to the entire reflex pa

During high pressure in the bladder, particularly during delay of urination because of infravesical obstruction, raisings of blood pressure were marked with simultaneous increase of renal and spleen sympathetic nerves activity. During urination the activity of sympathetic nervous system decreases while the activity of parasympathetic system which is responsible for detrusor contraction increase. All these data testify to changes of vegetative regulation of hypertrophic bladder during inftavesical obstruction, but on the other hand mechanism of those changes and their functional consequences re

Hepatic lipid metabolism is regulated by the autonomic nervous system of the liver, with the sympathetic innervation being extensively studied, while the parasympathetic efferent innervation is less understood despite its potential importance. In this study, we investigate the consequences of disrupted brain-liver communication on hepatic lipid metabolism in mice exposed to obesogenic conditions. We found that a subset of hepatocytes and cholangiocytes are innervated by parasympathetic nerve terminals originating from the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus. The elimination of the brain-liver ax

A possible role of the autonomic nervous system in the left ventricular response to acute regional myocardial ischemia was sought in conscious dogs instrumented for measurement of left ventricular pressure, internal diameter, and aortic flow. Ischemia produced by occluding the left circumflex coronary artery caused tachycardia and reduced contractility. Changes during control occlusions were compared with those during occlusion.s after beta-adrenergic blockade, parasympathetic blockade, and combined sympathetic and parasymphatetic blockade. Beta-blockade did reduce the tachycardia and slightly

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) involvement in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is well recognised and contributes to arrhythmia and sudden death. However, there is no study documented the therapeutic efficacy on autonomic neuropathy (AN) in RA. This is the first reported observation of improvement in AN with interleukin-6 (IL-6) blockade with tocilizumab in RA. We report a case of 61-year old female with seropositive RA with severe disease activity, investigated for autonomic neuropathy. A battery of non invasive tests was used for accurate assessment of AN function based on assessment of peripheral

The peripheral nervous system is classically separated into a somatic division containing both afferent and efferent pathways and an autonomic division composed of efferents only. The somatic afferent division is divided in A- and B-neurons. The B-neurons are supposed to be autonomic afferents as part of a reflex system involved in homeostasis. Recent data obtained by neuronal tracing and immunohistochemical experiments concerning the eye related peripheral nervous system endorse the existence of these peripheral reflex systems. Somatic afferents of trigeminal origin synaptically innervate par
