Parent Perspectives on Parent-Mediated Intervention for Young Children With Down Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Parent-mediated intervention (PMI) is a potentially scalable approach for tailored interventions in neurogenetic conditions like Down syndrome (DS). Because PMIs require ongoing parent engagement, they must be developed in alignment with the needs of intended users. The present study examined caregiver opinions and preferences to inform the development of syndrome-informed interventions for children with DS. METHOD: Parents of children with DS (n = 34) participated in focus groups discussing PMI. Interviews were transcribed and a thematic analysis was applied to code the data. RE

Parent-child communication about weight: Priorities for parental education and support.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 2/3 of parents talk about body weight with their children, which can include negative comments that have adverse health implications for youth. OBJECTIVES: To identify ways to improve supportive parent-child communication about weight, we assessed parent and youth perspectives of barriers to weight communication, preferences for educational resources and support, and whether perspectives differ across demographic groups and weight status. METHODS: In Fall 2021, online surveys were completed by two independent, unrelated samples of parents (N = 1936) and youth (N = 2

[Parental support, parental self-efficacy and borderline personality features in adolescents].

BACKGROUND: Parenting an adolescent with borderline personality disorder (BPD) features can be challenging due to, for example, emotional dysregulation, impulsivity and/or self-destructive behavior. Parents confronted with challenging behavior of their child, may experience less parental-self-efficacy (PSE). Subsequently this lower PSE might strengthen the relationship between low parental support and BPD features. AIM: To increase our understanding of the association between parenting related factors and features of BPD in adolescents. METHOD: The sample consisted of 81 adolescents, in the …

Parental Perceptions of Children's Exposure to Tobacco Smoke and Parental Smoking Behaviour.

Around 40% of children are exposed to tobacco smoke, increasing their risk of poor health. Previous research has demonstrated misunderstanding among smoking parents regarding children's exposure. The parental perceptions of exposure (PPE) measure uses visual and textual vignettes to assess awareness of exposure to smoke. The study aimed to determine whether PPE is related to biochemical and reported measures of exposure in children with smoking parents. Families with at least one smoking parent and a child ≤ age 8 were recruited. In total, 82 parents completed the PPE questionnaire, which was

Parental reactions to children's negative affect: The moderating role of parental GAD.

The impact of parental anxiety disorders has been explored in broad categories of parenting behaviors; however, less is known about the impact of parental anxiety on emotion socialization behaviors. The current study tested the conditional effect of parental Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) on one aspect of emotion socialization, parents' reactions to their child's negative affect. Participants were 89 children between ages 3 and 12 and their parents, from a community sample. Parents completed the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule-IV (ADIS-IV), an interaction task with their child, and th…

Parents make the difference: a randomized-controlled trial of a parenting intervention in Liberia.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of a brief parenting intervention, 'Parents Make the Difference'(PMD), on parenting behaviors, quality of parent-child interactions, children's cognitive, emotional, and behavioral wellbeing, and malaria prevention behaviors in rural, post-conflict Liberia. METHODS: A sample of 270 caregivers of children ages 3-7 were randomized into an immediate treatment group that received a 10-session parent training intervention or a wait-list control condition (1:1 allocation). Interviewers administered baseline and 1-month post-interven…

Parental warmth amplifies the negative effect of parental hostility on dating violence.

Past research has documented the positive association between parental hostility and offspring involvement in intimate partner violence. Res … aggressive behaviors in their own romantic relationships. The same is true for the effects of harsh parenting for women. It seems that the best way parents can avoid contributing to their child's chances of being in a violent dating relationship is to eschew family interaction involving verbal and physical aggression.

The 2-year stability of parental perceptions of child vulnerability and parental overprotection.

Clinicians often identify parent-child relationships that are believed to be problematic for the child's future emotional growth, yet there are minimal outcome data on which to base anticipatory guidance. This 2-year follow-up study examined the stability and child behavioral correlates of parental perceptions of increased child vulnerability and parental overprotection. Of 192 potential participants, 114 parents (93% mothers, 86% white, 75% married, 90% middle-upper socioeconomic status) with children age 4 to 7 years successfully completed the Parent Protection Scale, Child Vulnerability Sca

Perceived parental rearing style, parental divorce and transsexualism: a controlled study.

The parental representations of male-to-female and female-to-male transsexuals were rated using the EMBU inventory. Scores on the measure were compared against ratings returned by controls of similar biological sex, matched on age, educational level and number of female siblings in an ANCOVA design. In line with previous findings by Parker & Barr (1982), who studied male-to-female transsexuals only, these patients were found not to differ from the male controls in their scoring of their mothers, but did score their fathers as less emotionally warm, more rejecting and more protective. Extending

Association of Daily Activities With Maternal-Child Bonding, Parenting Self-Efficacy, Social Support, and Parenting Behaviors Among Survivors Living in an Intimate Partner Violence Shelter: A Daily Diary Study.

Following a traumatic event such as intimate partner violence (IPV), survivors often experience stress related to the violence. These high levels of stress related to IPV can be associated with the daily activities of survivors and their relationships with their children, such as maternal-child bonding. The purpose of the current study is to explore the relationship between daily activities, daily stress levels, parenting self-efficacy and behaviors, and maternal-child bonding among survivors living in an IPV shelter using an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) methodology. Twenty-five mothe…

Exploring parental mind-mindedness in the context of atypical and at-risk development: A scoping review of parental well-being, parenting, and child characteristics.

Parental mind-mindedness (MM), the tendency of parents to interpret and comment on their child's internal mental states, is a critical factor in caregiving and child development, particularly in vulnerable or atypical developmental populations. This scoping review synthesizes research on MM in parents of atypically developing children, examining group differences compared to typically developing populations, links between parental MM and well-being, and connections between MM and broader parenting skills. The database search identified twelve studies published between 2012 and 2026. Findings a…

A network analysis of early life trauma, parent-adolescent communication, parental warmth, and parental monitoring among adolescents with behavioral addictions.

BACKGROUND: Whereas some adolescents with early life trauma develop behavioral addictions, others manage to avoid such outcomes by leveragin … search measures. Second, by using network analysis we detected two sub-networks: (i) abuse and (ii) parenting-related. The findings highlighted that emotional abuse and parental warmth had been significant factors influencing the structure and dynamics of the network among adolescents with behavioral addictions. Child-to-Parent Violence: An Exploratory Study of the Roles of Family Violence and Parental Discipline Through the Stories Told by Spanish Children and Their Parents.

The aim of this study was to identify the role of exposure to family violence and parental discipline in the development of child-to-parent violence (CPV). A qualitative in-depth interview design was used. Fifteen adolescents (10 boys) who have perpetrated CPV (Mage=16 years; SDage=1.33 years) and their parents or foster parents took part in the study. Individually, they answered questions about exposure to violence and parenting practices. Results suggest that adolescents were frequently direct victims and also witnesses of violence. Furthermore, emotional neglect in the parent-child relation…

Parental knowledge of child sexual abuse, parent-child communication, and protective parenting behaviors: A cross-sectional multisite study in Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse is a major child protection concern. Parents play an important preventive role through awareness, communication with children, and protective parenting practices. Evidence from Egypt is limited. OBJECTIVE: This study examined associations among parental knowledge of child sexual abuse, parent-child communication, and protective parenting behaviors among Egyptian parents of school-aged children, and explored whether parent-child communication statistically mediated the association between knowledge and protective behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional multisite d…

Exploring the role of parental guilt in the association between parental self-efficacy and adjustment disorder among parents of children diagnosed with cancer.

The diagnosis of childhood cancer poses a profound psychological crisis for parents, compelling them to reevaluate and adapt their parental roles under extreme uncertainty. Guided by transactional stress theory, this study explored parental guilt as a mediator between parental self-efficacy and adjustment disorder among parents of children with cancer. A sample of 218 Israeli parents of children with cancer completed self-report questionnaires. Parental guilt was found to fully mediate the association between parental self-efficacy and adjustment disorder, such that higher levels of parental s

Perceived Parent Needs for Improving Parent Participation in School-Based Therapies for Children with Disabilities Using the Parent-Therapist Partnership Survey.

Rehabilitative and habilitative therapies can help children with disabilities increase independence and overall wellbeing. However, children and their caregivers face many barriers to accessing these therapies and often rely on the school for therapy access. Given the limited resources available within the special education system, increasing parent involvement in special education therapies could improve service delivery. However, providers must first understand what parents need to participate in therapies before attempting to engage families. 217 parents completed an online survey consistin
