Assessment of Bacterial Community and Other Microorganism Along the Lam Takhong Watercourse, Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Lam Takhong, a vital watercourse in Nakhon Ratchasima province, Thailand, supports agricultural, recreational, and urban activities. Originating in a national park, it flows through urban areas before discharging into a dam and running off via the sluice gate. While water quality monitoring is routine, microbial community data have never been reported. This study assesses the microorganism diversity and functional genes in Lam Takhong watercourse using a shotgun sequencing metagenomics approach. Water samples were collected from the upstream, midstream, and downstream sections. The midstream a

Factors associated with occupational injuries in seasonal young workers.

BACKGROUND: Younger workers are more likely to be injured on the job than older workers. Investigation tends to focus on work-related explanatory factors but often neglects non-work-related causes. AIMS: To identify both work- and non-work-related factors that contribute to younger workers' injuries in seasonal work. METHODS: Two surveys of a set of seasonal parks and recreation workers were conducted measuring health and safety behaviours and self-reported injuries. RESULTS: Seventy per cent reported an injury at work over the summer. Among young workers, each additional year of age was as

The prevalence of antibiotic-resistant fecal bacteria in recreational aquatic environments: Phenotypic and molecular approach.

The rising incidence of antibiotic resistance poses a significant threat to public health. In recent years the widespread use of antibiotics has led to an increase in the concentration of antibiotic-resistant bacteria also in natural environments. The study was conducted in bathing areas three recreational lakes located in the Zaborski Landscape Park in northern Poland. Water samples were collected in three parallel repetitions in April, June and September 2022. Our study indicates that anthropopressure connected with tourism and recreation promotes the growth of fecal bacteria, including anti

A Fatal Case of Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis from Recreational Waters.

BACKGROUND: Naegleria Fowleri is a single-cell, thermophilic amphizoid amoeba, and a rare known causative agent for primary amoebic meningoencephalitis with >97% mortality rate. The amoeba resides in freshwater lakes and ponds but can also survive in inadequately chlorinated pools and recreational waters. The mode of infection includes activities such as diving or jumping into freshwater or submerging the head under the water. Although most commonly seen in the southern United States, it is essential to keep this clinical suspicion in mind regardless of geography, as presenting symptoms can be

Modelling tick bite risk by combining random forests and count data regression models.

The socio-economic and demographic changes that occurred over the past 50 years have dramatically expanded urban areas around the globe, thus bringing urban settlers in closer contact with nature. Ticks have trespassed the limits of forests and grasslands to start inhabiting green spaces within metropolitan areas. Hence, the transmission of pathogens causing tick-borne diseases is an important threat to public health. Using volunteered tick bite reports collected by two Dutch initiatives, here we present a method to model tick bite risk using human exposure and tick hazard predictors. Our meth

Child Development and the Community Environment: Understanding Overweight across the Income Gradient.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is associated with increased risk of long-term health consequences. Despite the wealth of research, prevalence rates are still high, particularly among lower-income groups. Little is known about variations in risk of overweight/obesity across income gradients and the adolescent developmental stage. This study examines the association between distal community factors and adolescent weight status across income gradients and whether this association is moderated by age. METHODS: Using a nationally representative sample of 33,096 adolescents drawn from the National S

Associations of Maternal Educational Level, Proximity to Green Space During Pregnancy, and Gestational Diabetes With Body Mass Index From Infancy to Early Adulthood: A Proof-of-Concept Federated Analysis in 18 Birth Cohorts.

International sharing of cohort data for research is important and challenging. We explored the feasibility of multicohort federated analyses by examining associations between 3 pregnancy exposures (maternal education, exposure to green vegetation, and gestational diabetes) and offspring body mass index (BMI) from infancy to age 17 years. We used data from 18 cohorts (n = 206,180 mother-child pairs) from the EU Child Cohort Network and derived BMI at ages 0-1, 2-3, 4-7, 8-13, and 14-17 years. Associations were estimated using linear regression via 1-stage individual participant data meta-analy

The coupled study of metal concentrations and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of lichens (Hypogymnia physodes) from the Świętokrzyski National Park-environmental implications.

SO2, NOx, and metals (including Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Mn, Mg, Fe) present in airborne particulate matter are a major threat to preserving good air quality. The complicated pathways and transformation processes that can change their physical/chemical state in the atmosphere renders identifying their origin extremely difficult. With the objective of alleviating this difficulty, we identified and characterized potential local and regional sources of atmospheric pollutants using bioindicators (Hypogymnia physodes) from the Świętokrzyski National Park (SE Poland): 20 lichen samples were collected during

A comparison of HIV infection and related risk factors between money boys and noncommercial men who have sex with men in Shenzhen, China.

BACKGROUND: HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM) has become an increasing concern in China. Money boys (MBs) are a subgroup of MSM who sell sex to men. Direct comparison of HIV prevalence and related risk factors between MB and noncommercial MSM (ncMSM) has rarely been done. This study was conducted to make the comparison. METHODS: Eight hundred fifty MBs and 801 ncMSM were parallel recruited in Shenzhen by time-location sampling. Their behavioral and serologic data on HIV and syphilis were collected and compared. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to evalua

Prenatal exposure to residential greenness, fetal growth, and birth outcomes: a cohort study in New York City.

Findings for greenspace's impacts on birth outcomes are largely dependent on vegetation indexes. Examinations are needed for various greenspace indicators given varying pathways for fetal development. This prospective cohort study assessed the impacts of prenatal greenspace exposure on preterm birth (PTB), term low birthweight (TLBW), birthweight, and estimated fetal weight (EFW) for pregnant women in the New York City area, 2016-2023 (n = 2765). Longitudinal greenspace exposure was measured for residential histories during pregnancy using the enhanced vegetation index for 1000 m buffers and f

Genetic diversity of trypanosomes pathogenic to livestock in tsetse flies from the Nech Sar National Park in Ethiopia: A concern for tsetse suppressed area in Southern Rift Valley?

In Ethiopia, home to the largest African herd of cattle, animal trypanosomiasis is a major constraint to the efforts made for food self-sufficiency. We searched for trypanosomes in tsetse flies caught in the Nech Sar National Park (NSNP), Southern Rifty Valley, Ethiopia, at the district of Arba Minch where intensive tsetse control is successfully improving cattle productivity. Despite narrow geographical and temporal scales of our survey, we found a remarkable diversity of trypanosomes using the sensitive and discriminative method of fluorescent fragment length barcoding. We also found a high

New insights from Gorongosa National Park and Niassa National Reserve of Mozambique increasing the genetic diversity of Trypanosoma vivax and Trypanosoma vivax-like in tsetse flies, wild ungulates and livestock from East Africa.

BACKGROUND: Trypanosoma (Duttonella) vivax is a major pathogen of livestock in Africa and South America (SA), and genetic studies limited to small sampling suggest greater diversity in East Africa (EA) compared to both West Africa (WA) and SA. METHODS: Multidimensional scaling and phylogenetic analyses of 112 sequences of the glycosomal glyceraldehyde phosphate dehydrogenase (gGAPDH) gene and 263 sequences of the internal transcribed spacer of rDNA (ITS rDNA) were performed to compare trypanosomes from tsetse flies from Gorongosa National Park and Niassa National Reserve of Mozambique (MZ), w

The transportation safety of elderly pedestrians: Modeling contributing factors to elderly pedestrian collisions.

For the elderly, walking is an important, reliable mobility option, since the elderly frequently lose their physical and/or sensory ability to drive as their age increases. However, elderly pedestrians are vulnerable on the streets and are at great risk of injury or death, when involved in a collision. This is due to not only increased frailty but also such issues as reaction speed and confidence on the streets. Therefore, pedestrian safety for older adults is a growing concern. This paper comprehensively examines the relationship between physical conditions and elderly pedestrian safety at th

The important zoonoses in the protected areas of the Tatra National Park (TANAP).

The northern part of Slovakia constitutes an important tourist and recreational area of the country. Protected localities of the Tatra National Park (TANAP) are characterised by specific ecological conditions. The high numbers of animals inhabiting protected areas of the TANAP and their potential encounters with tourists contribute to a risk of transmission of important parasitic zoonoses. The aim of presently reported study was to perform a long-lasting and detailed survey on the occurrence of zoonotic agents (in particular Echinococcus multilocularis and Trichinella spp.) with particular emp

Associations between natural area availability and morbidity: a cross-sectional study using health insurance billing data from Germany.

OBJECTIVES: Access to nature has been associated with improved physical and mental health through multiple pathways, including stress reduction, physical activity promotion and reduced chronic disease risks. In contrast, urban areas lacking nature often expose residents to pollution, noise and heat. This study examines whether natural area availability is associated with morbidity. DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional study using 2023 outpatient billing data, with the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) as a measure of morbidity. (Mixed) linear regression models were applied in ecological-regi

Family poverty, neighbourhood greenspace and perinatal outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between low income and adverse perinatal outcomes, such as low birth weight and developmental delays, is well established making the search for protective factors important. One such factor may be neighbourhood greenspace. This study elucidates the role of urban neighbourhood greenspace in the relationship between income and perinatal outcomes in a nationally representative birth cohort from the UK. METHODS: Data on 14 050 infants participating in the initial wave at age 9 months of the Millennium Cohort Study were used (51% male, 20% non-white, 52% living in disad

High level of intrinsic phenotypic antimicrobial resistance in enterobacteria from terrestrial wildlife in Gabonese national parks.

Data on the prevalence of antibiotic resistance in Enterobacteriaceae in African wildlife are still relatively limited. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of phenotypic intrinsic and acquired antimicrobial resistance of enterobacteria from several species of terrestrial wild mammals in national parks of Gabon. Colony culture and isolation were done using MacConkey agar. Isolates were identified using the VITEK 2 and MALDI-TOF methods. Antibiotic susceptibility was analysed and interpreted according to the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing guidelines.

Cytomegaloviruses in a Community of Wild Nonhuman Primates in Taï National Park, Côte D'Ivoire.

Cytomegaloviruses (CMVs) are known to infect many mammals, including a number of nonhuman primates (NHPs). However, most data available arose from studies led on captive individuals and little is known about CMV diversity in wild NHPs. Here, we analyzed a community of wild nonhuman primates (seven species) in Taï National Park (TNP), Côte d'Ivoire, with two PCR systems targeting betaherpesviruses. CMV DNA was detected in 17/87 primates (4/7 species). Six novel CMVs were identified in sooty mangabeys, Campbell's monkeys and Diana monkeys, respectively. In 3/17 positive individuals (from three N

An exploratory study of dog park visits as a risk factor for exposure to drug-resistant extra-intestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC).

BACKGROUND: Extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) are common causative agents of urinary tract infections in humans. Dogs have been found to harbor ExPEC. This study tested stool samples from dogs (n = 16), the shoes of dog park visitors (n = 16) and the shoes of controls (n = 16) for ExPEC. Phenotypic resistance of isolates was characterized. FINDINGS: ExPEC were present in one-third of the dog stool samples, 9% of the samples from the shoes of dog park visitors and 6% of control samples. Half of the ExPEC isolates were multi-drug resistant. DISCUSSION: The findings suggest that dogs m
