Low-grade Cribriform Cystadenocarcinoma: A Review of the Literature and Case Report.

Low-grade cribriform cystadenocarcinoma (LGCCC) is a rare tumor of the salivary gland that most often arises from the parotid gland. A 51-year-old man developed a small mass on the right parotid gland 5 years ago. A preoperative magnetic resonance image showed abnormal intensity, an atypical characteristic for such a tumor; therefore, the diagnosis was difficult. Thus, a superficial parotidectomy was performed as a total excisional biopsy to remove the tumor. Histopathological analyses revealed that the tumor was composed of a single cyst comprising cells containing mucosal fluid, with prolife

Tumors in the parotid are not relatively more often malignant in children than in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Tumors of the parotid gland in children are rare and very little data has been published regarding the incidence of these tumors. We present a nationwide survey on this topic. METHODS: Data regarding benign and malignant tumors in the parotid gland in children from January 1st, 1990 to December 31st, 2005 in Denmark was collected retrospectively from nationwide registries. This generated 61 patients for inclusion in this study. RESULTS: 85% of the tumors were benign and the malignant tumors made up the last 15%. The most common of the malignant tumors was the acinic cell carcin

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of 407 salivary glands neoplasms in surgically treated patients in 2010-2020.

INTRODUCTION Tumors of the salivary glands account for approximately 3 to 4% of all head and neck neoplasms. It is estimated that 10-15% of them are malignant. The most common benign tumor is pleomorphic adenoma, while the most common malignant tumors are adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. Neoplasms of the salivary glands are extremely histologically diverse, which results from the complex embryogenesis of the salivary glands. The identified risk factors for tumors of the salivary glands are: ultraviolet radiation, ionizing radiation, viral infections, nicotine and alcohol.

Low incidence of second neoplasms among children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia after 1983.

Second malignant neoplasms are a serious complication after successful treatment of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). With improvement in survival, it is important to assess the impact of contemporary risk-based therapies on second neoplasms in ALL survivors. A cohort of 8831 children diagnosed with ALL and enrolled on Children's Cancer Group therapeutic protocols between 1983 and 1995 were observed to determine the incidence of second neoplasms and associated risk factors. The median age at diagnosis of ALL was 4.7 years. The cohort had accrued 54 883 person-years of follow-up. Si

The Role of FNAC in the Diagnosis and Management of Warthin Tumour: Analysis of 74 Cases.

Introduction  After pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin tumor gets its popularity as the second most common benign neoplasm of the parotid gland. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is the most cost-effective and minimally-invasive way to determine the histological character of a parotid gland tumor. Objective  To determine the accuracy of FNAC in the diagnosis of Warthin Tumour. Methods  A retrospective study conducted between 2014 and 2018. Out of 243 FNACs performed for parotid lesions, a histopathological correlation was established in 74 cases to reveal the accuracy of FNAC in the diagnosis o

Histopathological Correlation and Determination of Malignancy Risk in Reporting Parotid Gland Masses According to the Milan System.

OBJECTIVE: The Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) provides a standardized framework for interpreting salivary gland fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) samples and estimating the associated risk of malignancy (ROM). This study aimed to retrospectively reclassify parotid gland fine-needle aspiration (FNA) samples from our institution according to the MSRSGC, evaluate the correlation between preoperative cytological and postoperative histopathological findings, and determine the ROM for each diagnostic category. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 277 parotid glan

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma mimicking multiple facial nerve schwannoma.

Carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a rare, aggressive, poorly understood malignancy that usually occurs in the salivary glands. CXPA has been reported to account for 3.6% of all salivary neoplasms and 11.7% of salivary malignancies. CXPA not only has a low incidence rate but there are few papers or case reports reporting perineural invasion rates. We report a case of CXPA which occurred in the parotid gland, showing retrograde perineural invasion along the facial nerve back to the internal auditory canal (IAC).

Mesenchymal Neoplasms of Salivary Glands: A Clinicopathologic Study of 68 Cases.

Salivary gland neoplasms are uncommon, and most exhibit epithelial differentiation. Mesenchymal neoplasms of the salivary gland are rare, and the incidence ranges from 1.9% to 5%. The aim of this study is to identify the types and clinical-pathological features of mesenchymal salivary neoplasm and review their differential diagnosis. A retrospective search for mesenchymal neoplasms of salivary glands from our institution's pathology archives from the 2004-2021 period and consultation files of one of the authors (AER) was performed. The clinical data were obtained from available medical records

Myoepithelioma of minor salivary glands - A diagnostic challenge: Report of three cases with varied histomorphology.

Myoepitheliomas are rare, benign neoplasms affecting predominantly parotid gland and to a lesser extent minor salivary glands. In this article we have reported three cases with different histomorphological patterns. Two cases are from oral cavity and one from sinonasal tract, a very rare location. We have discussed different histomorphological patterns of myoepitheliomas, which at times possesses a real diagnostic dilemma to a pathologist. Along with its morphology, immunohistochemical profile and clinical behavior are discussed in detail with relevant review of literature.

Parotid Cystadenoma Presenting as Recurrent Parotitis: A Five-Case Retrospective Series and Preliminary Clinicopathological Features.

PURPOSE: Parotid cystadenoma is an uncommon benign epithelial salivary gland neoplasm. Rarely, it may present with recurrent inflammatory episodes, creating diagnostic uncertainty and operative complexity. To the authors' knowledge, this represents the largest reported case series specifically focused on histologically confirmed parotid cystadenoma presenting with recurrent parotitis. This case series describes five such patients and outlines preliminary clinicopathological features that may support recognition of this presentation, while acknowledging the exploratory nature of the observation

Parotid sebaceous lymphadenoma associated with Sjogren's syndrome: Review of pathologic and radiologic characteristics and clinical presentation.

Salivary lymphadenoma is an extremely rare neoplasm that is usually seen in the older patient population, arising sporadically on one side and almost exclusive to the parotid gland. Imaging and pathology findings can mimic both benign and malignant tumors, and therefore, this lesion may be misdiagnosed if not on the differential diagnosis. This article reviews the clinical presentation, as well as the pathology and imaging findings of salivary lymphadenoma in the setting of Sjogren's syndrome.

Management of advanced parotid cancer. A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Primary adenocarcinomas of the parotid gland are rare and account for less than 5% of all head and neck malignant neoplasms. There is considerable variation in biological behaviour within this group; low-grade tumours exhibit slow growth rates with minimal or no local invasion. High-grade tumours, however, show a high incidence of local recurrence and distant metastasis. AIM: The purpose of this paper is to analyse the important prognostic indicators for this cancer. METHODS: A systematic review was performed involving 19 published studies from 1987 to 2005 which included 4631 pa

Superficial parotidectomy as first choice for parotid tumours.

Parotid neoplasms represent 3% of all head and neck tumours, and most are benign. Malignant tumours account for 14-25% of cases. Surgery is the treatment of choice, with options ranging from simple enucleation to radical parotidectomy. Sixteen patients presented with a history of a painless parotid lump. Diagnosis was achieved by ultrasound scan and MRI. Fifteen superficial parotidectomies and 1 nerve-sparing total parotidectomy were carried out. At histology, 10 pleomorphic adenomas, 4 Warthin's tumours, 1 lymphoepithelial cyst and 1 sebaceous adenocarcinoma were detected. In the single case …

Fine-needle aspiration cytology for parotid lesions, can we avoid surgery?

OBJECTIVE: Salivary gland neoplasms are rare tumours, with most arising in the parotid gland. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a common method for preoperative evaluation of parotid masses, although its usefulness is controversial. This study was designed to evaluate the accuracy of FNAC in a large cohort of patients, with emphasis on diagnosis of benign tumours and especially Warthin tumour which can be managed conservatively. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series with chart review. SETTING: Tertiary medical centre. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: From 1991 to 2014, all patients 18 or old

Calcified Chondroid Mesenchymal Neoplasm of the Masticator Space: A Case Report.

Calcified chondroid mesenchymal neoplasm (CCMN) is a rare, recently defined tumor characterized by mesenchymal tissue with chondroid features and calcification. It typically harbors an FN1 fusion and shows a predilection for the temporomandibular joint and distal extremities. CCMN is benign and has not been associated with malignant behavior. We present the case of a 61-year-old woman with an eight-year history of a progressively enlarging, palpable mass in the left parotid region, associated with ipsilateral hearing loss and facial palsy. Imaging studies, including computed tomography (CT) an

Tuberculous parotitis: A series of eight cases and review of literature.

Although tuberculosis is a common health problem in developing countries such as India, tuberculous parotitis (tubercular involvement of parotid gland) is rarely encountered. Because of very low incidence and nonspecific symptoms, it is often misdiagnosed as parotid neoplasm. Ultrasonographic and computed tomographic findings are also noncontributory for this entity. Hence, to increase awareness about this rare entity, here, we report a series of eight cases of tuberculous parotitis which were diagnosed on fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and successfully treated with antitubercular drug

[Parotid basal cell adenoma of membranous type].

INTRODUCTION: Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare benign neoplasm characterized by the basaloid appearance of the tumour cells and the lack of myxo-chondroid stromal component present in pleomorphic adenoma. AIM: We report a case of basal cell adenoma of membranous type, highly suspected of malignancy because of the presence of mediastinal lymph nodes and pulmonary nodules which finally were related to an associated sarcoidosis. OBSERVATION: Our patient was an 80-year-old woman who presented a swelling of the right parotid two years ago. The clinical examination revealed a solid, indolent and

Myoepithelial Carcinoma Ex-Pleomorphic Adenoma: A Rare Pathology Misdiagnosed as Pleomorphic Adenoma; With a Novel TERT Promoter Mutation and High PD-L1 Expression.

Myoepithelial carcinoma (MECA) is a rare salivary gland (SG) neoplasm (0.1-0.45% of all SG tumors) that often presents with bland cytomorphology and can be misclassified as cellular pleomorphic adenoma (PA) or myoepithelioma. This is particularly challenging in MECA ex-PA cases, especially if tumor shows minimal to no capsular invasion. We report a rare case of a 76-year-old female; history of left superficial parotidectomy with diagnosis (outside hospital) of cellular PA, who re-presented 9 months post surgery with enlarging left parotid mass, neck lymphadenopathy and facial nerve deficits.
