Twin pregnancies complicated by infection due to parvovirus B19 are uncommon. We report a case in which only one fetus developed a symptomatic infection, which presented at first as ascites and pleural effusion; later, meconium peritonitis developed. Hydrops spontaneously resolved, and at birth meconium peritonitis was successfully treated with surgery. However, even with the positive outcome of this pregnancy, a long-term follow-up is needed to exclude damage other than injury to the erythropoietic system.

A juvenile raccoon (Procyon lotor) was found moribund near Fort Collins, Colorado (USA). Upon examination, the raccoon was dehydrated, had a mucopurulent oculonasal discharge and diarrhea, and was euthanized. Postmortem examination revealed emaciation, severe fibrinous gastroenteritis and a small, firm liver. Histopathological findings included blunting of villi, infiltration of lamina propria with neutrophils and plasma cells, and mild bronchopneumonia. Cryptosporidium sp. was demonstrated on intestinal villi and coronavirus and parvovirus were identified in feces. Fluorescent antibody test f…

A seven months old boy was admitted to hospital for investigation and treatment of severe anaemia. The final diagnosis was hereditary spherocytosis. When, six weeks later, he developed an aplastic crisis, serological criteria provided evidence of recent human parvovirus B19 infection. The same disease was detected in the family. Human parvovirus B19 is shown to be of particular interest in aplastic crisis.

Human parvovirus B19 commonly infects children, causing erythema infectiosum (fifth disease). However, there is a significant adult population which has not been exposed to the virus and, consequently, does not have protective antibody. Recent reports have associated B19 infection during pregnancy with fetal death, although normal outcome of pregnancy is more common. To characterise further the role of B19 infection in fetal deaths, a series of laboratory investigations has been undertaken on tissues obtained at autopsy. These have demonstrated the presence of virion-sized DNA by Southern blot…

Two Japanese outbreaks of erythema infectiosum were investigated for evidence of human parvovirus infection by a solid phase antibody capture radioimmunoassay based on a monoclonal antibody to human parvovirus. Specific IgM and high concentrations of specific IgG were detected in 37 sera from 27 children with erythema infectiosum. No anti human parvovirus IgM was detected in a remaining case of erythema infectiosum, in five patients with Kawasaki disease, or in the 17 control children. Seven of the controls were also anti human parvovirus IgG negative, and the 10 who were seropositive had lowe…

Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) infection can cause various clinical presentations. While mostly erythema infectiosum, transient aplastic crisis, and fetal hydrops are seen, it rarely causes myocarditis, hepatitis, or vasculitis. We report a patient admitted with fever, fatigue, arthralgia, and rash. Although there was no aetiological clue in the first-line studies, the tests were repeated because of clinical suspicion. Therefore, >4-fold increase in PVB19 IgM titer, IgG seroconversion, and pathological findings led to the diagnosis of leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LCV) related to PVB19. We aimed to emp…

In 2024, an extreme increase in the number of parvovirus B19 (B19V) infections occurred worldwide, including in the pregnant population, resulting in severe foetal morbidity and mortality. We describe the case of a 37-year-old patient (G2/P1) who was 26 weeks 0 days pregnant at admission and who presented with foetal hydrops and mirror syndrome due to B19V infection and sudden onset of acute perimyocarditis in the mother, possibly triggered by the foetal situation and severe anaemia. Foetal hydrops is a life-threatening manifestation of foetal infection with B19V. Independent of whether it is …

Parvoviruses pose a significant threat to the livestock breeding industry, leading to high morbidity and mortality rates. Rapid, accurate, and convenient detection methods are crucial for early intervention and control of parvovirus infection. This study established a novel visualized parvovirus detection method based on nucleic acid-mismatched enzyme detection—NMED. This method targets a conserved region of the Canine Parvo Virus (CPV) VP2 gene by utilizing specific fluorescent reporter probes and Recombinant Polymerase Amplification༈RPA༉ primers. Upon recognition of the target sequence by th…

Myositis is a condition characterized by muscle inflammation due to multiple etiologies, including autoimmune disease, medication, and infection. Viral myositis is most frequently seen in children after influenza infection, but Parvovirus B19 has also rarely been associated with myositis. We report the case of a 42-year-old male with a medical history of low back pain due to spondylosis who presented to the hospital with a one-month history of bilateral thigh and calf pain associated with subjective weakness and a one-week history of fevers. His wife and son were diagnosed with Parvovirus B19 …

In recent years, an emerging infectious disease characterized by urate deposition in viscera and joints has outbreak in the goose farms of China, causing substantial economic losses. Although goose astrovirus (GoAstV) was believed to be the main causative pathogen, several studies have shown that co-infection with other viruses, such as goose parvovirus, alongside astrovirus, may exacerbate the disease condition. In our previous research, we isolated a goose astrovirus with a novel type of recombination that causes fatal gout in geese in Shanghai, China. By analyzing the viral community using …

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS), a highly contagious disease, has been reported in duck farms in Vietnam since 2019. In this study, we evaluated the virulence and characterized the virus obtained from SBDS cases in North Vietnam.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Polymerase chain reaction was used to detect waterfowl parvovirus in ducks, and the virus from positive samples was inoculated into 10-day-old duck-embryonated eggs to reproduce the disease in young ducklings to determine the virulence and subjected to phylogenetic analysis of non-structural (NS) and VP1 gene sequenc…

From April 2023 to May 2024, an unusual epidemic of parvovirus B19 (B19V) infections occurred in France. The number of B19V IgM-positive serologies was four times higher than in the previous epidemic in 2019. Clinical data from emergency networks corroborated this observation. Morbidity and mortality consequences were observed in children through all data sources. In adults, the increase was only observed in laboratory-confirmed data. Physicians and decisionmakers should be informed in order to better prevent, diagnose and manage at-risk patients.

A novel virus, temporarily named "Arctic wolf parvovirus" (AWPV), was discovered in a pharyngeal metagenomic library derived from an Arctic wolf (Canis lupus arctos) in China. The genome sequence was assigned GenBase accession number C_AA071902.1. AWPV has a genome comprised of 4,920 base pairs with a nucleotide composition of 36.4% A, 23.4% T, 18.2% G, and 22.0% C, with a GC content of 40.2%. Its structure resembles parvoviruses, containing two open reading frames: the nonstructural (NS) region encoding replication enzymes and the structural (VP) region encoding capsid protein. Pairwise seque…

OBJECTIVES: Parvovirus B19 (B19V) infection in pregnancy is generally asymptomatic, but in about 3% it can cause complications, including miscarriage, severe foetal anaemia and foetal hydrops. The seroprevalence in pregnancy ranges from 20% to 82% in Africa, but there are no data for Benin. We therefore retrospectively assessed the seroprevalence of B19V in pregnant women attending the Saint Jean de Dieu Hospital in Tanguiéta, a rural district of Atacora, in northern Benin.
METHODS: We searched for anti-B19V immunoglobulin M (IgM) and immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies in 227 sequential sera f…

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune thyroid diseases are the most frequent autoimmune disorders, with a global prevalence of about 10%. Several mechanisms have been proposed to induce autoimmune thyroid responses by infectious agents. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association between parvovirus B19 infection and autoimmune thyroid disorders.
METHODS: Adult patients with newly diagnosed Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and healthy euthyroid controls were recruited. Various clinical and biochemical parameters, including thyroid function tests and serum parvovirus B19 antibody …
