Electromyographic information was obtained from seven right shoulder complex muscles in nine subjects (three normal, three paraplegic, and three quadriplegic) during the occupational therapy activity of bilateral sanding on an incline board, an activity that has been recommended as a treatment modality to strengthen the triceps brachii. Electromyography revealed that the anterior and middle portions of the deltoid were the muscles most responsible for the subjects' arm movements during both resisted and unresisted bilateral sanding . Triceps lateralis and medialis were also active during the u

This study was conducted to characterize metabolic features of the breast muscle (pectoralis major) in chickens affected with the Wooden Breast myopathy. Live birds from two purebred chicken lines and one crossbred commercial broiler population were clinically examined by manual palpation of the breast muscle (pectoralis major) at 47-48 days of age. Metabolite abundance was determined by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) using breast muscle tissue samples from 16 affected and 16 unaffected chickens. Muscle gl

A dramatic change in the techniques of immediate pharyngeal reconstruction in the last 10 years is largely due to the availability of myocutaneous flaps, microvascular techniques, and the increasing popularity of the "gastric pull-up" operation. The experience of the Head and Neck Service of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in repair of the pharynx following pharyngeal resection between 1974 and 1983 is reviewed and the changing trends in the philosophy of pharyngeal reconstruction are highlighted. The methods of reconstruction used were deltopectoral flap, gastric pull-up, free microvas

We measured the electromyographic (EMG) activity in four chest wall and trunk (CWT) muscles, the erector spinae, latissimus dorsi, pectoralis major, and trapezius, together with the parasternal, in four normal subjects during graded inspiratory efforts against an occlusion in both upright and seated postures. We also measured CWT EMGs in six seated subjects during inspiratory resistive loading at high and low tidal volumes [1,280 +/- 80 (SE) and 920 +/- 60 ml, respectively]. With one exception, CWT EMG increased as a function of inspiratory pressure generated (Pmus) at all lung volumes in both

BACKGROUND: Pectoralis major ruptures are rare injuries that can occur at several parts of the muscle. Little is known of the pathoanatomic process and performance following pectoralis major ruptures in young athletes.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The objective of this study was to describe a series of pectoralis major ruptures in military academy athletes at the US Military Academy and US Naval Academy. We hypothesized that military academy athletes will demonstrate a different rupture location than previously reported in older patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: A r

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is a rare condition in children. Compression of the neurovascular bundle as it passes from the neck through the thorax into the arm may be produced by numerous anatomic and structural abnormalities. This case represents compression produced by spasm of the pectoralis minor muscle originating from costochondritis.

Poland's Syndrome is a rare congenital condition. It is classically characterised by absence of unilateral chest wall muscles and sometimes ipsilateralsymbrachydactyly (abnormally short and webbed fingers). The condition typically presents with unilateral absence of the sternal or breast bone portion of the pectoralis major muscle which may or may not be associated with the absence of nearby musculoskeletal structures. Most of the Poland Syndrome is sporadic. We report a 19-year-old patient with variant of Poland Syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the few documented cases o

OBJECTIVE: In the presence of acute inflammation and necrosis of the wall, tracheo-bronchial defects are difficult to manage. The absence of adequate vascularization and the contaminated area prevent successful direct re-suturing.
METHODS: In order to restore a sufficient blood supply we used a pedicled latissimus dorsi or a pectoralis major flap that was entered into the thorax after a 10-cm resection of the second rib. A portion of the muscle was fitted into the tracheo/bronchial defect by reinforced sutures. The remaining muscle was sutured to the tissue surrounding the defect. This method

PURPOSE: This unique case gives the extent of knowledge in the axilla area with axillary arch (AA) and a discussion of its clinical importance.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: The anatomical anomaly was found during the dissection class for the brachial plexus. It was identified through the precise dissection of the structures bilaterally.
RESULTS: The cadaver had fascial and muscular AA bilaterally. The fascial AA was separated into the superficial and deep arch group. The superficial arch group connected to the clavipectoral fascia and the axillary fascia. The deep arch group attached to the subscap

Background: A manual wheelchair is an essential assistive device for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, long-term use typically requires repetitive forward pushing on the pushrims, which overuses anterior upper-body muscles and contributes to shoulder muscle imbalance and pain. To address these issues, a detachable two-way propulsion system was developed to allow both pushing and pulling movements, with the pulling method designed to enhance posterior muscle activation. Methods: Electromyography (EMG) was performed on eight upper-body muscles in eight older adults with SCI (me

This case focuses on breast cancer surgery in the setting of Poland syndrome (PS), a rare congenital condition characterised by unilateral absence or hypoplasia of the pectoral muscles. The literature describing breast cancer in patients with PS is limited. We present a case of an elderly woman with left-sided PS in whom breast cancer was incidentally detected during routine surveillance imaging for malignant melanoma. Imaging and biopsy confirmed a small invasive carcinoma, and the patient underwent mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy. Intraoperatively, the absence of the pectoralis ma

Poland syndrome is a rare congenital developmental deformity characterized by unilateral agenesis or hypoplasia of thoracic wall soft tissue. We report two adult cases of Poland syndrome detected by computed tomography (CT) images. CT images of the two cases depicted an asymmetric chest wall with the absence of a breast and agenesis of the pectoralis muscles. A physical examination of case 1 showed a thin right chest wall with depression of the right nipple region. Hand deformities were also observed, including brachydactyly and syndactyly. In case 2, hand deformities were not found in a physi…

Pectoralis major tendon ruptures are being reported with increasing frequency and primarily occur in young, high demand, male patients. The injury results from an eccentric contracture of the muscle most commonly while performing the bench press maneuver during weight training. In the setting of both acute and chronic injury, physical examination is critical for a timely and accurate diagnosis. During physical examination, comparison with the opposite side is imperative, and findings may include swelling, ecchymosis, loss of the anterior axillary fold, and a decreased pectoralis major index. CASE: A 27-year-old right-hand-dominant National Football League (NFL) quarterback injured his right shoulder after falling with the elbow flexed and the shoulder flexed and slightly abducted. He noted an immediate onset of right anterior shoulder pain, but was able to continue playing and throwing without notable deficit. Magnetic resonance imaging of the chest revealed an isolated tear of the pectoralis minor tendon. The patient received nonoperative local treatment and was able to start as quarterback at the next game.
CONCLUSION: An isolated pectoralis minor tear in the dominant arm of a

It is important to discuss the importance of synchronous balance between periscapular muscles for scapulothoracic motion and resultant scapulohumeral rhythm. Abnormalities in this balance can lead to scapular dyskinesia and winging, affecting shoulder motion and leading to impingement. Strategies exist to diagnose and differentiate between pathologies such as muscle paralysis (eg, trapezius or serratus anterior) or overactivity (eg, pectoralis minor). The physician should be aware of the role of diagnostic imaging, as well as the unique considerations for patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

Anatomical variations of the nerves, muscles, and vessels in the upper limb have been described in many anatomical studies; however, the occurrence of 6 variations in an ipsilateral limb is very rare. These variations occur in the following structures: the pectoralis minimus muscle, the communication between the external jugular vein and cephalic vein, axillary arch, the Struthers ligament, the medial, lateral, and posterior cords of the brachial plexus, and the common arterial trunk from the third part of the axillary artery. The relationship of these variations to each other and their probab

Poland syndrome is characterized by partial or complete absence of pectoralis muscles, ipsilateral syndactyly, and occasionally other malformations of the anterior chest wall and breast. Other associated anomalies, including dextrocardia, renal malformations, and vertebral anomalies, have been reported in rare cases. The condition is more frequent among males, and usually occurs on the right hemithorax in the unilateral form. The syndrome is believed to be caused by a genetic disorder that reduces the embryonal circulation in the subclavian and vertebral arteries. We report a 20-year-old man w…
