Measuring the cost and effectiveness of peer-supported social care in prisons.

OBJECTIVES: In many prisons, some imprisoned individuals are trained to meet the non-personal social care needs of fellow inmates yet there is little quantitative or economic evidence of the value of these schemes. In this study we investigated how to best monitor and measure their effectiveness and cost, the current state of data collection in England and Wales and where there are data gaps. STUDY DESIGN: Part of a larger multi-site rapid mixed-methods evaluation of social care peer-support services in prisons. This sub-study included a rapid scoping review, interviews with staff, a stakehol

Investigating Key Elements of Peer Support Programs Focused on Recovery and Reentry in Community-Based Organizations: A Qualitative Implementation Science Study.

BACKGROUND: Peer support programs are recognized as an evidence-based practice to effectively support individuals in recovery from substance use and reduce recidivism. Peer support is provided by trained individuals with lived experience who guide individuals navigating similar life challenges. Organizations design and structure peer support programs differently; some have developed unique approaches to meet the needs of the individuals they serve. This study provides guidance for implementing peer support programs within community based organizations with a focus on recovery or reentry after

The Role of Friends in Supporting Young People With Cancer: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: Peers play a crucial role in supporting wellbeing and psychosocial development for young people aged 12-25. However, a cancer experience often leads to challenges maintaining friendships. There have been no prior attempts to map or synthesise available research or resources on support specifically from friends for young people with cancer, limiting the capacity to draw conclusions or determine next steps for how to best support young people with cancer. This review aims to address this gap by mapping and synthesising the available literature and resources. METHODS: Included studies

[Overlooked professionalism-Individual factors for success of peer support workers].

BACKGROUND: The peer support worker is becoming increasingly more relevant also due to the new personnel regulations. Therefore, the question arises which individual conditions for success are available for the implementation of peer support workers. METHOD: This study is a subproject of ImpPeer-Psy5 study financed by Innovation Funds, which investigates the nationwide requirements for the implementation of peer support workers in care financed by health insurance funds (German Social Act V, SGB V). Using a comparative thematic analysis, 57 problem-oriented interviews with peer support worker

School bullying and peer relationships in children with chronic pain.

Preliminary evidence suggests that there are significant associations between bullying and chronic pain, as well as between the quality of peer relationships and psychological function in youth with chronic pain. However, these findings have yet to be replicated, and the role that bullying plays in anxiety in children and adolescents with chronic pain has not yet been examined. This study sought to expand our understanding of the associations between measures of bullying and quality of peer relationships and pain-related function domains in a community sample of schoolchildren with chronic pai

Predictors of Substance Use Risk in Nurse Anesthetists.

BACKGROUND: Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) are exposed daily to highly addictive substances and stressful work environments, placing them at risk for substance use disorders (SUDs). Previous research, which is scarce, indicated that drugs of choice were opioids and propofol. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate predictors of SUD risk using the World Health Organization Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test. METHOD: From June to July 2020, an online survey was sent via the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology Research Survey Servi

Friend influence and susceptibility to influence on emotions towards math: The role of adolescent temperament.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Peer relationships during adolescence play an important role in shaping academic outcomes. The present study examined friend influences on emotions towards math, as well as the role of temperament in these influences. SAMPLE: The sample consisted of 350 Finnish students (mean age 13.29 years; 64% girls) who were involved in stable friendship dyads from fall to spring of Grade 7. METHODS: In this two-wave study, information on adolescents' temperament (i.e., negative emotionality, extraversion, effortful control) and on seven emotions towards math (i.e., enjoyment, hope,

How peer relationships influence adolescents' reasoning about theft-based moral transgressions.

Two studies (Ntotal = 1,153) investigated how adolescents reason about whether to report a transgression committed by a close friend versus distant classmate. In Study 1, sixth-ninth graders (Mage = 12.36 years, SDage = 1.14 years; 55% girls, 44% boys; 2% Asian, 63% Black, 13% Latino, 7% multiracial, 7% White; low-income urban schools) were less willing to report close friends than distant classmates, for both high- and low-severity thefts. In Study 2, seventh-eighth graders (Mage = 12.87 years, SDage = 0.07 years; 48% girls, 45% boys; 2% Asian, 2% Black, 3% Latino, 85% White, 2% multiracial;

Share-the-load vs bring-your-own-judge: The effects of friends on social evaluative stress in early adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: Parental attachment figures effectively buffer their children's cortisol responses to a socially evaluative stressor, the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST), by providing instrumental and emotional support during the preparation period. The effectiveness of parents as stress buffers wanes in adolescence as youth increase their reliance on peers for support. Yet, in a previous study, when peers played the same supportive role as parents, the cortisol response to the TSST was amplified. Here we asked if the role the friend plays matters. We hypothesized that the support of a friend would

Peer-based intervention for acute stress reaction: adaptations by five militaries.

Military service members need to be able to operate under conditions of extreme stress to ensure the success of their team's mission; however, an acute stress reaction (ASR) can compromise team safety and effectiveness by rendering an individual unable to function. Building on an intervention originally developed by the Israel Defense Forces, several countries have developed, tested, and disseminated a peer-based intervention to help service members manage acute stress in others. This paper reviews how five countries (Canada, Germany, Norway, the UK and the USA) adjusted the protocol to fit th

Peer-Mediated Interventions for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: A Systematic Review of Reviews of Social and Behavioral Outcomes.

Peer-mediated interventions (PMIs) have been firmly established as evidence-based approaches for facilitating peer relationships among students with and without disabilities. We conducted a review of reviews evaluating PMI studies to support social skills and positive behavioral outcomes for children, adolescents, and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). A total of 4,254 individuals with IDD were participants across 43 reviews of the literature, reflecting 357 unique studies. This review includes coding related to participant demographic information, interventio

"Teaching somebody else makes you a better person:" A phenomenological exploration of the importance of informal peer support for individuals with spinal cord injury.

BACKGROUND: Peer support is widely recognized as an important aspect of health promotion for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). Reports indicate positive effects for the recipients of either informal and formal peer support. The experience can also be meaningful to the person(s) providing support, although the value to providers is not well studied. OBJECTIVE: This study examines the experience of provision of and receipt of informal peer support for individuals with SCI through semi-structured interviews. METHODS: Data were analysed using a qualitative phenomenological approach. 16

Peer victimization and Internet addiction among adolescents: The role of anger rumination and social dominance orientation.

INTRODUCTION: Internet addiction has garnered growing attention in recent years, and peer victimization plays a major contributor to adolescents' Internet addiction. However, little is known about the mediating and moderating mechanisms in the association between peer victimization and Internet addiction. Guided by cognitive behavioral model and worldview verification model, this study examined a moderated mediation model in which anger rumination at Time 1 (T1) mediated the association between peer victimization at T1 and Internet addiction at Time 2 (T2), and this mediation effect was modera

Peer and Parental Social Norms as Determinants of Gambling Initiation: A Prospective Study.

PURPOSE: Despite the potential consequences of gambling during adolescence, the factors involved in the initiation of this behavior are relatively understudied. Using a longitudinal design, the present study analyzed the contribution of parental and peer norms to adolescent gambling initiation. METHODS: A sample of 440 adolescent non-gamblers (50.9% males, meanage = 14.85 [standard deviation = 1.41]) completed a baseline survey and a 1-year follow-up questionnaire. The baseline survey included assessments of perceived descriptive and injunctive norms from parents and peers, perceived parent a

Co-Regulation as a Support for Older Youth in the Context of Foster Care: a Scoping Review of the Literature.

Co-regulation is a relatively new theoretical framework for interventions that connects developmental science to adolescent needs and provides strategies that can be applied across contexts. It also has value in shifting the focus of interventions to the role of relationships and interactions with caring adults, as well as supportive environments. This framework may be particularly salient for older youth with foster care experience whose relationships with adults and availability of developmental supports are disrupted. To understand how co-regulation aligns with current understanding of need

Peer effects on health-related behaviours of adolescents in Scotland using social network analysis: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that adolescent norms and behaviours may be influenced by peers. The aim of this study was to investigate social clustering of health outcomes among school friendship groups. METHODS: Cross-sectional surveys were collected from Oct 26, 2022, to March 30, 2023, in four secondary schools in Scotland's central belt, and all Secondary 2 (12-13 years) and Secondary 4 (14-15 years) students were invited to take part. Schools self-selected into the study, between 6% and 27% had a free school meal registration (Scotland average 25%). The survey asked about healt

Daily Fluctuations in Adolescents' Perceived Friend Dominance and Friendship Clout: Associations with Mood and the Moderating Role of Anxiety.

Emerging evidence suggests that whereas occupying high peer status promotes adolescents' well-being, feeling dominated by friends confers psychological costs. However, little is known about day-to-day power dynamics of adolescents' friendships or their acute affective consequences. This 14-day intensive longitudinal study introduced novel daily assessments of friend dominance and friendship clout, examined their associations with mood, and tested anxiety as a moderator. Participants were 195 11th-graders (Mage = 16.48, SDage = 0.35; 66% female). Multilevel models revealed that adolescents expe

Pubertal timing and adolescent outcomes: investigating explanations for associations with a genetically informed design.

BACKGROUND: Psychopathology and risky behaviors increase during adolescence, and understanding which adolescents are most at risk informs prevention and intervention efforts. Pubertal timing relative to same-sex, same-age peers is a known correlate of adolescent outcomes among both boys and girls. However, it remains unclear whether this relation is better explained by a plausible causal process or unobserved familial liability. METHODS: We extended previous research by examining associations between pubertal timing in early adolescence (age 14) and outcomes in later adolescence (age 17) in a
