Gambling is a highly visible and socially embedded activity among young people, with marketing, social practices, and digital platforms shaping perceptions and behaviours. This article presents a narrative review of qualitative studies (2015-25) exploring how gambling is normalized among youth and younger adults (up to 35 years), and how they perceive and respond to these processes. Four themes were constructed from n = 22 articles using a reflexive approach to thematic analysis. First, gambling was socially constructed as a normative activity through early family exposure and peer group pract

This study compared muscle synergies during gait in children with acquired brain injury (ABI) and typically-developing (TD) peers, and examined the influence of gait deviations and injury onset on synergy characteristics. Retrospective treadmill-based 3D gait analysis was conducted in 35 children with ABI in the chronic stage (mean age 11.1 ± 3.7 years; 6.0 ± 4.4 years post-injury) and 21 TD peers. Surface electromyography of seven bilateral lower-limb muscles was analyzed using non-negative matrix factorization. Synergies of the more affected leg were assessed with the dynamic-motor-control-i

This study modeled the influences of cortisol reactivity, androgens, age-corrected pubertal status, parental personality, family and peer dysfunction on behavioral self-regulation (BSR), in boys at high (HAR) and low average risk (LAR) for substance abuse. Differences between risk groups in cortisol and androgen concentrations, and cortisol reactivity were also examined. Subjects were 10- through 12-year-old sons of substance abusing fathers (HAR; n = 150) and normal controls (LAR; n = 147). A multidimensional construct of BSR was developed which utilized multiple measures and multiple informa

INTRODUCTION: Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) trainees are college students who complete military courses and participate in physical and tactical training under the direction of military Service Members assigned to ROTC programs to serve as faculty and staff at US colleges. ROTC trainees report musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs) attributable to ROTC training in line with MSKI incidence in other training environments. However, concealment is prevalent, as 66% of MSKIs in ROTC go unreported. The current study investigated if a brief, online educational video could increase ROTC trainees'

BACKGROUND: Health behaviours such as smoking, alcohol use, physical activity, and dietary habits are not only individual choices but are in … lusion criteria. Findings highlighted consistent structural mechanisms across behaviours, including peer influence, homophily, network cohesion, and centrality. WNA proved particularly effective in identifying behaviour clusters, co-evolutionary processes between networks and behaviours, and structural barriers or facilitators of behavioural diffusion. BACKGROUND: Friendships become increasingly influential in early adolescence, leading to a greater impact of friends' norms on behavior. However, not all youth conform to norms, suggesting other factors may shape this influence. One such factor is friendship quality, which may shape adolescents' motivation to adopt peer norms, especially when those norms come from close, supportive friendships. This study examined how perceptions of friends' alcohol use and approval predict adolescents' intentions to drink, and whether friendship quality moderates these effects while disaggregating between- an

BACKGROUND: Young men in South Africa face concurrent epidemics of HIV, drug and alcohol abuse, and unemployment. Standard HIV prevention programs, located in healthcare settings and/or using counseling models, fail to engage men. Soccer and vocational training are examined as contexts to deliver male-specific, HIV prevention programs.
METHODS: Young men (n = 1200) are randomly assigned by neighborhood to one of three conditions: 1) soccer league (n = 400; eight neighborhoods); 2) soccer league plus vocational training (n = 400; eight neighborhoods); or 3) a control condition (n = 400; eight

The current mixed-methods study examined everyday problems among deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) adolescents across various life domains. To better understand the factors influencing levels of perceived stress, the impact of DHH adolescents' coping and pragmatic abilities was also examined. Thirty DHH adolescents completed questionnaires about everyday stressors and coping, and 13 of these respondents were interviewed regarding their everyday problems. All participants used spoken language and attended mainstream high schools. Teachers evaluated the pragmatic skills of each participant through

Adverse contextual drivers (eg, food, housing, transportation insecurity) influence health outcomes, particularly among individuals with chronic conditions. Electronic health record (EHR)-based care management tools can support screening and referrals for contextual drivers, but under-resourced health centers often lack support to integrate these tools into routine workflows. This pilot study assessed the feasibility of a multicomponent implementation support model to improve care managers' use of EHR tools to address contextual drivers. Three health centers within a national network using a s

Patients with sickle cell anemia often express myriad clinical signs and symptoms that affect their life-style and academic performance. Certain psychoeducational and psychosocial factors have been shown to influence the academic achievement of older patients with sickle cell anemia. However, studies evaluating the school readiness skills of younger children have not been published. To determine whether sickle cell anemia delays preschool development in children aged 4 to 6 years, we studied 10 affected children and 10 normal subjects matched for age, sex, and race. School readiness was evalua

BACKGROUND: Alcohol consumption is a significant public health concern worldwide, contributing substantially to disease burden and fatalities, especially among drivers. In Nepal, alcohol use is culturally accepted and widely prevalent, with evidence suggesting high consumption rates among bus drivers. This study aims to investigate alcohol consumption and drinking behaviours among bus drivers and staff's in the Banke district of Nepal.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 195 drivers and staff of public passenger vehicles categorized as "Kha" in Banke district, Nepal. Systema

The ubiquitous use of information and communication technologies among adolescents carries the risk of exposure to online victimization during this vulnerable stage of development, including cybergrooming as a form of sexual victimization. Although established in traditional abuse research, studies on disclosure processes in the specific context of cybergrooming victimization are still pending. The present study exploratively investigated reasons for and against disclosure following cybergrooming victimization in the subsample of n = 400 victims (44.1%; Mage = 15.48 years, girls: 57.5%) from N

Conversations shape future behaviors, particularly among young adults. However, young adults vary widely in their susceptibility to peer influence. What neural processes relate to this susceptibility? We examined whether activity in brain regions associated with social rewards and making sense of others' minds relates to a common health behavior-drinking, following conversations about alcohol. We studied ten social groups of college students (N = 104 students; 4760 total observations) across two university campuses. We collected whole-brain fMRI data while participants viewed photographs of pe…

Emotional support from friends is a crucial source of social support for adolescents, significantly influencing their psychological development. However, previous research has primarily focused on how this support correlates with general levels of socioemotional problems among adolescents, neglecting the significance of daily fluctuations in these problems. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between friend emotional support and both the average and dynamic indicators of daily emotional and peer problems in adolescents. These dynamic indicators include within-domain dynamics-

This study aimed to identify factors influencing trajectories of change in two outcome domains, frequency of substance use and quality of life (QOL), among adolescents receiving a brief evidence-based intervention. Participants were 106 adolescents, aged 13 to 21 years, who met criteria for a substance use disorder. The adolescents received a five-session intervention and completed four assessments over 12 months. Based upon a theoretical and empirical review, five putative predictors were tested: gender, age, severity of conduct disorder, severity of depression, and peer substance involvement

Justice-involved individuals with opioid use history face significant social determinants of health challenges that may influence recovery outcomes. This cross-sectional study examined the association between 24 demographic and social determinants of health variables and two outcomes: self-reported opioid use within 1 month and previous overdose. Participants (N = 255) were recently released from incarceration and enrolled in a peer-based recovery program. Bivariate analyses and exploratory logistic regression models were used to examine patterns of association. Peer meeting attendance was ass
