BACKGROUND: The risk for gastric cancer among patients with gastric atrophy is unclear. We investigated the association between the risk for gastric cancer and gastric atrophy.
METHODS: We performed a comprehensive literature search in the PubMed and Embase databases and extracted relevant data from eligible studies. A fixed- or random-effects model was applied to pool study-specific risk according to heterogeneity across studies.
RESULTS: Thirteen cohort or nested case-control studies with 655,937 participants and 2,794 patients with gastric cancer were analyzed. The pooled results suggeste

The present study was performed in order to evaluate: (1) the influence of a bicarbonate-alkaline mineral water (Uliveto) on digestive symptoms in patients with functional dyspepsia; (2) the effects of Uliveto on preclinical models of gastric functions. Selected patients complained of dyspeptic symptoms in the absence of digestive lesions or Helicobacter pylori infection within the previous 3 months. They were treated with Uliveto water (1.5 l day(-1)) for 30 days. Frequency and severity of symptoms were assessed at baseline and day 30 by a score system. Preclinical experiments were carried ou

AIM: To study the association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and autoimmune type atrophic gastritis.
METHODS: Twenty-three patients with different grades of atrophic gastritis were analysed using enzyme immunoassay-based serology, immunoblot-based serology, and histology to reveal a past or a present H. pylori infection. In addition, serum markers for gastric atrophy (pepsinogen I, pepsinogen I/II and gastrin) and autoimmunity [parietal cell antibodies (PCA), and intrinsic factor (IF), antibodies] were determined.
RESULTS: Of the 14 patients with severe gastric atrophy, as

Histomorphology of the gastric and intestinal glands was investigated in 19 sexually mature, adult guineapigs by light and transmission electron microscopy. Gastric glands exhibited the cytological characteristics of oxynticopeptic cells capable of both hydrochloric acid (HCl) and pepsinogen secretion. In the literature, occurrence of oxynticopeptic cells in the proventriculus of the domestic fowl (Toner, 1963; Bell & Freeman, 1971) and in the gastric glands of frogs has been reported (Sedar, 1961; Patt & Patt, 1969; Forte & Forte, 1970). It has been claimed by other investigators (Herriot et

Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a well-established precursor of intestinal gastric cancer, but epidemiologic data about its occurrence are sparse. We provide an overview on studies that examined the prevalence of CAG in different parts of the world. Articles containing data about the prevalence of chronic atrophic gastritis in unselected population samples and published until November 2005 were identified by searching the MEDLINE database. Furthermore, the references in the identified publications were screened for additional suitable studies. Studies comprising at least 50 subjects were i

BACKGROUND/AIM: The use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is known to lead to hypergastrinemia; however, the data in patients with atrophic gastritis is still lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of long-term PPIs use on the gastrin levels in patients with atrophic gastritis and to determine factors affecting hypergastrinemia in long-term users of PPIs.
METHODS: Serum Helicobacter pylori IgG, gastrin and pepsinogen levels were measured. Atrophic gastritis was assessed by upper gastrointestinal endoscopies based on the Kimura-Takemoto classification and pepsinogen level

BACKGROUND: The clinical manifestations of AMAG are diverse and easily overlooked. The exact diagnostic criteria for AMAG are yet to be standardized, and serological tests lack clinical practices.
METHODS: This case report demonstrates the process of searching for etiologic agents in a patient with PA.
RESULTS: Serological tests showed positive APCAs, decreased serum pepsinogen (PG)I, decreased PGI/PGII ratio, and increased serum gastrin (GAS). After supplementation with hematopoietic raw materials such as vitamin B12 and folic acid, the patient recovered well.
CONCLUSIONS: This case report

Previous findings concerning gastric atrophy as a potential risk factor for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) have been inconsistent. We aimed to test whether gastric atrophy and, further, its interaction with poor oral health elevated the risk of ESCC in a high-risk region of China. Our population-based case-control study in Taixing, China (2010-2014), recruited cases from local hospitals and the local cancer registry. Controls were selected randomly from the local population registry. Ultimately, 1,210 cases and 1,978 controls answered questionnaires and provided blood samples for as

BACKGROUND: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) for detection of Helicobacter pylori infection, using IgG antibodies, may significantly underestimate the association with gastric cancer.
AIM: To compare associations between H. pylori and cardia (CGC) and noncardia gastric cancer (NCGC) using ELISA and immunoblotting and determine the effect of atrophic gastritis on detection.
METHODS: Nested case-control study within the Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study. Helicobacter pylori antibodies were detected in subjects with CGC (n = 18), NCGC (n = 34) and controls (n = 69 and 134 respecti

Prevalence of atrophic gastritis in various population of Siberia with serological tests was studied. Representative samples of Novosibirsk adult population and also urban and rural population of Yakutia were examined. 348 persons at the age more than 45 years (180 males and 168 females) were studied. Concentration of pepsinogen I, gastrin 17 and antibodies to Helicobacter pilori in blood serum was estimated with immune-enzyme analysis ("Biohit GastroPanel", "Biohit", Finland). In addition, domestic test-systems were used for detection cytotoxic (expressing CagA-protein) strains H. pylori. Lev

We investigated the effects of stimulation of the nucleus ambiguus (NA) complex on gastroduodenal motility and gastric secretion in alpha-chloralose-anesthetized cats. Motility was measured by use of extraluminal force transducers sutured to the body, antrum, pylorus, and duodenum. Secretion was measured by determining changes in gastric pH, titratable acidity, and pepsinogen activity. Stimulation of the NA complex (right NA in 11 animals and left NA in 8 animals) elicited contractions of the antrum, pylorus, and duodenum, as well as sinus bradycardia and hypotension using stimulus parameters …

Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2013eng
BACKGROUND: Striking similarities between autoimmune gastritis and Helicobacter Pylori (H. pylori)-associated gastritis have suggested a potential link between these two pathologic conditions in the progression of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG); however, evidence has remained conflicting.
METHODS: Serum pepsinogen I and II, and antibodies against H. pylori in general, the cytotoxin-associated gene A protein (CagA) and parietal cells were measured by ELISA in 9,684 subjects aged 50 to 74 years. Antigastric parietal cell antibody (APCA) prevalence was examined in the overall population and ac

BACKGROUND: Adult patients with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus frequently also show gastric disturbances. Knowledge of the prevalence of such abnormalities in children with insulin-dependent diabetes and the predictive value of anti-gastric parietal cell antibodies in blood may be of practical importance.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 68 patients (29 boys and 39 girls), aged from 5 yr 2 mo to 19 yr 10 mo, and treated for insulin-dependent diabetes from 1 mo to 14 yr 6 mo, were included in the study. Fasting blood concentrations of gastrin (G), pepsinogen (PG1), anti-gastric parietal cell antibod

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Autoimmune gastritis (AIG) is an immune-mediated disorder characterized by corpus-predominant atrophy. While serological markers are useful for screening, they inadequately reflect the dynamic progression of mucosal atrophy. Endoscopy remains the diagnostic cornerstone, yet a systematic analysis of its features across AIG stages is lacking. This study aimed to comprehensively analyze the clinical and endoscopic characteristics of AIG and evaluate the potential of endoscopic manifestations in defining disease stages, with particular focus on the intriguingly high prevalence

AIMS: Patients with atrophic gastritis unrelated to autoimmune gastritis (AIG) and without active Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infection or previous eradication therapy are considered to have previous Helicobacter pylori infection-induced atrophic gastritis (PHIG). This study aimed to clarify the clinical characteristics of patients with PHIG.
METHODS: Consecutive patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy during the study period were enrolled in the study. Pepsinogen and gastrin levels, H. pylori serology, and endoscopic atrophic grade were assessed. Patients were divided into…
