Parahippocampal activation evoked by masked traumatic images in posttraumatic stress disorder: a functional MRI study.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been widely studied, but its neural mechanism is still unclear. The purpose of this study is to identify dysfunctional areas in PTSD throughout the whole brain to help to elucidate the neural mechanisms of PTSD. Sixteen patients with PTSD and sixteen healthy controls participated in this study. Traumatic images under perceptual threshold including scenes of earthquakes, traffic accidents, ambulances, emergency rooms, and crimes were presented to the participants, and brain activation was measured using functional MRI. Functional brain images of both gro

Differential arousal and neural engagement for angry and fearful faces: a combined pupillometric and fMRI study.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how emotions are encoded at the neural level remains a central challenge in human neuroscience. Facial expressions are among the most powerful and frequently used stimuli to study emotion processing. Face perception itself is a complex function supported by a core network-including bilateral occipito-fusiform and superior temporal regions-and an extended network involving anterior structures such as the bilateral amygdalae. However, previous findings on how emotional content modulates these networks have been inconsistent. METHODS: To disentangle perceptual and aff

Unsupervised CT Metal Artifact Reduction Via Consistent Artifact Modeling.

Metal artifacts severely corrupt CT images, masking anatomical structures and undermining diagnostic reliability. Although supervised metal artifact reduction (MAR) achieves strong suppression, its dependence on paired clean and corrupted data confines it to simulated domains and hinders clinical translation. We recast unsupervised MAR as an artifact-consistent residual learning problem and propose a physically grounded, attention-guided generative framework that closes the loop between artifact estimation and removal. A single-generator dual-branch architecture estimates metal-induced corrupt

Trypophobic images gain preferential access to early visual processes.

Trypophobia is a common but unusual phobia that is induced by viewing many clustered objects. Previous studies suggested that this trypophobia is caused by the specific power spectrum of the images; this idea has not been fully investigated empirically. In the present study, we used breaking continuous flash suppression (b-CFS) to clarify whether the trypophobic images affect access to visual awareness, and what features of trypophobic images contribute to rapid access of awareness. In the b-CFS paradigms, a dynamic masking pattern presented to one eye suppresses the target images shown to the

Brain mechanisms associated with internally directed attention and self-generated thought.

Internal cognition like imagination and prospection require sustained internally directed attention and involve self-generated thought. This fMRI study aimed to disentangle the brain mechanisms associated with attention-specific and task-specific processes during internally directed cognition. The direction of attention was manipulated by either keeping a relevant stimulus visible throughout the task, or by masking it, so that the task had to be performed "in the mind's eye". The level of self-directed thought was additionally varied between a convergent and a divergent thinking task. Internal

Modeling within- and across-channel processes in comodulation masking release.

The relative contributions of within-channel and across-channel processes to perceptual comodulation masking release (CMR) were investigated in the framework of an auditory processing model. A generalized version of the computational auditory signal processing and perception model [CASP; Jepsen et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 124, 422-438 (2008)] was used and extended by an across-channel modulation processing stage according to Piechowiak et al. [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 121, 2111-2126 (2007)]. Five experimental paradigms were considered: CMR with a broadband noise masker as a function of the masker s

Electrophysiological evidence for ventral stream deficits in schizophrenia patients.

Schizophrenic patients suffer from many deficits including visual, attentional, and cognitive ones. Visual deficits are of particular interest because they are at the fore-end of information processing and can provide clear examples of interactions between sensory, perceptual, and higher cognitive functions. Visual deficits in schizophrenic patients are often attributed to impairments in the dorsal (where) rather than the ventral (what) stream of visual processing. We used a visual-masking paradigm in which patients and matched controls discriminated small vernier offsets. We analyzed the evok

Investigation of the interaction between lactones and ketones in a Cheddar cheese matrix using Feller's additive model, σ-τ plots, U-models, and aroma addition experiments.

The objective of this study was to examine the sensory interactions between lactones and ketones in a Cheddar simulation matrix through perceptual interaction analysis. The olfactory thresholds of 6 key lactones had values ranging from 8.32 to 58.88 μg/kg, whereas those of the 4 key ketones ranged from 6.61 to 660.69 μg/kg. Both Feller's additive model and σ-τ plots demonstrated complex interactions in 24 binary mixtures composed of the 6 lactones and 4 ketones, including synergy, addition, and masking effects. Specifically, we found that 6 binary mixtures exhibited aroma synergistic effects u

Conductive hearing loss during development does not appreciably alter the sharpness of cochlear tuning.

An increasing number of studies show that listeners often have difficulty hearing in situations with background noise, despite normal tuning curves in quiet. One potential source of this difficulty could be sensorineural changes in the auditory periphery (the ear). Signal in noise detection deficits also arise in animals raised with developmental conductive hearing loss (CHL), a manipulation that induces acoustic attenuation to model how sound deprivation changes the central auditory system. This model attributes perceptual deficits to central changes by assuming that CHL does not affect senso

Auditory event-related potentials and function of the medial olivocochlear efferent system in children with auditory processing disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to investigate the function of central auditory pathways and of the medial efferent olivocochlear system (MOCS). DESIGN: Event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded following the delivery of the stimulus /da/ in quiet and in ipsilateral, contralateral, and binaural noise conditions and correlated to the results of the auditory processing disorders (APD) diagnostic test battery. MOCS function was investigated by adding ipsilateral, contralateral, and binaural noise to transient evoked otoacoustic emission recordings. Auditory brainstem responses and pure tone au

Voice Familiarization Training Improves Speech Intelligibility and Reduces Listening Effort.

Understanding speech among competing speech poses a substantial challenge. In these environments, familiar voices-including naturally familiar (e.g., friends, partners) and lab-trained voices-are more intelligible than unfamiliar voices. Yet, whether familiar voices also require less effort to understand is currently unknown. We trained 20 participants to become familiar with three voices, then tested listening effort during a speech intelligibility task. During familiarization and training, participants were exposed to three talkers for different lengths of time, either speaking 88, 166, or 4

A Subcortical Model for Auditory Forward Masking with Efferent Control of Cochlear Gain.

Previous physiological and psychophysical studies have explored whether feedback to the cochlea from the efferent system influences forward masking. The present work proposes that the limited growth-of-masking (GOM) observed in auditory nerve (AN) fibers may have been misunderstood; namely, that this limitation may be due to the influence of anesthesia on the efferent system. Building on the premise that the unanesthetized AN may exhibit GOM similar to more central nuclei, the present computational modeling study demonstrates that feedback from the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferents may cont

Role of the medial olivocochlear efferent auditory system in speech perception in noise: a systematic review and meta-analyses.

OBJECTIVE: The study investigated the relationship between the strength of the medial olivocochlear reflex (measured via contralateral inhibition of otoacoustic emissions) and speech perception in noise (obtained from behavioural identification task) through meta-analyses. DESIGN: A systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of studies investigating the relationship in neurotypical adults was performed. STUDY SAMPLE: The systematic search (in PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct and Google Scholar databases) revealed 21 eligible studies, which were critically appraised using the NIH tool f

Effect of pulse phase duration on forward masking and spread of excitation in cochlear implant listeners.

Previous cochlear implant (CI) research has shown that at a pulse train with a long pulse phase duration (PPD) requires less current but greater charge to obtain the same loudness as a pulse train with a short PPD. This might result in different excitation patterns between long and short PPDs. At equal loudness, long PPDs might produce greater masking due to greater charge. However, because they require less current, long PPDs may produce a smaller spatial spread of excitation (SOE) compared to short PPDs by evoking a greater neural firing probability within the relatively small current field.

Reliability of the Minimum Masking Level as Outcome Variable in Tinnitus Clinical Research.

Purpose The minimum masking level (MML) is the minimum intensity of a stimulus required to just totally mask the tinnitus. Treatments aimed at reducing the tinnitus itself should attempt to measure the magnitude of the tinnitus. The objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of the MML. Method Sample consisted of 59 tinnitus patients who reported stable tinnitus. We obtained MML measures on two visits, separated by about 2-3 weeks. We used two noise types: speech-shaped noise and high-frequency emphasis noise. We also investigated the relationship between the MML and tinnitus loud

Identifying neural correlates of visual consciousness with ALE meta-analyses.

Neural correlates of consciousness (NCC) have been a topic of study for nearly two decades. In functional imaging studies, several regions have been proposed to constitute possible candidates for NCC, but as of yet, no quantitative summary of the literature on NCC has been done. The question whether single (striate or extrastriate) regions or a network consisting of extrastriate areas that project directly to fronto-parietal regions are necessary and sufficient neural correlates for visual consciousness is still highly debated [e.g., Rees et al., 2002, Nat Rev. Neurosci 3, 261-270; Tong, 2003,

Robust cortical encoding of slow temporal modulations of speech.

This study investigates the neural representation of speech in complex listening environments. Subjects listened to a narrated story, masked by either another speech stream or by stationary noise. Neural recordings were made using magnetoencephalography (MEG), which can measure cortical activity synchronized to the temporal envelope of speech. When two speech streams are presented simultaneously, cortical activity is predominantly synchronized to the speech stream the listener attends to, even if the unattended, competing-speech stream is more intense (up to 8 dB). When speech is presented tog

Speech-on-speech masking with variable access to the linguistic content of the masker speech.

It has been reported that listeners can benefit from a release in masking when the masker speech is spoken in a language that differs from the target speech compared to when the target and masker speech are spoken in the same language [Freyman, R. L. et al. (1999). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 106, 3578-3588; Van Engen, K., and Bradlow, A. (2007), J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 121, 519-526]. It is unclear whether listeners benefit from this release in masking due to the lack of linguistic interference of the masker speech, from acoustic and phonetic differences between the target and masker languages, or a combi

Unmasking effects of olivocochlear efferent activation on responses of inferior colliculus neurons.

Behavioural studies suggest a role for the medial olivocochlear (MOC) system in improving detection and discrimination of signals in noise. Physiological studies in the cochlea support this notion, showing unmasking, an improvement of the dynamic range of primary auditory afferents in response to tones in noise after MOC system activation. However, little is known about unmasking effects in higher centres. We investigated the effects of MOC stimulation on the responses of neurons in the guinea pig inferior colliculus to masked tones. In 50% of neurons background noise increased the basal rate

Neural basis for priming of pop-out during visual search revealed with fMRI.

Maljkovic and Nakayama first showed that visual search efficiency can be influenced by priming effects. Even "pop-out" targets (defined by unique color) are judged quicker if they appear at the same location and/or in the same color as on the preceding trial, in an unpredictable sequence. Here, we studied the potential neural correlates of such priming in human visual search using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We found that repeating either the location or the color of a singleton target led to repetition suppression of blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) activity in brain regi
