BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, no previous study has assessed the neurosurgical publications from Africa. A bibliometric analysis was performed in the present study to evaluate the contribution of African authors in neurosurgical journals worldwide and to discuss the approaches that could be used to enhance the quantity and quality of publications on this issue.
METHODS: A literature search of neurosurgical publications by African investigators was performed using the PubMed database from 1999 to 2018. The total number of articles per country was tabulated and normalized by the num

The impact factor (IF) for 2015 was recently released and this could be the time to once again reflect on its use as a metric of a journal. Problems and concerns regarding the IF have been addressed extensively elsewhere 1 2. The principle of the IF for a given year is that it represents the average number of citations of articles published in the journal in the two previous years. While authors frequently cite the IF as a determining factor for submission, the IF does not predict how many times individual articles will be cited. In a study from a peer-reviewed cardiovascular journal, nearly ha

Receiving the National Academy of Neuropsychology's Lifetime Contributions to Neuropsychology Award promoted reflection on values and decisions. Selecting the topic of the presentation associated with the award also led to rumination. The term "lifetime" was the deciding factor: how does one choose and start a career path, what advice might one give to individuals embarking on their own career, and what goals does one set up early in one's career? What are the "drivers" in one's life? This was the topic of my presentation, and the theme of this manuscript. There were two drivers that can be tr

This review summarises all trauma and related papers published in the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (BJOMS) from January 2010 to December 2011. In total 45 articles were published, of which 42% (19) were full-length articles. These articles primarily focused on the management of mandibular condyle and orbital fractures, with several papers discussing maxillofacial surgery by the British military. There were no articles discussing midfacial fractures or massive facial trauma. The remaining papers included short communications, technical notes, and letters; and provided discu

Almost every four years a Supplement of Chest about the use of antithrombotic agents is published. The recommendations come from international experts who deal among others with the use of these drugs in case of venous thromboembolic disease, atrial fibrillation, valvular and structural heart diseases, ischemic stroke, coronary diseases and peripheral artery occlusive disease. We review some recommendations about the appropriate use of anticoagulants to prevent and treat venous thromboembolic diseases as well as the use of antiplatelet agents in case of arterial diseases.

Plastic surgeons have the appropriate knowledge and clinical experience to perform a rhinoplasty. In the past 8 years, the authors have received for consultation some patients who had already undergone more than one rhinoplasty. As this shows, the specialist must be familiarized with the surgical technique specific for each case and its respective terminology. The authors propose the use of "repetitive reconstructive rhinoplasty" in referring to all the patients who for different reasons come to the specialist for a new rhinoplasty after a minimum of three surgeries performed previously. It mu

SEARCH METHODS: For the years 1987 to 1995, the quantity and content of breast cancer articles were examined in four popular women's magazines and three magazines with a large African-American audience. Fifty-nine lead factual breast cancer articles were analyzed for the info
