Bilophila wadsworthia: a unique Gram-negative anaerobic rod.

Although comprising less than 0.01% of the normal human gastrointestinal microbiota, Bilophila wadsworthia is the third most common anaerobe recovered from clinical material obtained from patients with perforated and gangrenous appendicitis. Since its discovery in 1988, B. wadsworthia has been recovered from clinical specimens associated with a variety of infections, including sepsis, liver abscesses, cholecystitis, Fournier's gangrene, soft tissue abscesses, empyema, osteomyelitis, Bartholinitis, and hidradenitis suppurativa. In addition, it has been found in the saliva and vaginal fluids of

Trends and Economic Burden of Odontogenic Infections in Peri-Urban Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Severe odontogenic infections (OIs) are caused by dental caries, which have a sequelae of periodontal disease and periapical abscess. In clinical practice, there are sometimes sudden surges in odontogenic infections. Seasonal surges of dental emergencies have been documented with studies attributing these to public holidays when dental offices do not operate. The seasonal patterns however of OIs, be it rainy or dry season peaks of odontogenic infections, remain unexplored in the study area. The reasons behind such trends are not well understood either. METHODOLOGY: The study utili

A case report of a pyogenic liver abscess caused by Fusobacterium nucleatum in a patient with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis.

Pyogenic liver abscess (PLA) is a process with significant morbidity and mortality and is a rare complication in an aisled way in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). In addition to hepatic cyst infection, intracystic hemorrhage is another complication seen in ADPKD patients; however, the liver parenchyma itself remains normal. A PLA located in normal liver tissue in these kinds of patients has not been previously reported. Fusobacterium nucleatum is an anaerobic bacterium with rare involvement other than in periodontal infections. A 58-year-old Caucasian male, w

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography contributes to the diagnosis and management of infections in patients with multiple myeloma: a study of 165 infectious episodes.

PURPOSE: Correctly identifying infection in cancer patients can be challenging. Limited data suggest that positron emission tomography (PET) using fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) may be useful for diagnosing infection. To determine the role of FDG-PET in the diagnosis of infection in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of 248 patients who had FDG-PET performed for MM staging or infection work-up revealing increased uptake at extramedullary sites and/or bones and joints that would be atypical for MM between October 2001 and May 2004 were reviewed

Periodontal healing in humans using anorganic bovine bone and bovine peritoneum-derived collagen membrane: a clinical and histologic case report.

The authors report the clinical and histologic data on the healing of a severe periodontal lesion obtained in a one-walled intrabony defect using anorganic bovine bone under a bovine peritoneum-derived collagen membrane. Eight months after surgery, a bone-like tissue replaced the lost tissues. A biopsy of this tissue was carried out. In the part of the specimen closer to the residual bony wall of the original defect, anorganic bone particles (ABP) appeared to be surrounded by a layer of newly formed bone; its osteocyte lacunae were colonized by osteocytes from the host, and actively secreting

Oral health in prehistoric San Pedro de Atacama oases, Northern Chile.

After almost 2000 years of local development, including limited trading with neighboring ethnic groups, the societies that occupied the oases of San Pedro de Atacama, Northern Chile, became part of the trade web of the Tiwanaku empire, between 500 and 1000 CE. Archaeological evidence tends to support the idea that the period under the influence of the altiplano (high plane) empire was very affluent. Here we investigate the possibility that this affluence had a positive impact on the health status of the Atacameneans, using the oral health as an indirect indicator of quality of life. Dental dec

Nasolacrimal obstruction caused by root abscess of the upper canine in a cat.

A 10-year-old, castrated male domestic short hair cat was presented to the Small Animal Clinic at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine with a presenting complaint of chronic, ocular discharge from the left eye. Ocular examination confirmed epiphora and mucopurulent discharge but there were no apparent reasons for the ocular discharge, and nasolacrimal obstruction was suspected. The cat had swelling of the left side of the face, severe periodontal disease and a fractured upper left canine tooth with pulpal exposure. Dacryocystorhinography revealed narrowing of the nasolacrimal duct above

Wisdom teeth: mankind's future third vice-teeth?

The third molar teeth (wisdom teeth) represent the last eruption of the teeth in the human dentition. Throughout evolution, the mandible has had a tendency to decrease in size; the third molar teeth are often impacted, resulting in incomplete tooth eruption that often causes clinical pericoronitis, dental caries, and pericemental abscess. Therefore, the wisdom teeth are often extracted. Moreover, wisdom teeth are often removed for clinical orthodontic treatment. On the other hand, tooth loss due to periodontal disease, dental caries, trauma, or a variety of genetic disorders continues to affec

A Case of Hypophosphatasia Started Enzyme Replacement Therapy Since Babyhood Stage.

BACKGROUND: Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is an inherited disease caused by low activity of tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase. Dental characteristics include premature loss of primary teeth, enlarged pulp chambers, and enamel hypoplasia. Although enzyme replacement therapy with asfotase alfa was approved in 2015, there are few reports about the dental outcomes of this treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: A 1-year-old girl referred to our hospital had already lost two primary teeth at the time of her initial visit. She started enzyme replacement therapy 6 days after birth, and genetic analysis later c

Necrotizing Fasciitis Due to Prevotella denticola Infection in an Intravenous Drug User.

Intravenous drug users (IVDUs) have an increased risk for various types of local and systemic infections including necrotizing fasciitis (NF), which is a life-threatening bacterial soft tissue infection that requires a prompt diagnosis and treatment. Prevotella denticola is a part of the Prevotella species, which are obligate anaerobic, Gram-negative rods related to Bacteroides genus and often implicated in periodontal and dental disease, but have been associated with soft tissue infections and other systemic complications such as cerebral abscess and endocarditis. This case reports a 30-year-

Naso-orbicular tissue necrosis by Streptococcus parasanguis in a patient with Fanconi anemia: clinical and laboratory aspects.

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder, characterized by pancytopenia and progressive hypoplasia of the bone marrow. A 23-year-old woman with FA showed severe pancytopenia and developed an abscess on the infraorbicular region on the right side of the face that progressed to phlegmon and caused tissue necrosis of the nostrils, nasal septum, nasal fossa, and posterior orbital region. Laboratory examination showed Streptococcus parasanguis as the etiologic agent of the phlegmon. Supportive treatment was recommended due to donor incompatibility for bone marrow transplant. The i

Odontogenic orbital abscess: a case report and review of literature.

Odontogenic orbital abscess is a rare but well-documented complication of sinusitis and infections spreading from dental apical lesion. We report a case of orbital abscess with periorbital cellulitis, in a 35-year-old man with positive recent dental history of a periapical dental infection arising from the second upper left premolar spread into maxillary sinus. The patient has shown facial edema, ocular pain, ophthalmoplegia, proptosis, and initial visual symptoms. A surgical intervention to drain the abscess and a revision of the dental lesion and maxillary sinus were required. A review of li

Antibiotics in general practice.

The human race has had to endure infections for as long as it has been on earth, and has developed efficient natural defence mechanisms to combat them. Modern medicine aims to augment these natural mechanisms, to help speed up resolution of infection and decrease morbidity and mortality.

21st century endodontics. Part 1.

Root canal treatment techniques probably develop and change more frequently than any other area of dental practice and it can be hard for the busy general dental practitioner to keep up to date. The aim of this series of five papers is to give a thorough review of current teaching and practice. This will encompass the rationale of root canal treatment, guidance on the latest technical procedures for preparation and obturation of the entire root canal system, and consideration of how these principles may contribute to successful treatment. The series will address the following issues: diagnosis

Diabetic ketoacidosis secondary to dento-alveolar infection.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a medical emergency with a potentially fatal outcome if not recognized and treated appropriately. Infective processes are a common precipitant of DKA. We report two cases of dentoalveolar infections in patients with type I diabetes mellitus who presented with DKA. The management of such cases requires both specialist surgical and medical intervention.

Serious complications of endodontic infections: some cautionary tales.

While endodontic (dentoalveolar) abscesses can cause significant morbidity, in susceptible individuals they can pose life-threatening problems. This paper provides an overview of the more serious sequelae of endodontic abscesses, and provides examples of 'high risk' situations in practice in which these serious complications are more likely to occur.
