Two-year follow-up of a patient with oligodontia treated with implant- and tooth-supported fixed partial dentures: a case report.

Dental implants have become an accepted treatment modality for aging patients with either completely or partially edentulous arches. However, growing patients with congenitally missing primary and/or permanent teeth often need dental implant treatment, even before puberty, for optimum functional and/or psychosocial development. From a developmental perspective, dental implants cannot accompany the physiologic differentiation of the alveolar bone because of the difference in anchorage between an osseointegrated dental implant and a tooth in bone. Nevertheless, reports in the literature suggest

Peri-implant soft tissue health and denture base adaptation of CAD/CAM milled versus 3D-printed implant-assisted mandibular overdentures: one-year randomized clinical trial.

This study aimed to compare denture base adaptation and peri-implant soft tissue health between CAD/CAM milled and 3D-printed mandibular implant-assisted overdentures. Twenty-four completely edentulous patients were enrolled and randomly allocated to two groups. After two dropouts, twenty-two patients completed the trial (11 per group). All patients received two implants in the mandibular canine region with ball attachments. The intervention group received a CAD/CAM milled mandibular overdenture, while the control group received a 3D-printed mandibular overdenture; both groups received a conve

Modified Neumann incision for implant placement in overdentures: Case series of a less invasive alternative.

BACKGROUND: Conventional envelope flap techniques for implant placement in edentulous mandibles are associated with greater postoperative morbidity, especially in elderly patients or those with anatomical limitations. Minimally invasive alternatives aim to preserve soft tissues and reduce complications, enhancing clinical predictability. METHODS: A clinical study was conducted with ten fully edentulous patients, in whom 20 regular implants were placed in the interforaminal region without surgical guides. A modified Neumann incision with a mesial relaxing cut and partial-thickness "L"-shaped f

The maxillary sinus: challenges and treatments for implant placement.

Standard implant placement in the posterior maxilla is often limited by the lack of vertical bone height due to the pneumatization of the sinus cavity. Several techniques have been developed to enter this cavity and elevate the membrane to enable implant placement. These methods may involve the use of bone grafts and membranes, as well as concurrent implant placement. This article reviews the clinical situations in which to apply these sinus lift techniques, complications, and success rates.

Multidisciplinary management of advanced occlusal periodontitis: genioplasty for autogenous block bone grafts.

Step-by-step sequencing is essential in the treatment of generalized advanced periodontitis. Mutilated skeletodental malocclusion, muscle imbalance, and loss of dentoalveolar ridges are major complicating factors. The need for osseous ridge augmentation provided an opportunity to address the patient's facial imbalance. Concomitantly, genioplasty camouflaged the vertical facial excess and deficient chin. At the outset, a prosthetic commitment was essential.

Interaction between osteoblast and osteoclast: impact in bone disease.

The intercellular communication between osteoblasts and osteoclasts is crucial to bone homeostasis. Since Rodan and Martin proposed the control of osteoclasts by osteoblasts in the 1980s, many factors have been isolated from osteoblasts and shown to regulate the differentiation and function of osteoclasts. However, the mechanism by which osteoblasts regulate osteoclasts during bone remodelling is still unclear. On the other hand, it is well accepted that many metabolic bone diseases are associated with the disruption of the communication between osteoblast and osteoclasts. Thus, this review fo

Ailing and failing endosseous dental implants: a literature review.

Although the overall success rate of implant dentistry is very high, dental implants occasionally fail. It is essential for the clinician to recognize unhealthy implants and to determine whether they are ailing, failing, or failed prior to beginning any salvage efforts. Ailing and failing implants are amenable to therapy. Implants diagnosed as failed should be removed. This review provides the reader with information on non-surgical and surgical therapies available for managing ailing and failing implants. Undoubtedly, the best steps to avoid encountering ailing or failing implants involve pro

Oral disease burden in patients undergoing prosthetic heart valve implantation.

BACKGROUND: Valvular heart disease predisposing to endocarditis and requiring prosthetic valve implantation is common among the elderly. Spontaneous bacteremias associated with acute or chronic oral/odontogenic infections may represent a far greater cumulative risk for the development of endocarditis than do occasional health care procedures administered in a professional setting. METHODS: To determine the oral disease burden in patients undergoing mechanical or bioprosthetic heart valve implantation, we performed a comprehensive clinical and radiographic regional examination on 156 consecuti

Aesthetic and prosthetic principles for single tooth implant procedures: an overview.

Loss of anterior maxillary teeth always results in bone resorption and loss of interdental papillae, making a single tooth replacement by an implant very difficult. When infections have been present and previous surgery at the apex of the root has taken place, bone destruction is substantial, increasing the resorption defect and aesthetic and prosthetic problems. The learning objective of this article is to describe the steps necessary for implant surgery and prosthetics. It includes bone regeneration procedures, implant placement, second stage surgery, reconstruction of interdental papillae,

Overdentures with roots or implants for elderly patients: a comparison.

Roots maintained under the denture base preserve the alveolar ridge, provide sensory feedback and improve the stability of the dentures. Furthermore, with the use of copings and precision attachments, retention of the denture is provided. Overdentures are a favored treatment modality for elderly patients with few remaining teeth because adaptation to wearing dentures is facilitated. Recently, overdenture treatment with the use of implants has become popular for edentulous elderly patients who are maladaptive to complete dentures. Although the biologic basis of implants installed in the bone is

Implantation of a bone-anchored annular closure device in conjunction with tubular minimally invasive discectomy for lumbar disc herniation: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive techniques for lumbar discectomy have been recommended as superior to open techniques due to lower blood loss, lower rates of infection and shorter recovery. There are, however, concerns that this approach does not sufficiently remove the herniated nuclear material, thus leaving the patient susceptible to reherniation requiring reoperation. The purpose of this study was to examine the safety and viability of an annular closure device in limiting reherniation and reoperation in a cohort of patients undergoing minimally invasive lumbar discectomy with the assistanc

Esthetic reconstruction of a localized severely resorbed anterior maxilla associated with peri-implantitis: A clinical report.

This clinical report described the esthetic reconstruction of a localized severely resorbed right anterior maxilla associated with peri-implantitis. For vertical bone augmentation, guided bone regeneration surgery was performed by raising a flap with the remote incision technique, followed by soft tissue grafting and vestibuloplasty. The biologically oriented preparation technique was used to improve the health and stability of the peri-implant tissues. The surgical treatment and a novel method of prosthetic rehabilitation provided excellent esthetic and functional outcomes.

Histological analysis of the Ankylos peri-implant soft tissues in a dog model.

PURPOSE: The importance of the soft tissue-implant interface is enhanced by the presence of a microgap between the implant and the abutment, which represents a contamination site for bacteria. The aim of this study was to investigate the interface between the Ankylos gap-free implant system and the surrounding soft tissues in a dog model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six Labrador dogs were included in the study and two Ankylos implants were inserted per dog. The dogs were killed 6 months after abutment placement without functional loading and without plaque control. The implants were analysed histo
