OBJECT: Previously the authors demonstrated that peroneal and tibial intraneural ganglia arising from the superior tibiofibular joint may occasionally extend proximally within the epineurium to reach the sciatic nerve. The dynamic nature of these cysts, dependent on intraarticular pressures, may give rise to differing clinical and imaging presentations that have remained unexplained until now. To identify the pathogenesis of these unusual cysts and to correlate their atypical magnetic resonance (MR) imaging appearance, the authors retrospectively reviewed their own experience as well as the pu

A 60-year-old man developed two selective peripheral mononeuropathies of the peroneal and later the radial nerve, shortly after a diagnosis of large-cell lung carcinoma. Nerve conduction studies and electromyography confirmed isolated lesions in both nerves, and in the case of the peroneal nerve lesion, focal conduction block was localised to the level of the fibula neck. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging of the lower limb excluded focal compression or malignant infiltration along the course of the peroneal nerve, and there was no signal change within the nerve, prompting a diagnosis of pa

BACKGROUND: Dysfunction of the nervous system is well-known in diabetes and among patients with prediabetes, obesity, and hypertension. However, there is only a limited amount of data available on the changes in neuronal function in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOs), even though this condition is also accompanied by metabolic and vascular abnormalities. The aim of our study was to assess the cardiovascular autonomic and peripheral sensory function in patients with PCOs.
METHODS: The study involved 27 women with PCOs, and 24 healthy women as control subjects. Autonomic neuropathy (AN) was asses

OBJECTIVE: To examine muscle membrane properties in neurogenic muscles using Muscle Velocity Recovery Cycles (MVRCs).
METHODS: Forty-seven patients referred to Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and Electromyography (EMG) for peroneal nerve entrapment neuropathy were prospectively included. The patients were categorized as peroneal nerve entrapment neuropathy across knee (n = 22), L5-radiculapathy (n = 10), normal NCS/EMG (n = 9) and other disorders (n = 6) using NCS/EMG and neuroimaging results. Strength in anterior tibial muscle was measured by Medical Council Scale (MRC) and disease duration w

Brucellosis is a common infectious disease in Mediterranean countries. We evaluated the peripheral nerve involvement in patients with brucellosis. Thirty-eight patients with brucellosis were examined. Four of them were excluded because of B(12) deficiency and diabetes mellitus. Thirty-four patients were included. The average age was 43.08 +/- 15.3 years. Patients were divided into two groups according to the abnormality in their peripheral nervous system (PNS) examination. All patients underwent nerve conduction and needle electromyography EMG studies. Twenty normal healthy subjects were used

BACKGROUND: Malakoplakia is a rare condition characterized by inflammatory masses with specific histological characteristics. These soft tissue masses can mimic tumors and tend to develop in association with chronic or recurrent infections, typically of the urinary tract. A specific defect in innate immunity has been described. In the absence of randomized controlled trials, management is based on an understanding of the biology and on case reports.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we describe a case of presacral malakoplakia in a British Indian woman in her late 30s, presenting with complex unilatera

We report the case of a 40-year-old woman, with endometriosis, who presented with a history of foot drop and cyclic sensory disturbance of the right lower limb. She was initially diagnosed with lumbar disc herniation. Neurological examination revealed muscle weakness and sensory disturbance associated with the right sciatic nerve. Nerve conduction studies revealed a low amplitude sensory nerve action potential in the right superficial fibular and sural nerves. Pelvic magnetic resonance imaging revealed an endometriotic cyst in the right ovary, and an endometriotic lesion extending from the rig

Impaired mobility is common in people with multiple sclerosis (MS). Changes in gait have different causes and require individualised gait rehabilitation. A common and often early cause of mobility impairment is footdrop, inability to lift the foot during the swing phase of gait, with increased risk of falls, effortful walking and fatigue. Using literature review, we have characterised published data on footdrop treatment in MS, specifically functional electrical stimulation (FES) to better understand the reported outcomes relevant to the user. We discuss the strengths and weaknesses of FES and

The present case report describes the workup of unilateral fibular-nerve-paresis in a female neonatal Fleckvieh calf. The calf was admitted to the Clinic for Ruminants with Ambulatory and Herd Health Services, Ludwig- Maximilians-University Munich as part of an investigation into a herd problem. The herd problem was presented as movement disorder in neonatal calves with an incidence of 10%. A physical, hematological, and musculoskeletal, as well as neurological examination was performed, and a diagnosis of a left-sided paresis of the fibular-nerve (N. fibularis) was made. Further special exami

"Drop foot" palsy attributed to the prolonged and repetitive maintenance of the crossed-leg posture has been occasionally reported. We report, to the best of our knowledge, the first case of magnetic resonance imaging evidence of peroneal nerve abnormalities related to right drop-foot palsy in a tall healthy subject with habit of prolonged daily leg crossing.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic autonomic neuropathy (DAN) is a prevalent yet often overlooked complication of diabetes mellitus (DM), impacting multiple organs and substantially elevating the risk of morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of yoga-based intervention (YBI) compared to the American Diabetes Association exercise regimen (ADA Ex. Regime) and standard care for treating autonomic neuropathy in type 2 DM.
METHODS: This open-label exploratory clinical trial featured two parallel study arms: Group A (Intervention), which received YBI alongside standard care, and

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Lower extremity neuropathies from prolonged lithotomy positioning have been well documented. When we initiated our robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) program in December 2002, we chose to use the split-leg table that allows patient support in a more anatomic position, hypothesizing that this would reduce risk of neurologic compression injuries. We report our incidence of lower extremity neuropathies associated with RALP using split-leg positioning and review patient and surgical variables associated with this complication.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrosp

Common peroneal nerve (CPN) injury is an uncommon complication associated with skeletal traction. Neurological deficits occurring after removal of upper tibial pin traction (UTPT) are exceedingly rare and sparsely reported in the literature. A 27-year-old male sustained a closed left subtrochanteric femur fracture following a road traffic accident. Preoperative UTPT was applied with no immediate neurological deficit. UTPT was removed intraoperatively before definitive fixation. Postoperatively, the patient developed left-sided foot drop. Electromyography and nerve conduction velocity studies a

INTRODUCTION: Peroneal nerve palsy due to compression by an intraneural ganglion is an uncommon entity in the pediatric setting with a need for surgical treatment. Uniquely in this case, the ganglion presented as an elongated instead of a typical round cyst, delaying diagnosis and treatment.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 13 ½ year old boy with increasing peroneal nerve palsy due to an atypically shaped intraneural ganglion. An MRI of the knee revealed an elongated peroneal ganglion compressing the nerve between the lateral insertion of the gastrocnemius muscle and fibular head o

Postprocedural peroneal nerve palsy after endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) for varicose veins is rare and is associated with poor functional recovery. There have been no reports using tibial nerve transfer for iatrogenic peroneal nerve palsy after EVLA. Herein, we present a case with peroneal nerve injury after EVLA, which was successfully treated by partial tibial nerve transfer for the first time. A 75-year-old female presented with a right foot drop immediately after EVLA of the lesser saphenous vein. The ankle and toe dorsiflexion had a muscle grade of M0 on the British Medical Research Co

Foot-drop is one of the most diagnosed and physically limiting symptoms persons with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) experience. Clinicians prescribe ankle-foot orthosis (AFO) and functional electrical stimulation (FES) devices to help alleviate the effects of foot drop, but it is unclear how their clinical and functional gait improvements compare given the user's level of disability, type of multiple sclerosis, walking environment, or desired physical activity. The research questions explored were what is the current state of AFO and FES research for pwMS? What are the prevailing research trends? W

Peripheral nerve entrapments are a relatively rare and heterogeneous group of nerve disorders encompassing a wide variety of etiologies and clinical presentations. These conditions can present significant diagnostic challenges, owing to both the variety of symptoms these patients display, along with the anatomic variation that exists between individuals. Precise knowledge of the anatomic course, the common motor and sensory distributions of each of the peripheral nerves, and judicious use of imaging or electrodiagnostic testing can greatly assist in arriving at a correct diagnosis. In this art

OBJECTIVE: Although it is important to have strong predictors of outcome in peripheral mononeuropathies so that appropriate management can be instituted early, little is known about the prognostic value of electrodiagnostic results for these lesions. Our objective in this study was to evaluate the prognostic value of electrodiagnostic studies in fibular neuropathy.
DESIGN: In this retrospective study, 39 of 138 subjects with fibular neuropathy met the inclusion criteria. Electrodiagnostic results at the time of testing were evaluated for their value in predicting outcome. Good outcome was def
