Use of item response theory to develop a return to work measure for acquired brain injury: The employment feasibility checklist.

BACKGROUND: The 2001 Feasibility Evaluation Checklist (FEC) is an assessment of work readiness for individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI). It establishes the integrity of basic safety, productivity, and interpersonal factors in neurorehabilitation and vocational settings. This study represents an effort to further develop the FEC to increase its clinical utility. OBJECTIVE: To redesign the FEC by conducting Item Response Theory (IRT) analyses on the study's results and combining those mathematical calibrations with clinical expert judgement. The result will be a new measure for use in c

Confidence in the therapist and confidence in the treatment predict symptomatic improvement week by week in therapy: A latent curve modeling approach.

Previous research suggests that common relationship factors are composed of two overarching factors, "Confidence in the therapist" and "Confidence in the treatment." The aim of this naturalistic process-outcome study was to investigate the reciprocal relationships between these two constructs and patients' symptom level across treatment. The sample consisted of 587 patients who were admitted to an inpatient program and treated with psychotherapy for a range of mental health disorders, such as chronic depression, anxiety disorders, and eating disorders. Our data consisted of weekly measures of

Osteoporosis and risk of fracture: reference class problems are real.

Elselijn Kingma argues that Christopher Boorse's biostatistical theory does not show how the reference classes it uses-namely, age groups of a sex of a species-are objective and naturalistic. Boorse has replied that this objection is of no concern, because there are no examples of clinicians' choosing to use reference classes other than the ones he suggests. Boorse argues that clinicians use the reference classes they do because these reflect the natural classes of organisms to which their patients belong. Drawing on a thorough exploration of how the disease osteoporosis is defined in adults,

Symbiosis or Sporting Tool? Competition and the Horse-Rider Relationship in Elite Equestrian Sports.

The horse-rider relationship is fundamental to ethical equestrianism wherein equine health and welfare are prioritized as core dimensions of sporting success. Equestrianism represents a unique and important form of interspecies activity in which relationships are commonly idealized as central to sporting performance but have been largely unexplored in the sport psychology literature. Horse-rider relationships warrant particular consideration in the elite sporting context, given the tension between constructions of "partnership" between horse and rider, and the pragmatic pressures of elite spor

Urica-VV Scale: A New Research Perspective of The Stage of Readiness for Treatment in Patients with Dysphonia.

OBJECTIVE: To obtain evidence of validity for the URICA-V scale and estimate the psychometric properties of its items based on item response theory (IRT). METHOD: A total of 658 individuals of both sexes over 18 years of age were allocated into two groups: with dysphonia group (WDG) and vocally healthy group (VHG). A digital database was constructed with personal and professional data and item-by-item responses on the URICA-V scale. Subsequently, Cronbach's alpha, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), application of IRT using Samejima's model and ROC curve ana

A survey of physician beliefs and self-reported practices concerning screening for early detection of cancer.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. Early detection of cancer greatly improves 5-year survival for many sites, and in 1980 the American Cancer Society (ACS) published recommendations for performing cancer screening with the goal of promoting early cancer detection in asymptomatic persons. This cross-sectional survey examined beliefs and practices related to six cancer screening tests and procedures in a group of 68 primary care physicians in a multi-specialty group practice in Houston, Texas. Constructs from the Health Belief Model and Social Cognitive Theory were

Exploring motivational and contextual factors influencing medical career choice: a theory-informed study.

BACKGROUND: Career choice in medicine represents a multidimensional decision influenced by motivational, emotional, and sociocultural dynamics. Understanding how these factors interact is essential for developing educational environments that nurture sustained professional commitment. Drawing on the Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and the Expectancy-Value Theory (EVT), this study explored how self-efficacy beliefs, outcome expectations, task values, and contextual supports shape medical career motivation among first-year medical students. METHODS: A cross-sectional quantitative design w

Deimplementation in the provision of opioid agonist treatment to achieve equity of care for people engaged in treatment: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Deimplementation, the removal or reduction of potentially hazardous approaches to care, is key to progressing social equity in health. While the benefits of opioid agonist treatment (OAT) are well-evidenced, wide variability in the provision of treatment attenuates positive outcomes. During the COVID-19 pandemic, OAT services deimplemented aspects of provision which had long been central to treatment in Australia; supervised dosing, urine drug screening, and frequent in-person attendance for review. This analysis explored how providers considered social inequity in health of patien

A Predictive Model for Midwives' Compassion Fatigue Based on Stress Process Theory: Implications for Psychological Support and Human Resource Management.

BACKGROUND: Compassion fatigue among midwives is prevalent and poses significant risks, adversely affecting both their personal well-being and the quality of maternal and infant care. However, a tailored, practical tool for predicting compassion fatigue risk in this population is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To analyze factors influencing compassion fatigue in midwives, construct a predictive model for compassion fatigue risk, and provide evidence-based strategies for prevention. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 209 midwives from 29 public hospitals in western China were enrolled via convenien

AI-driven adaptive training for utility employees: a three-wave cluster-randomized field experiment on cognitive-load and personalization-fit pathways.

Evidence that AI-driven adaptive learning outperforms uniform instruction comes almost entirely from student samples in educational settings; whether, why, and for whom it works in real-world workplace training remains largely untested. We conducted a three-wave, matched-pair, cluster-randomized field experiment across six county-level power supply companies of a Chinese provincial electric power utility. Employees (N = 3,000 invited; analysis sample N = 2,574) received either knowledge-graph-driven adaptive training or traditional uniform training covering the same syllabus. Training batches

[The relationship between forgivingness, mental health and psychotherapy].

Forgivingness occupies a prominent place in religions as well as in various philosophical systems of ethics and can be defined as the free, personal distancing from feelings of rage and resentment toward a person or persons having committed an injustice. The main psychological function of forgiveness consists in allowing for the replacement of negative emotions by positive ones, such as generosity, goodness, compassion, empathy, or even love toward the offender. It must be emphasized that forgiveness is independent from reconciliation, and it is not simply a form of tolerance, justification, o

Mental health nurses' measured attitudes to people and practice: Systematic review of UK empirical research 2000-2019.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: Many studies have investigated the attitudes of mental health nurses towards a range of targets. These targets are person-oriented (for example groups of people with a similar mental health diagnosis) or practice-oriented (for example practices such as seclusion or restraint). It is thought that attitudes contribute to the practice of mental health nurses because research suggests attitudes have a role in shaping behaviour. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: To date, research about mental health nurses' attitudes has examined different attitudes in isola

Implementing polygenic risk-based breast cancer screening across European health systems: insights from the BRIGHT project.

INTRODUCTION: Polygenic risk scores (PRS) offer a novel means of stratifying breast cancer risk, with the potential to personalize screening protocols and measures, and thus improve early detection. However, their implementation in real-world settings remains poorly understood. This study, as part of the BRIGHT project, investigates how PRS-based breast cancer screening is being piloted, adapted, and resisted across five European countries, Estonia, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and France, drawing on a combination of implementation science and business model theory. METHODS: We employed a multipl

Engineering covalent organic frameworks for tailored encapsulation and controlled release of fragrances.

The inherent volatility of fragrances leads to rapid fading, poor stability, low availability, potential health, and environmental issues, necessitating the development of effective fragrance carriers for stable storage and controllable release. Herein, we presented a strategy for finely tuning the encapsulation and release profiles of fragrant molecules through engineering the pore surface properties of covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Three imine-based COFs with variable functional groups (TAPB-DHTP-COF, TAPB-DMTP-COF, and TAPB-DVA-COF) were rationally designed and constructed via solvent

Digital storytelling across the life course: Protocol for a theory-based analysis.

BACKGROUND: Digital storytelling (DST) combines first-person narratives with images, sound, and video to convey health experiences, empower under-represented voices, and foster empathy. Insight into how digital stories portray life-course influences remains scarce. Guided by the Life Course Health Development (LCHD) framework, this study protocol describes a planned theory-based analysis of 105 publicly available digital story videos from Alberta Health Services (AHS). We aim to (1) map representations of cumulative exposures, critical periods, and transitions across stories spanning childhood
