General personality dimensions, impairment and treatment response in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

General personality dimensions are associated with clinical severity and treatment response in individuals with depression and many anxiety disorders, but little is known about these relationships in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Individuals in the current study included 705 adults with OCD who had participated in family and genetic studies of the disorder. Participants self-completed the Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness Personality Inventory or Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness Five-Factor Inventory-3. Relationships between personality scores, and subjective impai…

Clinical syndromes, personality disorders, and neurocognitive differences in male and female inmates.

This study examined clinical syndromes, personality disorders, and neurocognitive problems in adult male (n = 523) and female inmates (n = 523) and a sample of unincarcerated adult women (n = 523). Inmates were administered the Coolidge Correctional Inventory (CCI), and the unincarcerated sample was given an identical test, the Coolidge Axis II Inventory. Although there were significant differences between the two inmate groups on a majority of the 32 CCI scales, only two scales achieved a medium effect size. The two inmate groups were found to be highly similar in a comparison of ranked perso

Regional cerebral brain metabolism correlates of neuroticism and extraversion.

Factor-analytic approaches to human personality have consistently identified several core personality traits, such as Extraversion/Introversion, Neuroticism, Agreeableness, Consciousness, and Openness. There is an increasing recognition that certain personality traits may render individuals vulnerable to psychiatric disorders, including anxiety disorders and depression. Our purpose in this study was to explore correlates between the personality dimensions neuroticism and extraversion as assessed by the NEO Five-Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) and resting regional cerebral glucose metabolism (rCMRgl

The borderline personality organization in a dimensional perspective: the TCI and SWAP-200 in comparison.

AIM: The categorical assessment of personality disorders, in particular of the borderline personality disorder is being debated by most authors. This study focuses on the structural organization of personality, namely on Kernberg's borderline personality organization (BPO). It aims to explore the dimensional personality assessment and to test the convergence on this construct of two dimensional instruments: the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the Shedler-Westen Assessment Procedure (SWAP-200). METHODS: BPO was assessed with the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the S

Why do people with eating disorders drop out from inpatient treatment?: the role of personality factors.

Dropout rates from inpatient treatment for eating disorders are very high and have a negative impact on outcome. The purpose of this study was to identify personality factors predictive of dropout from hospitalization. A total of 64 adult patients with anorexia nervosa consecutively hospitalized in a specialized unit were included; 19 patients dropped out. The dropout group and the completer group were compared for demographic variables, clinical features, personality dimensions, and personality disorders. There was no link between clinical features and dropout, and among demographic variables

[Polyarthritis patients with and without detected rheumatoid factor: a comparison of the psychological personality].

The study examined again the question whether the presence of rheumatoid factor in rheumatoid arthritis (rh.A.) patients has a bearing on their personality scores. For this purpose 20 seropositive rh.A. patients were compared by means of the FPI-R (Freiburg Personality Inventory) with 20 rh.A. patients in whom the rheumatoid factor was absent. Groups were matched for sex and age; severity and duration of disease were taken into account as covariates. The covariates showed significant correlations with some personality variables. Diagnostic subgroups, however, did not differ in any of the FPI s…

Personality tests in Ménière's disorder.

The personality of patients with Ménière's disorder has been evaluated using the Eysenck Personality Inventory and the Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire. The most notable finding was an elevated obsessionality score in the patients with Ménière's disorder as compared with other groups. There was no significant difference between the personality of subgroups of patients complying with rigid definitions of Ménière's disorder and those complying with a more liberal definition. The results of most scales decreased with increasing severity of the disorder, although the obsessionality scores do not f…

Narcissism and hostility.

The recent work of Hart and Joubert (1996) who reported correlations between scores on narcissism and hostility is commented upon with respect to expressions of hostility in narcissistic persons. Characteristics of the narcissistic personality observed in psychotherapy are noted, and suggestions are made regarding Hart and Joubert's call for research comparing the personality dimensions of hostile and nonhostile narcissistic persons.
