Blood-injection-injury (BII) phobia patients sometimes faint during exposure to relevant stimuli. However, mechanisms and timing of physiological adjustments in BII phobia remain poorly understood. In a larger sample of 60 patients and 20 controls, we sought to replicate findings of a prior study demonstrating the role of hyperventilation in the phobic response. We also investigated the timing of respiratory adjustment across an extended exposure recovery period. In addition, because intense disgust is commonly reported by patients, responses to surgery films were compared to a pure disgust fi

There has been a recent surge of interest in the subject of anxiety in patients with Parkinson's disease. Up to 40% of patients with Parkinson's disease experience clinically significant anxiety. This anxiety may be a psychological reaction to the stress of the illness or may be related to the neurochemical changes of the disease itself. Antiparkinsonian drugs may have a role in the pathogenesis of the anxiety. The anxiety disorders in Parkinson's disease patients appear to be clustered in the panic disorder, phobic disorder, and generalised anxiety disorder areas. The degree of comorbidity be

The Ekbom syndrome, also known as delusion of parasitosis or acarophobia is an obsessive phobic state in which the patient thinks, imagines or believes that his or her skin is infested by parasites. In the hallucinatory state, he/she removes parts of the skin, identifying them as parasites. It can be primary or secondary to other organic or psychiatric diseases. Generally speaking these patients take a long time to seek for medical support and the dermatologist is almost always the first physician to see them. Here we describe three patients with delusional parasitosis associated with organic

Sixty patients with dysthymic states which had emerged in later age of 60-80 years were examined. Two clinical types of dysthymic states were described: anergic (20 patients) and hypothymic (40 patients). Different comorbid mental disorders--obsessive-phobic (14 cases), somatoform (10), personality deviations (20) and psycho-organic (7)--were found to be characteristic of late-onset dysthymic states. According to developmental features, late dysthymia was primary (first manifested in the elderly) and secondary (develops after several depressive episodes). In diagnostic terms, the former is con

Aviophobia, the fear of flying, is a prevalent type of situational-specific phobia categorized under anxiety disorders in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5). Patients with aviophobia experience intense, irrational fear when traveling by air. Active avoidance of the phobic stimulus is a diagnostic feature that affects one's quality of life and commonly leads to significant functional limitations. Virtual reality based gradual exposure therapy is a treatment option for aviophobia due to its easy accessibility and low cost, but it may not be very effe

This study examined the physiological response (skin conductance and heart rate [HR]) of youth exposed to a mildly phobic stimulus (video of a large dog) and its relation to child- and parent-reported anxiety symptoms and cognitive bias in a community-recruited sample of youth (n = 49). The results of this study indicated that HR and skin-conductance response were associated with youth report but not parent report of their child's symptoms of anxiety disorders and that HR response was more strongly associated with anxiety symptoms than skin-conductance response. Physiological response was uniq

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a newly defined diagnostic syndrome that unifies key features of chronic subjective dizziness, phobic postural vertigo and related disorders. It describes a common chronic dysfunction of the vestibular system and brain that produces persistent dizziness, non-spinning vertigo and/or unsteadiness. The disorder constitutes a long-term maladaptation to a neuro-otological, medical or psychological event that triggered vestibular symptoms, and is usefully considered within the spectrum of other functional neurological disorders. While diagnostic tes

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the combined test-retest and interrater reliability of different psychiatric lifetime diagnoses … with good reliability in a family study setting with the use of these instruments. The diagnoses of phobic disorders, neurasthenia, RBD, subthreshold RBD and psychiatric caseness as indicated by GHQ-12 scores were less reliable in this setting and are therefore less suitable for use in family studies.

Clomipramine and imipramine treatments were compared in a sample of 152 panic disorders. Diagnosis was according to the positive criteria of DSM-III-R, but without exclusion of comorbid affective or personality disorders. The 2-year design provides non-blind treatment under typical clinical practice conditions, and it includes random assignment, periodic assessment with standardized measures, and comparable, flexible drug dosages. Findings on six outcome measures in the first 59 cases to complete 10 weeks showed both tricyclics to be markedly and equally effective for blocking panic attacks, a

Seventy-four male veterans entering an alcohol abuse treatment program were screened for additional psychiatric diagnoses using the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). Fifty-four of these also completed a questionnaire on personal and family drinking history. Over half (54.1%) had another diagnosis. The most common syndromes other than substance abuse were antisocial personality disorder, phobic disorder, and depression. In each of these cases, the presence of the additional disorder accelerated the course of the alcohol problem significantly. The difference in course between syndromes was dw

Patients with panic disorder (N = 11) and age- and sex-matched normal control subjects (N = 11) were challenged with human growth hormone-releasing factor (GH-RF) (1 microgram/kg i.v.) or placebo in random order. The control subjects had significantly increased plasma growth hormone (GH) levels after GH-RF infusion whereas panic disorder patients did not. At 15 and 30 minutes after GH-RF infusion, GH concentrations were significantly higher in the control subjects than in the patients. These findings with GH-RF extend findings from earlier reports that patients with panic disorder show blunted

The report contains data concerning clinical studies of a new Soviet tranquilizer of benzodiazepine derivative--phenazepam. Treatment of 100 patients gave a good therapeutical effect in 82%. The best results were attained in the treatment of generalized hystero-neurotical states, somewhat less in the group of neurotic states with a prevalence of affective disorders and the less effective in the obsessive-phobic syndrome. On the basis of comparative studies, the conclusion is made that phenazepam is not worse by its psychotropic activity than ativan (lorazepam) and exceeds diazepam (seduxen), m

Social phobia is individualized in international classifications only since 1980 with the DSM III, ten years after the publication by Marks of its phobic disorders classification. Nevertheless, many european authors, psychiatrists or psychologists, have raised the question of social anxiety as far back as the eighteenth century, with various points of view and appellations. The first report of an ereutophobia observation is due to Casper, in 1846, which described a serious social anxiety affecting a young man. Ereutophobia has been especially studied by Pitres and Regis, in 1807 and 1902, and …
