Janus MoXY (X/Y = S, Se, Te) monolayers for photocatalytic water splitting: Performance investigation and regulation via first-principles and nonadiabatic molecular dynamics.

In this study, taking MoXY (X/Y = S, Se, Te) monolayers as an example, we systematically investigate the regulatory role of the polarization induced by elemental variation in the properties of low-dimensional materials, using first-principles calculations combined with nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations. The polarization can significantly affect the band edge positions and photocatalytic performance of asymmetric MoXY and effectively lower the reaction energy barriers, thus facilitating photocatalytic water-splitting. In terms of NAMD, this polarization can alter nonadiabatic c

Computational Insight into the Physical Properties of Bulk MP (M = Li, Na, K) for Energy Applications.

In this study, we applied density functional theory to compute the electronic, optical, and thermal properties of MP (M = Li, Na, K). We find that the materials under consideration are stable, owing to the lack of negative frequencies in the phonon spectra. LiP exhibits an indirect band gap of 1.43 eV. NaP and KP have direct band gaps of 1.67 and 1.76 eV, respectively. The family of these composites shows strong absorption, observed by their very sharp absorption edges and confirmed by their direct transition from the valence to conduction band. They exhibit strong absorption below 4.0 eV in t

A Highly Stable Yttrium Organic Framework as a Host for Optical Thermometry and D2 O Detection.

The yttrium organic framework (Y0.89 Tb0.10 Eu0.01 )6 (BDC)7 (OH)4 (H2 O)4 (BDC=benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) is hydrothermally stable up to at least 513 K and thermally stable in air in excess of 673 K. The relative intensities of luminescence of Tb3+ and Eu3+ are governed by Tb3+ -to-Eu3+ phonon-assisted energy transfer and Tb3+ -to-ligand back transfer and are responsible for the differing temperature-dependent luminescence of the two ions. This provides a ratiometric luminescent thermometer in the 288-573 K temperature range, not previously seen for MOF materials, with a high sensitivity, 1.6

A dual-mode immunosensing strategy for prostate specific antigen detection: Integration of resonance Raman scattering and photoluminescence properties of ZnS:Mn2+ nanoprobes.

Luminescence-based methods are widely used for the detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA), for example during the diagnosis of prostate cancer. However, the accuracy of these methods is sub-optimal. The aim of this study was to develop an accurate and sensitive dual-mode immunosensing technique using a combination of resonance Raman scattering (RRS) and photoluminescence (PL) signals for the detection of PSA. A ZnS:Mn2+ nanoprobe was used as the signal reporter, which exhibits both multi-phonon RRS and PL properties. The RRS signal intensity at 348 cm-1 and the PL signal intensity at 590

The thermodynamic stability and mechanical properties of TiCxN1-x(0⩽x⩽ 1) compounds by cluster expansion method and first-principles calculations.

The thermodynamic stability and mechanical properties of titanium carbonitrides TiCxN1-x(0 ⩽x⩽ 1) are investigated by a combination of the universal cluster expansion method and the first-principles calculations. By considering the ordering of the N/C distributions on the anion sublattice sites of TiCxN1-x, a binary diagram of the heat of formation is constructed, and seven kinds of ground-state structures are predicted in the whole range of 0 ⩽x⩽ 1. These predicted ground-state TiCxN1-xstructures are further proved to be dynamically and mechanically stable by examining their phonon dispersion

Solid-State Explosive Reaction for Nanoporous Bulk Thermoelectric Materials.

High-performance thermoelectric materials require ultralow lattice thermal conductivity typically through either shortening the phonon mean free path or reducing the specific heat. Beyond these two approaches, a new unique, simple, yet ultrafast solid-state explosive reaction is proposed to fabricate nanoporous bulk thermoelectric materials with well-controlled pore sizes and distributions to suppress thermal conductivity. By investigating a wide variety of functional materials, general criteria for solid-state explosive reactions are built upon both thermodynamics and kinetics, and then succe

First-principles study of superconducting hydrogen sulfide at pressure up to 500 GPa.

We investigate the possibility of achieving the room-temperature superconductivity in hydrogen sulfide (H3S) through increasing external pressure, a path previously widely used to reach metallization and superconducting state in novel hydrogen-rich materials. The electronic properties and superconductivity of H3S in the pressure range of 250-500 GPa are determined by the first-principles calculations. The metallic character of a body-centered cubic Im[Formula: see text]m structure is found over the whole studied pressure. Moreover, the absence of imaginary frequency in phonon spectrum implies

Electronic and vibrational spectroscopy of cis-beta-[CrCl(2)(1,4,7,11-tetrazaundecane)chromium(III) perchlorate.

The sharp-line absorption spectrum of cis-beta-[CrCl(2)(2,2,3-tet)]ClO(4) (2,2,3-tet: 1,4,7,11-tetraazaundecane) has been measured between 13,000 and 16,000 cm(-1) at 5K. The 77K emission, 298 K infrared and visible spectra have also been measured. The zero-phonon band in the highly resolved absorption spectrum splits into four components. The vibrational intervals of the electronic ground state were determined from the far-infrared and emission spectra. The 10 electronic bands due to spin-allowed and spin-forbidden transitions were assigned. Using the observed transitions, a ligand field anal

Computational Design of Three-Dimensional Nitrogenated Holey Graphene Structures with Phase-Dependent Optoelectronic Properties.

In this work, we propose and comprehensively characterize two novel three-dimensional nitrogenated holey graphene (3D-NHG) structures, designated as the α and β phases. These architectures are predicted through a computational protocol based on the controlled compression of stacked 2D-NHG monolayers. Their dynamical and structural stabilities are assessed via phonon dispersion calculations and molecular dynamics simulations within the density-functional tight-binding framework. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the α phase is a semiconductor with an indirect HSE06 bandgap of 0

Recent advancement in prediction of thermoelectric performance in two-dimensional telluride monolayers.

Standard bulk thermoelectrics are limited by the interdependence of the thermoelectric properties (Seebeck coefficient, thermal conductivity, and electrical conductivity), requiring an comprehensive review of two-dimensional (2D) quantum confinement and atomic arrangements in tellurides to decouple these parameters for next-gen material-design roadmap. This review study employs a comprehensive meta-analysis of the literature, extracting and standardizing data from various DFT and semi-classical transport simulations to assess the influence of stoichiometry and stacking sequences on performance

Ultrafast laser-driven topological phase patterning.

Microscopic and dynamic control over quantum states is essential for bridging fundamental studies of material properties to device function. Realizing such control at combined high spatial resolution and ultrafast temporal precision remains a major challenge. Here, we demonstrate femtosecond laser-driven patterning of topological quantum states in the Weyl semimetal WTe2. By engineering the excitation field into a transient optical grating, we create spatially selective and reversible structural distortions that induce local transitions between topological and topologically trivial states. 3D topologically polarized elastic metamaterials enable asymmetric energy isolation at finite frequencies.

Topologically polarized elasticity has been extensively studied in lower dimensions, yet its three-dimensional (3D) counterpart remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate omnidirectional topological elasticity in 3D structures that incorporate bending stiffness, which elevates zero-frequency topological mechanical states into finite-frequency phononic modes. These modes are localized at a single boundary, creating a pronounced stiffness contrast in both static and finite-frequency dynamic regimes. This 3D structure exhibits highly polarized mechanical behavior across all spatial dimensio

First-Principles Framework for the Prediction of Intersystem Crossing Rates in Spin Defects: The Role of Electron Correlation.

Optically active spin defects in solids are promising platforms for quantum technologies. Here, we present a first-principles framework to investigate intersystem crossing processes, which represent crucial steps in the optical spin-polarization cycle used to address spin defects. Considering the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond as a case study, we demonstrate that our framework effectively captures electron correlation effects in the calculation of many-body electronic states and their spin-orbit coupling and electron-phonon interactions, while systematically addressing finite-size effects.

Prediction of transition metal carbonitride monolayers MN4C6 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) made up of a benzene ring and a planar MN4 moiety.

Based on first-principles calculations, we predict a class of graphene-like magnetic materials, transition metal carbonitrides MN4C6 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co), which are made up of a benzene ring and an MN4 moiety, two common planar units in the compounds. The structural stability is demonstrated by the phonon and molecular dynamics calculations, and the formation mechanism of the planar geometry of MN4C6 is ascribed to the synergistic effect of sp2 hybridization, M-N coordination bond, and π-d conjugation. The MN4C6 materials consist of only one layer of atoms and the transition metal atom is

Ultra-Broadband Optical Characterization of TiO2 Nanotube Arrays Revealing Annealing-Tunable THz Absorption.

Conventional terahertz (THz) absorbers often suffer from narrow bandwidths, bulky designs, and complex, multi-step fabrication processes. By exploiting the extremely high phonon-induced permittivity of titanium dioxide (TiO2) at THz frequencies, we report broadband absorbers based on spaced TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) fabricated by electrochemical anodization and thermal annealing featuring ∼ 80% absorptance from ∼10 THz up to 300 THz. Furthermore, the structures displayed a broad (∼1 THz wide) and tunable absorption peak in the 1.4-3.6 THz range by simply controlling the annealing time. To map the m

Ultrafast Moiré-Resolved Spectroscopy of Interlayer-Exciton Thermalization in Twisted WSe_{2}/WS_{2} Heterobilayers.

Interlayer excitons (IXs) in transition metal dichalcogenide moiré heterobilayers offer a versatile platform for exploring strongly correlated quantum phases. Despite recent progress in probing excitonic properties, the thermalization dynamics of IXs, particularly within moiré superlattices, remain poorly understood due to their intrinsic weak oscillator strength. Here, we investigate how IXs are thermalized in both R- and H-stacked WSe_{2}/WS_{2} heterobilayers using a moiré-resolved ultrafast spectroscopy that probes intralayer exciton states with distinct atomic registry and spatial localiz

Electrically Switchable Ultraslow Dispersionless Polaritons via Twist Engineering in van der Waals Heterostructures.

Polaritons in van der Waals materials provide a powerful platform for controlling slow light at nanoscales. However, realizing ultraslow polaritons in the technologically critical low-momentum regime (<10 μm-1) has so far remained elusive, which severely limits their practical applications. Here, we report a mechanism for realizing dispersionless phonon polaritons in hyperbolic hetero-bicrystals via twist engineering. We demonstrate ultraslow polaritons with group velocity down to 10-5c in the low-momentum regime, representing a 100 times improvement over previous reports. This approach is bro
