Spectral sensitivity and mechanism of interaction between inhibitory and excitatory responses of photosensory pineal neurons.

The characteristics and distribution of chromatic-type neurons in the photosensory pineal organ of the river lamprey, Lampetra japonica, were investigated electrophysiologically. Neuronal activity was inhibited by light of short wavelengths and excited by middle to long wavelengths. The maximum sensitivities of the inhibitory and excitatory responses were at about 380 nm and 540 nm respectively. The spike activity of the neurons during steady illumination for a 10-min period was measured. Although a flash of short-wavelength light caused a strong inhibition in the neuron, this effect was not s

The relative effectiveness of serial and parallel viewing of line drawings depicting possible and impossible objects.

In a series of experiments, subjects were asked to make judgements concerning the three-dimensional constructibility of line drawings depicting possible and impossible objects. A spectrum of objects was employed in which complexity as well as, for impossible objects, the cause and saliency of the contradiction in three-dimensional structure varied widely. The line drawings were presented under varying viewing conditions and exposure times. It was found that line drawings of possible objects were more often correctly identified than those of impossible ones. Parallel (simultaneous) viewing was

Horizontal fusional responses to stimuli containing artificial scotomas.

Horizontal fusional responses were studied with stimuli containing binocular or monocular, artificial, stabilized, scotomas. Binocular scotomas of 5-deg, 10-deg, and 15-deg diameters were utilized. The fusional responses to scotomatic stimuli were compared with full-field stimulus responses. All responses contained significant motor and nonmotor (sensory) components. Overall motor compensation to stimuli with 10-deg and 15-deg scotomas was reduced, while the overall motor compensation to stimuli with 5-deg scotomas was not. With full-field stimuli and with stimuli containing binocular scotomas

Effects of object motion on visual acuity in honeybees.

Object motion is a fundamental visual cue for many animals, yet its role in modulating visual perception is not fully understood. The majority of previous studies have used stationary stimuli to investigate the visual acuity of insects such as honeybees. Here, we used a behavioural assay to investigate whether object motion influences the known bounds of bees' visual acuity. Using a Y-maze, we conducted binary choice experiments where honeybees (Apis mellifera) were trained to a stimulus and then tested with pairs of stimuli varying in shape (disc versus diamond), size and motion (stationary v

Specific alignments of illumination and anisotropic surface geometry predict failures of shape constancy.

Images of an object can vary considerably due to changes in illumination direction and material. Despite this, the human visual system often recovers stable estimates of shape, suggesting the presence of invariant image structure. Prior research shows that perceived shape can be affected by the direction of illumination, but the general conditions that lead to failures of shape constancy remain unknown. Here, we show that certain shape-illumination configurations can generically cause failures of shape constancy. Aligning the illuminant with anisotropic shape features' axis of elongation (e.g.

Light flickering with 40 Hz causes analgesia via activation of a retina-amygdala pathway and the local release of adenosine.

In a recent article published in Cell Research, Chen et al. reported that light flickering at 40 Hz effectively counteracts chronic pain in Complete Freund Adjuvant (CFA)-treated mice and in mice whose tibial and common peroneal nerves were ligated (spared nerve injury, SNI) [1]. These mice served as models for inflammatory and neuropathic pain, respectively. After establishing that 40 Hz light flickering exerted analgesia in both pain models, a systematic search started for the neuronal pathways involved and the conditions required for this effect. The combination of retrograde and anterograd

Effect of Variation of Spatial and Temporal Frequencies of the Moving Field Visual Stimulus on Optokinetic Response of Adult Zebrafish.

The optokinetic response (OKR) is a reflexive behavior in which the eye intends to fixate the surrounding image in motion on its retina. The two important components of the OKR visual stimulus are the spatial frequency (SF) and the temporal frequency (TF). Zebrafish (Danio rerio) is considered an important model animal for visual physiology research. As a result, several works have been performed recently on zebrafish OKR in terms of their visual acuity or eye velocity. In the present study, a novel data pattern has been reported in terms of the relationship between ocular movement frequency (

Fusing Foveal Fixations Using Linear Retinal Transformations and Bayesian Experimental Design.

Humans (and many vertebrates) face the problem of fusing together multiple fixations of a scene in order to obtain a representation of the whole, where each fixation uses a high-resolution fovea and decreasing resolution in the periphery. In this letter, we explicitly represent the retinal transformation of a fixation as a linear downsampling of a high-resolution latent image of the scene, exploiting the known geometry. This linear transformation allows us to carry out exact inference for the latent variables in factor analysis (FA) and mixtures of FA models of the scene. This also allows us t

Visual Stimulus Materials Used in Spoken Narrative Discourse Elicitation After Traumatic Brain Injury: A Scoping Review.

PURPOSE: Management of discourse is acknowledged as a critical component of speech-language pathology practice with cognitive communication after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This scoping review aimed to collate the visual materials that are being used in empirical research for spoken narrative elicitation post-TBI, in both assessment and treatment contexts. We aimed to examine the format, structure, and sources for visuals used. Discourse analyses were also investigated. METHOD: The research was conducted and reported as per the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Anal

The use of preferred target stimuli on the acquisition of a small foreign vocabulary.

There is a growing body of research examining the efficacy of teaching a foreign language using procedures that would lead to generative learning. This study assessed the acquisition of foreign tacts and the emergence of bidirectional intraverbal responses (native-foreign and foreign-native) as a function of target stimulus preference. Three children learned to tact two sets of pictures (low- and high-preferred targets) presented in an adapted alternating-treatments design. Emergent intraverbal responses were evaluated across both directions before and after instruction. The results showed tha

Long-term multichannel recordings in Drosophila flies reveal altered predictive processing during sleep compared with wake.

During sleep, behavioral responsiveness to external stimuli is decreased. This classical definition of sleep has been applied effectively across the animal kingdom to identify this common behavioral state in a growing list of creatures, from mammals to invertebrates. Yet, it remains unclear whether decreased behavioral responsiveness during sleep is necessarily associated with decreased responsiveness in brain activity, especially in insects. Here, we performed long-term multichannel electrophysiology in tethered Drosophila melanogaster flies exposed continuously to repetitive visual stimuli.

Eye blinks as a visual processing stage.

Humans blink their eyes frequently during normal viewing, more often than it seems necessary for keeping the cornea well lubricated. Since the closure of the eyelid disrupts the image on the retina, eye blinks are commonly assumed to be detrimental to visual processing. However, blinks also provide luminance transients rich in spatial information to neural pathways highly sensitive to temporal changes. Here, we report that the luminance modulations from blinks enhance visual sensitivity. By coupling high-resolution eye tracking in human observers with modeling of blink transients and spectral

Comparing the Representation of a Simple Visual Stimulus across the Cerebellar Network.

The cerebellum is a conserved structure of the vertebrate brain involved in the timing and calibration of movements. Its function is supported by the convergence of fibers from granule cells (GCs) and inferior olive neurons (IONs) onto Purkinje cells (PCs). Theories of cerebellar function postulate that IONs convey error signals to PCs that, paired with the contextual information provided by GCs, can instruct motor learning. Here, we use the larval zebrafish to investigate (1) how sensory representations of the same stimulus vary across GCs and IONs and (2) how PC activity reflects these two d

Meridional binocular rivalry reveals a trace of uncorrected oblique input during development in the adult brain.

Binocular rivalry (BR) is a visual perception phenomenon that occurs when each eye perceives different images and stimuli, causing alternating monocular dominance. To measure BR, many studies have used two monocular conflicting images to induce monocular alternations. Here we chose a group of participants with oblique astigmatism (OA) and who produced blur on the orthogonal oblique meridian in each eye, resulting in two conflicting images, which may enhance the stimulation of monocular alternations. Our results show that OA participants tend to have a high rate of BR when viewing natural image

The role of motion in visual working memory for dynamic stimuli: More lagged but more precise representations of moving objects.

While most visual working memory studies use static stimuli with unchanging features, objects in the real world are often dynamic, introducing significant differences in the surface feature information hitting the retina from the same object over time (e.g., changes in orientation, lighting, shadows). Previous research on dynamic stimuli has shown that change detection is improved if objects obey rules of physical motion, but it is unclear how memory for visual features interacts with object motion. In the current study, we investigated whether object motion facilitates greater temporal integr

Capacity Limits Lead to Information Bottlenecks in Ongoing Rapid Motor Behaviors.

Studies of ongoing, rapid motor behaviors have often focused on the decision-making implicit in the task. Here, we instead study how decision-making integrates with the perceptual and motor systems and propose a framework of limited-capacity, pipelined processing with flexible resources to understand rapid motor behaviors. Results from three experiments show that human performance is consistent with our framework: participants perform objectively worse as task difficulty increases, and, surprisingly, this drop in performance is largest for the most skilled performers. As well, our analysis sho

Blue-light stimulation of the blind-spot constricts the pupil and enhances contrast sensitivity.

Short- and long-wavelength light can alter pupillary responses differently, allowing inferences to be made about the contribution of different photoreceptors on pupillary constriction. In addition to classical retinal photoreceptors, the pupillary light response is formed by the activity of melanopsin-expressing intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGC). It has been shown in rodents that melanopsin is expressed in the axons of ipRGCs that bundle at the optic nerve head, which forms the perceptual blind-spot. Hence, the first aim of this study was to investigate if blind-spot
