[Effects of ca(2+) -carrier A23187 and Ca(2+) -chelator EGTA on the flower formation of chrysanthemum under photoperiodic induction and the Ca2+ distribution and carbohydrate contents in leaves during the flower formation].

This paper studied the effects of Ca(2+) -carrier A23187 and Ca(2+) -chelator EGTA on the bud differentiation of cut flower chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorium 'Shenma') under photoperiodic induction, as well as the Ca2+ distribution and the sucrose, soluble sugar, and starch contents in 'Shenma' leaves during the differentiation. In the control, the leaf Ca2+ content was lower at the vegetative stage of apical bud (I), increased rapidly and reached a peak at the stage of initial differentiation (II), and decreased then. At stage I, the Ca2+ was mainly allocated in vacuole, cell wall, an…

Mammalian pineal melatonin: a clock for all seasons.

The central role of the pineal gland and its hormone melatonin (MEL) in mammalian photoperiodic responses is discussed in terms of: 1) evidence for the involvement of MEL in photoperiodism, 2) which feature of the MEL secretion profile might be most important for regulating photoperiodic responses, 3) evidence for the modulation of responses to changes in daylength based on previous photoperiod exposure (i.e., photoperiodic history) and 4) how the MEL signal might be processed at its target sites to elicit physiological responses.

Inhibition of the chick pineal rhythm in rate of thymidine incorporation by cyclic AMP.

Chick pineal glands in organ culture showed a circadian rhythm in the rate of thymidine incorporation. Thymidine incorporation was very markedly inhibited when 3-isobutyl-l-methylxanthine (IBMX) was continuously present. When IBMX was added to cultures in control medium during the photoperiod of the second day in culture, the extent of inhibition of incorporation during that photoperiod increased with the increase in length of the photoperiod remaining. Incorporation did not resume at the start of a second photoperiod if IBMX was added within the first 10 h of the first photoperiod. Correspond…

Independence of circadian entrainment state and responses to melatonin in male Siberian hamsters.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal fluctuations in physiology and behavior depend on the duration of nocturnal melatonin secretion programmed by the circadian system. A melatonin signal of a given duration, however, can elicit different responses depending on whether an animal was previously exposed to longer or shorter photoperiod signals (i.e., its photoperiodic history). This report examined in male Siberian hamsters which of two aspects of photoperiod history--prior melatonin exposure or entrainment state of the circadian system - is critical for generating contingent responses to a common photoperiodic…

Melatonin regulates type 2 deiodinase gene expression in the Syrian hamster.

In seasonal species, photoperiod organizes various physiological processes, including reproduction. Recent data indicate that the expression of type 2 iodothyronine deiodinase (Dio2) is modulated by photoperiod in the mediobasal hypothalamus of some seasonal species. Dio2 is believed to control the local synthesis of bioactive T(3) to regulate gonadal response. Here we used in situ hybridization to study Dio2 expression in the hypothalamus of a photoperiodic rodent, the Syrian hamster. Dio2 was highly expressed in reproductively active hamsters in long day, whereas it was dramatically reduced …

Circadian and seasonal cortico-medullary variations in pinealocyte nuclear size. A comparative statistical analysis.

Circadian and seasonal variations were observed in the karyometric index of pinealocytes in the cortical and medullary regions of the distal pineal body. The study involved 70 Wistar rats over a 24-hour interval (0:6, 10:00, 14:00, 18:00, 22:00, 02:00, 06:00 h) during two natural photoluminous periods, i.e. late summer (Long photoperiod) and Winter (Short photoperiod). The results show a difference between the high and low points of both photoperiods. Cortico-medullary differences are found at different times of day during long photoperiod (0:6; 10:00; 14:00 and 18:00 h.) and short photoperiod…

Discontinuity in the molecular neuroendocrine response to increasing daylengths in Ile-de-France ewes: Is transient Dio2 induction a key feature of circannual timing?

In mammals, melatonin is responsible for the synchronisation of seasonal cycles to the solar year. Melatonin is secreted by the pineal gland with a profile reflecting the duration of the night and acts via the pituitary pars tuberalis (PT), which in turn modulates hypothalamic thyroid hormone status via seasonal changes in the production of locally-acting thyrotrophin. Recently, we demonstrated that, in the Soay sheep, photoperiodic induction of Tshb expression and consequent downstream hypothalamic changes occur over a narrow range of photoperiods between 12 and 14 hours in duration. In the p…

Photo-thermal regulation of neuropeptide Y (NPY) expression in ovarian follicles and ovarian activity of the catfish, Clarias batrachus.

Authors have recently reported a gradual increase in neuropeptide Y expression in the ovarian follicles of Clarias batrachus with the progression of oogenesis, coinciding with increasing photoperiod and temperature. This indicates the involvement of photoperiod and temperature in controlling NPY expression. Therefore, a study was designed to investigate the role of photoperiod and temperature in regulation of NPY expression in ovarian follicles. The catfish were exposed to different photo-thermal regimes during the late-quiescence and late-recrudescence phases for one month, and the expression…

Patterns of melatonin secretion during sexual maturation in female ferrets.

These studies were an examination of the changes in function of the pineal gland and its secretory product, melatonin, during sexual maturation induced by stimulatory photoperiod in ferrets. Plasma melatonin patterns were determined for 48-h intervals in ferrets undergoing photoperiod-stimulated sexual maturation. Sampling regimens were conducted when ferrets were 10, 15, 16, and 23 wk of age. Clear daily rhythms in melatonin concentrations were apparent in ferrets as young as 10 wk of age. Melatonin secretion increased with the onset of darkness each day and fell with lights-on the next morni…

Latitudinal variation of immune defense and sickness behavior in the white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys).

There is a general trend that parasitism risk declines as latitude increases. Host populations breeding at high latitudes should therefore invest less in costly immune defenses than populations breeding in temperate or tropical zones, although it is unknown if such an effect is mediated by environmental (photoperiodic) or genetic factors or both. Acquired immune function (humoral, cell-mediated) and behavioral sickness responses to lipopolysaccharide (LPS; mimics bacterial infection) were assessed in two subspecies of white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys) that breed at different latit…

Seasonal Effects on Hospitalizations Due to Mood and Psychotic Disorders: A Nationwide 31-Year Register Study.

PURPOSE: To examine seasonal patterns of hospital admissions due to mood and psychotic disorders and to investigate whether the admission rates show variation according to the seasonal daylength (photoperiods). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective nationwide register-based cohort of all psychiatric admissions (N=978,079) during 1987-2017 in Finland was utilized. The smoothed time-series of adjusted ratio of observed and expected (O/E) daily counts were estimated to examine seasonal variation. The mean O/E with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was used to study the admission rates by photoperiod…

Effects of temperature on photoperiodically induced reproductive development, circulating plasma luteinizing hormone and thyroid hormones, body mass, fat deposition and molt in mountain white-crowned sparrows, Zonotrichia leucophrys oriantha.

The mountain white-crowned sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys oriantha, breeds in subalpine meadows throughout many mountainous regions of west … development following transfer to longs days (15L 9D) and low temperature (5 degrees C) slowed down photoperiodically induced gonadal growth and subsequent regression, in both males and females. High temperature of 30 degrees C tended to accelerate gonadal development and regression whereas gonadal development was intermediate in a group exposed to 20 degrees …

Embryonic diapause in the Australian plague locust relative to parental experience of cumulative photophase decline.

The Australian plague locust Chortoicetes terminifera (Walker) exhibits facultative embryonic diapause during autumn. To approximate natural photoperiod changes during late summer and autumn, locust nymphs were reared under different total declines in laboratory photophase (-0.5, -0.75, -1.0, -1.25, -1.5, -1.75, -2 h each lowered in 15 min steps) in a 24 h photoperiod to quantify any effect on the subsequent production of diapause eggs. Induction of diapause eggs was significantly affected by accumulated photoperiod decline experienced by the parental generation throughout all development stag…

Brainstem volume mediates seasonal variation in depressive symptoms: A cross sectional study in the UK Biobank cohort.

Seasonal differences in mood and depressive symptoms affect a large percentage of the general population, with seasonal affective disorder (SAD) representing the most common presentation. SAD affects up to 3% of the world's population, and it tends to be more predominant in females than males. The brainstem has been shown to be affected by photoperiodic changes, and that longer photoperiods are associated with higher neuronal density and decreased depressive-like behaviours. We predict that longer photoperiod days are associated with larger brainstem volumes and lower depressive scores, and th…

Role of daylength in the regulation of reproductive function in the male mongoose, Herpestes auropunctatus.

The male mongoose, Herpestes auropunctatus, displays a distinct seasonal reproductive rhythm in environments which show minimal changes in daylength. This investigation was designed to evaluate whether the reproductive system of the male mongoose was responsive to photoperiodic manipulations. Four experiments were conducted; two during the breeding season, one during the inactive season, and one during the recrudescence phase. Serum androgen levels and reproductive organ weights were similar in males exposed to either short (6L:18D) or control photoperiods (14L:10D) when the photoperiodic adju…

How does melatonin control seasonal reproductive cycles?

The pineal gland is essential for the perception of photoperiod change in many species. Information about photoperiod length is conveyed through pineal secretion of the methoxyindole melatonin. Melatonin, suitably administered in physiological quantities is equipotent with artificial photoperiod in the induction of photoperiodic responses. Most experimental work suggests that it is the duration of high night time melatonin secretion (positively correlated with the length of the natural or artificial dark phase) which conveys the photoperiodic signal. Continuous release implants induce short da…

Seasonal reproduction and gonadal function: a focus on humans starting from animal studies.

Photoperiod impacts reproduction in many species of mammals. Mating occurs at specific seasons to achieve reproductive advantages, such as optimization of offspring survival. Light is the main regulator of these changes during the photoperiod. Seasonally breeding mammals detect and transduce light signals through extraocular photoreceptor, regulating downstream melatonin-dependent peripheral circadian events. In rodents, hormonal reduction and gonadal atrophy occur quickly and consensually with short-day periods. It remains unclear whether photoperiod influences human reproduction. Seasonal fl…

Triiodothyronine and melatonin influence antioxidant defense mechanism in a teleost Anabas testudineus (Bloch): in vitro study.

The effect of the hormones triiodothyronine (T3) and melatonin on antioxidant defense system was studied in 6-propyl thiouracil (6-PTU)-treated or photoperiod-exposed teleost Anabas testudineus. 6-PTU (2 microg/g) treatment or photoperiod exposure (24 h) increased malondialdehyde (MDA) and conjugated dienes (CD) concentrations, indicating increased lipid peroxidation (LPO) in the experimental conditions. T3 or melatonin (10(-6) M) treatment for 15 min in vitro in PTU-treated fish reversed the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione content. T3-treated group showed no c…

Effects of a temperature rise on melatonin and thyroid hormones during smoltification of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar.

Smoltification prepares juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) for downstream migration. Dramatic changes characterize this crucial event in the salmon's life cycle, including increased gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity (NKA) and plasma hormone levels. The triggering of smoltification relies on photoperiod and is modulated by temperature. Both provide reliable information, to which fish have adapted for thousands of years, that allows deciphering daily and calendar time. Here we studied the impact of different photoperiod (natural, sustained winter solstice) and temperature (natural, ~ + 4° C) combi…

Seasonal regulation of reproduction: altered role of melatonin under naturalistic conditions in hamsters.

The seasonal reproductive cycle of photoperiodic rodents is conceptualized as a series of discrete melatonin-dependent neuroendocrine transitions. Least understood is the springtime restoration of responsiveness to winter-like melatonin signals (breaking of refractoriness) that enables animals to once again respond appropriately to winter photoperiods the following year. This has been posited to require many weeks of long days based on studies employing static photoperiods instead of the annual pattern of continually changing photoperiods under which these mechanisms evolved. Maintaining Siber…
