Dispersal of the northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini and Fanzago), and the chicken body louse, Menacanthus stramineus (Nitzsch), among thirty strains of egg-type hens in a caged laying house.

From September 1978 through Februrary 1979, dispersal of uncontrolled, naturally occurring populations of the northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum (Canestrini and Fanzago), and the chicken body louse, Menacanthus stramineus (Nitzch) was studied on 30 strains of egg-type pullets reared to 20 weeks old on four growing rations before being housed for egg production. Hens representing all 30 strains and each of the four feeding regimens had mites. The northern fowl mite spread from initial infestations down the entire length of the house in 1 month; after four months, the chicken body louse

Louse-borne relapsing fever in the Sudan. A historical review and a clinico-pathological study.

A small outbreak of louse-borne relapsing fever in Khartoum (May-June 1974) provided material for a clinico-pathological study. The history of the disease in the Sudan is reviewed and the clinical and laboratory findings in 32 patients are presented. Fever, headache, jaundice, epistaxis and hepatosplenomegaly were the commonest clinical findings; thrombocytopenia was detected in 93% of cases. Although elevated levels of fibrin degradation products were found in most patients, disseminated intravascular coagulation could not be diagnosed. Hepatocellular derangement was found in 68% of cases, wh

Detection of Bartonella schoenbuchensis (sub)species DNA in different louse fly species in Saxony, Germany: The proof of multiple PCR analysis necessity in case of ruminant-associated bartonellae determination.

BACKGROUND: Hippoboscid flies are bloodsucking arthropods that can transmit pathogenic microorganisms and are therefore potential vectors for pathogens such as Bartonella spp. These Gram-negative bacteria can cause mild-to-severe clinical signs in humans and animals; therefore, monitoring Bartonella spp. prevalence in louse fly populations appears to be a useful prerequisite for zoonotic risk assessment. METHODS: Using convenience sampling, we collected 103 adult louse flies from four ked species (Lipoptena cervi, n = 22; Lipoptena fortisetosa, n = 61; Melophagus ovinus, n = 12; Hippobosca eq

Molecular and Functional Characterization of GABA Receptor Subunits GRD and LCCH3 from Human Louse Pediculus Humanus Humanus.

Human louse Pediculus humanus is a cosmopolitan obligatory blood-feeding ectoparasite causing pediculosis and transmitting many bacterial pathogens. Control of infestation is difficult due to the developed resistance to insecticides that mainly target GABA (γ-aminobutyric acid) receptors. Previous work showed that Pediculus humanus humanus (Phh) GABA receptor subunit resistance to dieldrin (RDL) is the target of lotilaner, a synthetic molecule of the isoxazoline chemical class. To enhance our understanding of how insecticides act on GABA receptors, two other GABA receptor subunits were cloned

Chewing lice of passerine birds in reed beds in Slovakia, with a special focus on Panurus biarmicus.

A total of 1185 passerine birds representing five species were examined for chewing lice in reed beds in southwestern Slovakia in spring (April) 2008, 2009 and 2016. Additional collecting focused only on chewing lice from Panurus biarmicus (Linnaeus, 1758) (Passeriformes: Panuridae) was carried out in spring (April), summer (July) and autumn (October) 2019. A total of 283 (24%) birds were parasitized by 10 species of chewing lice of four genera: Penenirmus, Menacanthus, Philopterus, and Brueelia. Most birds showed only very light (1-10 lice/host; 74%) to light infestations (11-20 lice/host; 16

Detection and quantification of Leishmania braziliensis in ectoparasites from dogs.

American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is a disease caused by different species of Leishmania protozoa, Leishmania braziliensis being the main species found in Brazil. In this study, two rural areas in Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, where ACL is endemic, were selected. Genomic DNA was extracted from canine ectoparasites (ticks, fleas, and lice) and tested using a conventional PCR and a quantitative real time PCR. A total of 117 ectoparasites were collected, being 50 (42.74%) of them positive for L. braziliensis (in at least one PCR protocol), with a mean parasite load of 14.14 fg/μL. Further

Louse and tick borne relapsing fevers.

Relapsing fever, caused by spirochaetes belonging to the genus Borrelia, was once the cause of worldwide epidemic zoonotic disease. This was largely through infection with the louse-borne form of the disease, caused by Borrelia recurrentis [(louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF)]. Another form of replasing fever is caused by Borrelia duttonii [(tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF)]. The introduction and the wide use of DDT in the last century, which is forbidden now, the incidence and prevalence of both LBRF and TBRF markedly decreased. However, with the increase of rapid transportation, crowdedness

[Mallophaga species observed in white pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus, Linnaeus) in Turkey].

This study was carried out on six white pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) between the years 2002-2006. Oral cavities of the pelicans were examined macroscopically. The lice found in the oral cavities were collected by forceps and were preserved in tubes containing 70% alcohol. Also, each pelican was put in a big carton-box, the bottom of which was covered with a white paper and the pelicans were treated with propoxur for a few minutes. The lice that fell on to the paper were collected in a Petri dish and later on they were put in vials containing 70% alcohol. Five (83.3%) out of the six pelican

Rickettsial diseases in Russia.

Currently, several rickettsioses are officially being reported in the Russian Federation. These are epidemic typhus and Brill-Zinsser disease, both caused by Rickettsia prowazekii which has a historic prevalence in Russia. Nowadays only single sporadic cases of R. prowazekii infection are reported. The last significant outbreak occurred in 1997 in a mental nursing home, where 29 cases were identified. Registered morbidity of typhus in Russia varies from 0 to 0.01 per thousand for the last decade. Siberian tick typhus, caused by R. sibirica, is registered on a large territory from Pacific coast

Leaf-grooming by a wild chimpanzee in Mahale.

During the course of systematic observations of the leaf-grooming behavior by the chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) of the Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania, I recovered a louse from a leaf "groomed" by an adult male chimpanzee after a typical leaf-grooming session. During the leaf-grooming session I observed a small object on his lower lip. He picked up a leaf, transferred the small object from his lip to the leaf, folded the leaf and crushed the folded side of the leaf with his thumb. I present this observation as further evidence of the "squashing ectoparasites" hypothesis for leaf-groom

Evaluation of the in-vitro pediculicidal action of four known insecticides and three medicinal plant extracts.

Human lice is an increasing community health problem worldwide. This is particularly true among school children who spend most of their daytime in crowded areas. Four commercially known insecticides and three medicinal plant extracts were studied to evaluate their pediculicidal activities in-vitro. The best result with insecticides was achieved with malathion (Lt5o 10.396 and slope function 1.183). The best result with medicinal plant extracts was achieved with neem oil (A. indica) (Lt5o 85.27 and slope function 1.480). Although, neem oil extract was less active than malathion, yet it is more

Serum and skin surface antibodies and their associations with sheep biting lice, Bovicola ovis, on experimentally infested sheep.

The sheep biting louse (Bovicola ovis) feeds superficially on the skin of sheep but appears to stimulate an immune response. In this study we examined the association between louse infestation and serum and skin surface antibodies. Louse numbers were monitored on experimentally infested Polypay and Columbia ewes for two years and on their lambs in the second year. Serum and skin wash samples were tested for antibodies to soluble extracts of B. ovis, Stomoxys calcitrans and Musca autumnalis by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In addition, the effects of skin wash extracts on B. ovis w

Ingestion of host antibodies by Bovicola ovis on sheep.

Sheep body lice, Bovicola ovis, collected from moderately heavy infestations on Merino wethers, were assayed by ELISA for their content of host-derived specific immunoglobulin (Ig). Relative concentrations of anti-horse myoglobin antibodies in the lice and in sera from their hosts were used to estimate the total quantities of functional Ig (that which remained capable of binding specifically to its antigen) present, giving a mean of 0.21 +/- 0.20 mg/g of lice. An attempt to demonstrate the presence of antibodies against B. ovis antigens in naturally-infested host sheep using ELISA produced inc

Comparative ultrastructural study of the cuticle of larvae and adults of Centrorhynchus milvus Ward, 1956 (Acanthocephala, Centrorhynchidae).

The cuticle of Centrorhynchus milvus acanthella and cystacanth larvae, obtained from the terrestrial crustacean Porcellionides pruinosus, is roughly 0.2 micron thick. The cuticle of juveniles encysted in toads, paratenic hosts, measures up to 0.5 micron whereas that of adults may exceed 2 microns in thickness. In all cases it is perforated by numerous pores that communicate with the hypoderm. During larval development, the numerous endocytotic vacuoles observed in acanthella 3, 4, and 5 and cystacanths became elongated canals in juveniles and adults. There is no significant ultrastructural mod

Ixodid ticks and lice infesting red duikers and bushpigs in north-eastern Natal.

Eighteen red duikers, Cephalophus natalensis, from the Charters Creek Nature Reserve and 2 from Fanies Island Nature Reserve were processed for arthropod parasite recovery. They harboured 8 species of ixodid ticks and 2 lice species. All were infested with Haemaphysalis parmata and the nymphs of Rhipicephalus muehlensi. Two bushpigs, Potamochoerus porcus, from the Ndumu Nature Reserve, 5 from the Eastern Shores Nature Reserve and 1 from Cape Vidal were examined for ectoparasites. They were infested with 8 ixodid tick species, of which Rhipicephalus maculatus was the most abundant, and with 1 l
