Associations Between Training Load and Acceleration-Speed Profile in Youth Soccer Athletes.

Soccer requires athletes to exhibit high levels of acceleration and speed, both of which are crucial for optimal performance. The acceleration-speed (A-S) profile is increasingly utilized to assess these sprinting capacities in soccer, providing in situ insights into an athlete's maximal theoretical acceleration (A0) and speed (S0). This study aimed to investigate the association of external load metrics with A0 and S0 across different age groups in elite academy soccer athletes. One hundred thirty-six athletes, ranging from under-14 to B-team, participated in the study. Training sessions and

A comparison of foot and ankle biomechanics during running drills and distance running.

The aim of this study was to compare the foot-ankle joint mechanics of running drills and running. Seventeen long-distance runners performed five popular running drills (A-skip, B-skip, Bounding, Heel flicks, Straight leg running) and a run at 3.88 m/s. Kinematics, kinetics and power values were calculated for the ankle, midtarsal (MT) and metatarsophalangeal (MP) joints. Electromyographic activity was recorded for the soleus, gastrocnemius medialis, lateralis and abductor hallucis muscle. The A-skip, the B-skip and the Heel flicks induced a smaller ankle (p < 0.001, ŋ2 = 0.41), MT (p < 0.001,

The Effect of Combined Strength, Plyometric, and Sprint Training on Repeated Sprint Ability in Team-Sport Athletes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Repeated sprint ability (RSA) is crucial for success in team sports, and involves both neuromuscular and metabolic factors. While single-mode training (SGL; e.g., sprint training) and combined training (CT; e.g., sprint + plyometric) can improve RSA, whether CT offers additional benefits compared to SGL or active controls maintaining routine training (CON) remains uncertain in team-sport athletes. This study evaluates the effect of CT versus SGL and CON on the RSA of team-sport athletes. A comprehensive search was conducted in five electronic databases. Thirteen studies involving 394 males and

Biceps Femoris Muscle is Activated by Performing Nordic Hamstring Exercise at a Shallow Knee Flexion Angle.

The semitendinosus (ST) muscle is primarily used during Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE), which is often prescribed for preventing hamstring injury, though the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) muscle that is more susceptible to injuries. Thus, this study aimed to identify the modulation of BFlh muscle activity with different knee flexion angles during NHE using an inclined platform. Fourteen male athletes performed NHE and maintained their position at maximum inclination (NH). Subjects also performed isometric NHE using a platform inclined to 50° (ICL) and 40° (ICH), and the knee flexion angle w

Effect of a cooling strategy combining forearm water immersion and a low dose of ice slurry ingestion on physiological response and subsequent exercise performance in the heat.

Although numerous studies have shown the benefits of cooling strategies for reducing thermal strain and subsequent exercise performance in the heat, few studies have focused on a combination of external and internal cooling. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to examine the impact of a cooling strategy combining forearm water immersion and a low dose of ice slurry ingestion on physiological response and subsequent exercise performance in the heat. Eight non-heat-acclimated males participated in this study. After reaching a rectal temperature of 38.5 °C through a bout of cycling ex

Respiratory mechanics and cerebral blood flow during heat-induced hyperventilation and its voluntary suppression in passively heated humans.

We investigated whether heat-induced hyperventilation can be voluntarily prevented, and, if so, how this modulates respiratory mechanics and cerebral blood flow in resting heated humans. In two separate trials, 10 healthy men were passively heated using lower body hot-water immersion and a water-perfused garment covering their upper body (both 41°C) until esophageal temperature (Tes ) reached 39°C or volitional termination. In each trial, participants breathed normally (normal-breathing) or voluntarily controlled minute ventilation (VE ) at a level equivalent to that observed after 5 min of he

The effect of different foot and hand set-up positions on backstroke start performance.

Foot and hand set-up position effects were analysed on backstroke start performance. Ten swimmers randomly completed 27 starts grouped in trials (n = 3) of each variation, changing foot (totally immersed, partially and totally emerged) and hand (lowest, highest horizontal and vertical) positioning. Fifteen cameras recorded kinematics, and four force plates collected hands and feet kinetics. Standardised mean difference and 95% confidence intervals were used. Variations with feet immersed have shown lower vertical centre of mass (CM) set-up position (0.16 m), vertical impulse exerted at the han

Developing a pig model for crypt fenestration-induced localized hypoplastic enamel defects in humans.

Hypoplastic pits on human deciduous canine teeth are attributed to nutritionally induced thinning of the crypt wall prior to eruption, exposing ameloblasts to unspecified physical trauma through the fenestration. Traditionally known as localized hypoplasia of the primary canine (LHPC), this little-understood condition is reported in fields ranging from public health to bioarchaeology. We propose the defect be termed a ‘crypt fenestration hypoplastic enamel defect’ (CFED) to reflect that an analogous lesion is created postnatally on maxillary molars of pigs. Pigs are accepted as a suitable prox

Treadmill Running Model for Rodents as a Translational Approach Based on Human Physiological Responses.

The concept of "Exercise is Medicine" highlights the preventive effects of physical activity on lifestyle-related diseases, dementia, and mental disorders. However, human studies face limitations in isolating exercise-specific effects due to uncontrolled variables such as diet and living conditions, as well as the constraint of non-invasive methodologies. Animal models offer a valuable alternative, allowing for strict control of experimental conditions and detailed assessment of physiological and neural responses to exercise. While voluntary wheel running has been commonly used, it lacks stand

Diencephalic and brainstem circuit mechanisms underlying autonomic cardiovascular adjustments to exercise: Recent insights from rodent studies.

Autonomic cardiovascular adjustments to exercise, essential for meeting the increased metabolic demands of exercising skeletal muscle, are regulated by motor volition-driven neural activation, i.e., central command. The contribution of brain mechanisms to these adjustments has been suggested for more than a century, yet the functional brain architecture remains incompletely understood. This article discusses recent findings primarily obtained from rodent studies utilizing advanced experimental tools, particularly those enabled by genetic engineering, such as optogenetics and viral neural traci

Excessive exercise elicits poly (ADP-ribose) Polymerase-1 activation and global protein PARylation driving muscle dysfunction and performance impairment.

Excessive exercise combined with inadequate recovery time may trigger fatigue, performance impairment, and ultimately the overtraining syndrome. The intramyocellular mechanisms involved in the overtraining syndrome remain only partially known. Here, we combined multi-omics analyses from isogenic BXD mouse strains with a mouse model of overtraining and excessive exercise protocol in mice and humans to evaluate the molecular mechanism involved in the performance impairment induced by excessive exercise. We identified that BXD mouse strains with elevated levels of Parp1 gene expression in the ske
