Arthritis associated with pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) is a rare papulosquamous disease of unknown aetiology, with an estimated prevalence of 2.5 per million.1 It is clinically characterised by the presence of follicular hyperkeratotic papules, but the histopathology is usually non-specific. An interesting case of asymmetric, inflammatory arthritis of the hand in a patient who also presented with PRP is presented, along with a review of the few previously reported cases the literature.

Bilateral areolar and periareolar pityriasis versicolor.

An adolescent boy presented with isolated, symmetrical, bilateral areolar and periareolar pityriasis versicolor. This extremely rare condition should be considered in the differential diagnosis of light brown patches on the areolae.

Vesicular pityriasis rosea: an atypical presentation.

Pityriasis rosea (PR) is an acute, self-limited papulosquamous dermatosis localized on the trunk and extremities. PR is seen most frequently in adolescents and young adults. Many atypical forms of the disease have been reported in the literature. We report a rare atypical type of PR with vesicles on the erythematous macules and plaques.

Penile shaft involvement in pityriasis versicolor.

The Malassezia yeasts are among the normal human cutaneous flora in adults. They are also reported as part of the microflora of male genital region, mostly in uncircumcised males. The prevalence of Malassezia yeast colonization on the glans penis of circumcised males is discussed in multiple studies. We report the case of a male patient with extensive pityriasis versicolor that does not involve the preputial space.

Azithromycin does not cure pityriasis rosea.

OBJECTIVES: Pityriasis rosea (PR) is a common skin disorder in children. Its cause is unknown. A recent publication reported a 73% cure rate in patients with PR after treatment with erythromycin. To duplicate this result using a drug with fewer adverse effects and greater biological half-life, we set out to study the effect of azithromycin on PR. Azithromycin is an azalide antibiotic with a spectrum of antimicrobial activity very similar to that of erythromycin. DESIGN: We randomly assigned 49 children with PR to receive either azithromycin (12 mg/kg per day, up to a maximum of 500 mg/day) fo…

Tinea versicolor mimicking pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Tinea versicolor is a common noninvasive cutaneous fungal disease. We recount a case of tinea versicolor that mimicked type I (classic adult) pityriasis rubra pilaris. A 54-year-old white man reported a 20-year history of a recurrent pruritic eruption that had marginally improved with use of selenium sulfide shampoo and treatment with oral antihistamines. Results of a skin examination revealed erythematous plaques; islands of spared skin; and follicular erythematous keratotic papules on the trunk, shoulders, and upper arms. A lesion was scraped to obtain skin scales for potassium hydroxide sta…

[How I treat...pityriasis rubra pilaris].

Pityriasis rubra pilaris is a syndrome of unknown etiology. Six distinct clinical types have been described in infancy and adulthood. Oral retinoids have proven their efficacy. Emollients and topical calcipotriol may improve the clinical presentation.

Clinico epidemiological study of pityriasis alba.

Even though pityriasis alba is commonly encountered in dermatological practice, there is paucity of Indian studies on the subject. A clinico epidermiological study was carried out in 200 patients attending the skin department of Command Hospital, Air Force, Bangalore. Atopic background was detected in 85.5% of cases. Bacterial and fungal culture studies failed to reveal any infective aetiology. Helmenthiasis and iron deficiency anaemia were detected in 15.5% and 16.5% of patients respectively. However no other nutritional deficiency was observed in the present study. Majority (84.5%) of patien…

Pityriasis versicolor--epidemiological and therapeutical study.

Seventy-six patients with extensive pityriasis versicolor were divided into 3 groups and treated orally with ketoconazole, 200 mg daily, for 10, 20 or 30 days respectively. 50 patients out of this number completed the study. After 6 months, 46 patients were checked up. Eight of them developed relapses effectively treated with ketoconazole for another 15 days. Six out of these 8 patients belonged to the first group using ketoconazole for 20 days only. On the basis of this observation, we do not consider a 10 days' treatment to be sufficient and recommend that the patient should be treated for a…

Isotretinoin treatment of pityriasis rubra pilaris.

Five patients with pityriasis rubra pilaris were treated with isotretinoin from September 1982 through 1985. Isotretinoin at an average dose of 1.16 mg/kg/day for 16 to 24 weeks caused complete or almost complete clearing in four of the five patients.

[Pityriasis versicolor pseudoatrophicans. A case description].

We report on a pseudoatrophic manifestation of tinea versicolor. A 32-year-old female patient, who had suffered from typical spotty lesions of tinea versicolor for 12 years, now additionally developed pseudoatrophic lesions within a few weeks. Complete remission of these lesions after local antimycotic therapy as well as mycological and histopathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of pseudoatrophic tinea versicolor.

[Pityriasis versicolor due to Malassezia ovalis].

In a randomly collected series of 175 cases of pityriasis versicolor in residents of the central-northern part of Venezuela, 13% of the patients were infected with ovoid unicellular units of the causal fungus (Malassezia ovalis) and 87% with globous unicellular units in the scales (M. furfur). Only globous unicellular units (Pityrosporum orbiculare) were seen outside the active lesions and in these, after the successful treatment with ketoconazole. The median age of 40 'ovalis' patients was 37.5 years; the same in 40 'furfur' patients was 24.5 years. The median age at the moment of discovering…
