In contrast to the effects of rapid infusion of gelatin and dextran preparations, no histamine release was observed in 10 human subjects (volunteers) following rapid infusion of hydroxyethyl starch. This was measured by fluorometric histamine determination in venous plasma. Furthermore no clinical symptoms of an allergic or anaphylactoid reaction could be detected in any of the volunteers.

Carboxylmethylated konjac glucomannan (CKGM) is a carboxylmethylated polymer of mannose and glucose that is derived from the plant Amorphophallus konjac cultivated in East Asia. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a dose titration model for recombinant human GH substitution in adult patients with GH deficiency, aiming at normal plasma levels of IGF-I.
DESIGN AND METHODS: Eighteen patients participated and a start dose of 0.17 mg GH/day was used except by two men who started with 0.33 mg/day. To demonstrate a clear GH effect the patients were first titrated, with steps of 0.17 mg GH/day every 6-8 weeks, to IGF-I levels in the upper range of age-adjusted reference values. PURPOSE: Proteinuria is frequently encountered in patients in the intensive care unit, most likely as a result of renal tubular cell injury. It has been reported that gelatin-derived plasma substitutes contribute to an increase in renal protein excretion. The aim of this study was to investigate the magnitude and the mechanism of the proteinuric effect of Gelofusine, a modified gelatin.

We have studied the effects of L-thyroxine substitution on lipoprotein concentrations, on the activities of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase (HL), and on the elimination rate of exogenous triglyceride in a homogeneous group of patients with hypothyroidism of pituitary origin.
