Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) images were obtained in 12 patients with mass lesions in the posterior fossa and the results compared with X-ray computed tomography (CT). Inversion recovery T1-weighted images demonstrated abnormalities in six of six intrinsic lesions and three of six extrinsic lesions. A total of 43 patients with surgically identified acoustic neuromas were tested. Results of early auditory evoked potentials (EAEP) and of neuroradiological methods were analysed. Abnormal EAEPs were observed in all patients. In 73% of the cases the EAEP indicated the retrocochlear site of the lesion; in 27%, however, the results did not localize the exact site of the lesion owing to a lack of waves I, II and III due to a pronounced hearing loss. The pituitary function in 20 patients with primary empty sella syndrome has been evaluated. The only endocrine symptom was secondary amenorrhoea in four patients. In half of the patients, pituitary function tests showed minor abnormalities, the most common being impaired growth hormone response to glucagon. We are reporting eight patients who demonstrated double compartment hydrocephalus, i.e., supratentorial and infratentorial hydrocephalus in clinical sequence and separately. One infant with veil occlusion of the aqueduct was operated on to remove the veil and then later demonstrated panhydrocephalus. Twenty patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus were examined by computerized axial transverse tomographic (CT) scanning and the results were compared with pneumoencephalographic findings and clinical responses to ventricular shunting. The CT scan revealed significant cortical atrophy, not demonstrated by pneumoencephalogram in seven patients. The cortical atrophy was confirmed by autopsy in one case. The clinical symptoms of thirty patients with surgically treated posterior fossa meningiomas were reviewed. These included 16 cerebellopontine (CPA), 7 cerebellar, 4 carrefour-falco-tentorial (CFT), 2 foramen magnum, and 1 clivus meningiomas. Herein we review the symptoms, physical findings, and test results in 131 patients with acoustic neurinoma. The earliest symptoms are unilateral hearing loss, tinnitus, and dysequilibrium. As the disease progresses, facial numbness, facial weakness, and headaches become more prominent. Tne cases of growing fractures seen in the last 10 years are presented. Six of the patients sustained their injury within the first six months of life. Seven cases of adhesive arachnoiditis of the optochiasmatic cistern, verified surgically, with a history of head injury are presented. Neuroophthalmologic findings consisted of impairment of visual acuity and funduscopic atrophy rather than papilledema. The visual fields showed a damage of the periaxial rather than the axial type. Neuroradiologic examinations did not consistently give the findings considered classical of optochiasmatic arachnoiditis.
