Global health and care worker migration requires a global response.

The global migration of the health and care workforce (HCWF) has intensified, leading to complex policy scenarios and diverse migration patterns. While the traditional narrative of individual health and care workers (HCWs) migrating from low- and middle-income countries to high-income countries in search of higher income, career prospects and working conditions remains relevant, it now coexists with many other drivers, incentives, and dynamics at individual and policy level. The evolving dynamics of HCW migration have profound implications extending far beyond health labour markets, influencin

Treating sickle cell disease in resource-limited sub-Saharan Africa: recent strategies and recommendations in addressing the gaps for the provision of evidence-based management.

INTRODUCTION: The management of Sickle cell disease (SCD) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) suffers from the lack of universal infant and population screening, inadequate access to standard treatment and poor public health prioritization amidst unstable political systems. AREAS COVERED: The state of evidencebased management of SCD in SSA was investigated including sustainability of international funding agencies. EXPERT OPINION: Current efforts are fragmentary along languages lines; sometimes driven by the funder's objectives and not the national agenda. The review highlighted the role of internal…

Homelessness And Health: Factors, Evidence, Innovations That Work, And Policy Recommendations.

On a single night in 2023, more than 653,000 people experienced homelessness in the United States. In this overview, we highlight structural and individual risk factors that can lead to homelessness, explore evidence on the relationship between homelessness and health, discuss programmatic and policy innovations, and provide policy recommendations. Health system efforts to address homelessness and improve the health of homeless populations have included interventions such as screening for social needs and medical respite programs. Initiatives using the Housing First approach to permanent suppo

A case study of the long-term sustainability of an oral health program for persons experiencing homelessness.

Stakeholders engaged in funding health programs and investing in human capital are concerned that their investments lead to beneficial long-term outcomes and do not fade from existence when funding streams dry up. However, dissemination and implementation researchers often pay little attention to what happens after programs are implemented. An essential function of the public health nurse operating at the executive management or leadership level is to evaluate overall effectiveness, quality, and sustainability of programs and to design systems-level quality initiatives and evaluation plans tha

Girls and women speak out from Afghan moral prisons: Tackling extremism and violence against women in a conflict environment.

ABSTRACTThis empirical research documented voices of women and girls in female shelters and prisons in Samangan, Laghman and Wardak provinces who experienced systematic sexual and gender based violence before and after they escaped forced marriages, forced virginity tests, physical and sexual violence. Women who challenged the status quo, fundamentalism and extremism faced imprisonment for up to five years. The research interviewed primary, secondary and territory health care professionals, who carried out or witnessed invasive virginity tests. The evidence suggests that women are being depriv

What we have learnt from the SARS epdemics in mainland China?

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

This article provides an overview of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemics in mainland China and of what we have learned since the outbreak. The epidemics spanned a large geographical extent but clustered in two regions: first in Guangdong Province, and about 3 months later in Beijing and its surrounding areas. The resulting case fatality ratio of 6.4% was less than half of that in other SARS-affected countries and regions, partly due to younger-aged patients and a higher proportion of community-acquired infections. Strong political commitment and a centrally coordinated respo

Arthur Neve (1859-1919) and a Mission Hospital in Srinagar, Kashmir.

Mark Harrison has said that hospitals occupy a central place within health-care systems, not only on account of their curative functions but also as centres of teaching and research. The indigenous system of medicine practised by Hakims in Kashmir is the Unani. The Mission Hospital in Srinagar, Kashmir became the most important hospital attracting patients, not only within Kashmir but also in the surrounding countries and not only because of the curative facilities provided at the hospital but also because of the humane approach of its physicians, outstanding among them being Arthur Neve. Rebuilding the health care system in Afghanistan: an overview of primary care and emergency services.

Developing nations have many challenges to the growth of emergency medical systems. This development in Afghanistan is also complicated by many factors that plague post-conflict countries including an unstable political system, poor economy, poor baseline health indices, and ongoing violence. Progress has been made in Afghanistan with the implementation of the Basic Package of Health Service (BPHS) by the Ministry of Public Health in an effort to provide healthcare that would have the most cost-effective impact on common health problems. Trauma and trauma-related disability were both identifie

The value and role of skin and nail assessment in the critically ill.

Over the last 10 years, numerous political drivers have paved the way for the development of new and innovative models of practice within the critical care environment. Many of these new models of practice required practitioners to perform detailed and comprehensive patient assessment. Within critical care, respiratory assessment is increasingly regarded as an essential element of a critical care practitioner's profile. However, the assessment of other body systems has been adopted more slowly. This article argues that skin and nail assessment should be ascribed a high priority within practiti

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication in the Eastern Mediterranean Region of the World Health Organization.

The Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) of the World Health Organization has made substantial progress toward eradicating poliomyelitis. From 1988 to 1995, the number of confirmed cases of polio decreased 66%, from 2342 to 789. National immunization days were conducted in 18 (78%) of the 23 countries in 1995, representing 88% of the regional population. By 1995, 20 countries (87%) in the EMR had established systems for reporting acute flaccid paralysis (AFP), 20 (87%) were investigating AFP or polio cases epidemiologically, 18 (78%) had initiated follow-up at 60 days to confirm or discard suspe

Rebuilding GeoHealth: Science, Governance, and Resilience After 2025.

Recent U.S. federal policy changes have created disruption and uncertainty for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in GeoHealth, the interlocking sciences connecting Earth systems to human health and wellbeing. The termination of billions of dollars in research and implementation funding, the dismantling of data systems and regulatory authority, and reductions in scientific workforce capacity have had cascading domestic and global consequences. These changes affect research and public health workflows, health outcomes, and the institutions that create evidence-based policy. This contr

An Ethical Analysis of a Healthcare Scandal: Lessons from the "Newborn Gang" Case.

The "Newborn Gang" scandal, which emerged in Türkiye in 2024, exposed allegations of organized fraud, manipulation of neonatal intensive care referrals, financial exploitation of the healthcare reimbursement system, and preventable infant deaths. While previous publications have contributed important perspectives on the case, including its political, economic, and ethical dimensions, there remains a need for a more comprehensive ethical analysis integrating clinical, organizational, and health system perspectives. This study reconstructs the chronology of the case using publicly available docu

National palliative care laws in Europe: do they enable access and effectively promote the development of palliative care within health systems? A comparative multimethod analysis.

Access to palliative care (PC) is a fundamental right. While an increasing number of European countries have adopted national PC laws, it remains unclear how effective these laws are in advancing access and enabling development within health systems. This was a comparative multimethod study combining systematic analysis of national PC legislation with semi-structured interviews with national experts. Legal texts were analysed using a standardized extraction framework aligned with the WHO PC development model. Interview data provided interpretive context, contextualized legislative intent, and

Advancing Trauma Care in Sri Lanka: System Overview and Developmental Priorities.

Trauma is a leading cause of global mortality and morbidity, with road traffic injuries being a significant contributor, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). With 25,000 road traffic accidents annually, Sri Lanka faces a substantial trauma burden, making it the leading cause of hospitalisation. Effective trauma systems, encompassing prevention, pre-hospital care, in-hospital treatment, rehabilitation, and planning, are crucial for improving patient outcomes and alleviating strain on the healthcare system. This review examines the key components of trauma systems and evaluate

Health system strengthening: prospects and threats for its sustainability on the global health policy agenda.

In 2013, Hafner and Shiffman applied Kingdon's public policy process model to explain the emergence of global attention to health system strengthening (HSS). They questioned, however, HSS's sustainability on the global health policy agenda, citing various concerns. Guided by the Grindle and Thomas interactive model of policy implementation, we advance and elaborate a proposition: a confluence of developments will contribute to maintaining HSS's prominent place on the agenda until at least 2030. Those developments include (1) technical, managerial, financial, and political responses to unpredic

Voices on Fire: Narratives on Nurse Activism Amid Power Dynamics in the Philippines.

This study explored the narratives of 10 Filipino nurse activists who transformed experiences of suffering, exploitation, and professional marginalization into organized resistance and advocacy. In the Philippine context, nurses continue to face poor working conditions, inadequate compensation, migration pressures, and political threats such as red-tagging, yet little is known about how they navigate the shift from endurance to activism. Guided by narrative inquiry and informed by Foucauldian archeology and genealogy, the study examined interviews alongside position statements and news article
