Volatile Insensitivity and Localized Alkaloids Support Commensalism in the Oxytropis sericea-Alternaria oxytropis Association.

The endophytic fungus Alternaria oxytropis is vertically transmitted through silky crazyweed (Oxytropis sericea Nutt.) and produces the neurotoxin swainsonine, yet its influence on host chemical signaling remains unclear. Here we characterize the floral and foliar volatile organic compound (VOC) profiles of endophyte-infected (E+) and endophyte-free (E-) O. sericea using dynamic headspace GC-MS on greenhouse- and field-grown plants - the first characterization of volatile profiles in this species. Endophyte infection had a negligible effect on VOC composition, explaining less than 1% of compos

"Pollen diets influence gut microbiota composition and colony development in native South American bumblebees".

Bumblebees are excellent pollinators sustaining ecosystems, however, their populations are declining due to land-use changes, lack of food resources, and pathogen-induced diseases. The gut microbiota is central to animal health, influencing nutrition and defense. We examined how pollen diet affects colony development, pathogen presence, and gut microbiota in two native South American bumblebee species, Bombus pauloensis and B. bellicosus. In B. pauloensis, monofloral pollen from Eucalyptus grandis increased worker body mass and showed a slight reduction in developmental time compared to polyfl

Do nectary morphology, anatomy, and nectar production differ between two Salvia taxa with contrasting floral traits and floral visitor assemblages?

Floral nectaries are specialized structures that secrete nectar, a key floral reward mediating plant-pollinator interactions. Although floral morphology and nectar traits have been moderately studied in Salvia, the detailed structure and anatomy of nectaries remain less explored, limiting our understanding of their diversity and functional variation. This study compares the nectary accessibility, morphology, anatomy, and nectar production of two Salvia taxa with different floral traits and floral visitor assemblages: S. uliginosa and the the sterile hybrid cultivar S. 'Amistad'. Both possess a

Pyrethroids and Nectar Toxins Have Subtle Effects on the Motor Function, Grooming and Wing Fanning Behaviour of Honeybees (Apis mellifera).

Sodium channels, found ubiquitously in animal muscle cells and neurons, are one of the main target sites of many naturally-occurring, insecticidal plant compounds and agricultural pesticides. Pyrethroids, derived from compounds found only in the Asteraceae, are particularly toxic to insects and have been successfully used as pesticides including on flowering crops that are visited by pollinators. Pyrethrins, from which they were derived, occur naturally in the nectar of some flowering plant species. We know relatively little about how such compounds--i.e., compounds that target sodium channels

In the battle of survival: transcriptome analysis of hypopharyngeal gland of the Apis mellifera under temperature-stress.

BACKGROUND: Temperature is one of the essential abiotic factors required for honey bee survival and pollination. Apart from its role as a major contributor to colony collapse disorder (CCD), it also affects honey bee physiology and behavior. Temperature-stress induces differential expression of genes related to protein synthesis and metabolic regulation, correlating with impaired gland function. This phenomenon has been confirmed in mandibular glands (MGs), but not in Hypopharyngeal glands (HGs), potentially affecting larval nutrition. RNA-seq analysis was performed using HGs tissue at low (23

Mating behavior and reproductive morphology predict macroevolution of sex allocation in hermaphroditic flatworms.

BACKGROUND: Sex allocation is the distribution of resources to male or female reproduction. In hermaphrodites, this concerns an individual's resource allocation to, for example, the production of male or female gametes. Macroevolutionary studies across hermaphroditic plants have revealed that the self-pollination rate and the pollination mode are strong predictors of sex allocation. Consequently, we expect similar factors such as the selfing rate and aspects of the reproductive biology, like the mating behaviour and the intensity of postcopulatory sexual selection, to predict sex allocation in

A Review on Cyanidin-3-O-glucoside Antioxidant Activity, Food Technology Applications and Therapeutic Uses.

Anthocyanins are plant derived biomolecules that play roles in pollination and protection against ultraviolet light (UV) radiation, as well as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS, respectively). Cyanidin 3-O-glucoside (C3G), a common anthocyanin in the diet, exhibits antioxidant capacity that depends on its chemical structure, and external factors such as pH and temperature; technologically, the extraction processes also affect the anthocyanins stability. This systematic review was prepared following the PRISMA guidelines (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta

MicroRNA156-SPL13B Module Induces Parthenocarpy Through the Gibberellin Pathway.

Fruit development typically follows pollination and fertilisation. However, parthenocarpy, the formation of seedless fruits, represents an alternative pathway. The fruit that grows from the ovary under unpollinated and/or unfertilised conditions is termed parthenocarpic. This trait is not only desirable to consumers but also contributes to yield stability under adverse environmental conditions. In this study, we demonstrate that overexpression of miR156h regulates parthenocarpy under unpollinated conditions via a gibberellic acid (GA)-dependent pathway. MdSPL13B was found to be involved in Mdm

Siblicide between fertilized and unfertilized ovaries within the maize ear.

Evolutionarily, plants overproduce ovaries but selectively eliminate those inferiors to ensure competitive offspring to set. This sibling rivalry, reducing grain number, is detrimental agronomically. However, the interaction between early-fertilized and unfertilized ovaries in sequentially-pollinated panicles is unclear. Here, we fertilized the ovaries on half rows of maize ear (HP) while keeping the rest unfertilized to investigate their interaction. HP reduced the growth of unfertilized ovaries while promoting fertilized ovary (grain) development. 13C-isotope labeling of grains led to isotop

Genetic interactions and natural variation underlying S-RNase-independent unilateral incompatibility in Solanum.

Pistils of self-incompatible (SI) species/populations typically reject pollen of related self-compatible (SC) species/populations, but not vice versa, a pattern known as unilateral incompatibility (UI). UI is complex and includes both S-RNase-dependent and S-RNase-independent mechanisms. Pistils of Solanum pennellii LA0716 (SC, no S-RNase) reject pollen of cultivated tomato, Solanum lycopersicum (SC); UI in this system involves the expression of ornithine decarboxylase2 (ODC2) and HT-A/-B genes in the pistil, and farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase2 (FPS2), ui6.2, and ui12.2 in pollen. We show tha

Linking genomic variation to floral trait adaptation across species boundaries.

Flowers are highly diverse in shape, scent, and colour and may differ strikingly even among closely related species. Floral traits experience correlational selection favouring trait combinations that maximise plant reproduction, leading to outstanding questions on how floral trait divergence evolves in closely related species. In this review, we take a quantitative genetic perspective and ask whether and how the genetic architecture of floral trait divergence depends on adaptation to specific pollination systems and how it informs on the dynamics of the assembly of floral traits during diverge

Competing Hexagonal and Square Lattices on a Spherical Surface.

The structural properties of packed soft-core particles provide a platform to understand the cross-pollinated physical concepts in solid-state and soft-matter physics. Confined on a spherical surface, the traditional differential geometry also dictates the overall defect properties in otherwise regular crystal lattices. Using molecular dynamics simulation of the Hertzian model as a tool, we report here the emergence of new types of disclination patterns: domain and counter-domain defects, when hexagonal and square patterns coexist. A new angle is presented to understand the incompatibility bet

Genotypic Responses in Maize Germination Under Water and Thermal Stresses.

Water stress reduces germination and seedling emergence by compromising the metabolic activity of seeds. Associated with this, extreme thermal events have intensified, and temperatures above 30 °C can significantly reduce maize yield. In this scenario, the selection of tolerant genotypes is essential. This study evaluated the germination potential of 22 maize genotypes, including open-pollinated genotypes and commercial varieties. Seeds were characterized by moisture content, thousand-seed weight, germination, and emergence in the field. Subsequently, they were subjected to thermal stress of 5

Effects of nitrogen on floral scent and other reproductive traits in two closely related species of Ipomopsis and their hybrids.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Floral traits are key mediators of plant-pollinator interactions, and can be altered through changes in resources to plants. Although several studies have tested how nitrogen affects visual traits, only a few have examined nitrogen effects on floral scent, and to our knowledge, none have evaluated the effect of nitrogen addition on nitrogenous volatile compounds. We test how nitrogen availability influences floral morphology, nectar traits, display size, and floral scent (total emissions and individual compounds) during the day and night, with a special focus on a nitrogen

Molecular identification of Hymenopteran insects collected by using Malaise traps from Hazarganji Chiltan National Park Quetta, Pakistan.

The order Hymenoptera holds great significance for humans, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions, due to its role as a pollinator of wild and cultivated flowering plants, parasites of destructive insects and honey producers. Despite this importance, limited attention has been given to the genetic diversity and molecular identification of Hymenopteran insects in most protected areas. This study provides insights into the first DNA barcode of Hymenopteran insects collected from Hazarganji Chiltan National Park (HCNP) and contributes to the global reference library of DNA barcodes. Variation in the physiological response of adult worker bees of different ages (Apis mellifera L.) to pyraclostrobin stress.

The social division of labor within the honeybee colony is closely related to the age of the bees, and the age structure is essential to the development and survival of the colony. Differences in tolerance to pesticides and other external stresses among worker bees of different ages may be related to their social division of labor and corresponding physiological states. Pyraclostrobin was widely used to control the fungal diseases of nectar and pollen plants, though it was not friend to honey bees and other pollinators. This work aimed to determine the effects of field recommended concentratio

Maize pollen is an important allergen in occupationally exposed workers.

BACKGROUND: The work- or environmental-related type I sensitization to maize pollen is hardly investigated. We sought to determine the prevalence of sensitization to maize pollen among exposed workers and to identify the eliciting allergens. METHODS: In July 2010, 8 out of 11 subjects were examined who were repeatedly exposed to maize pollen by pollinating maize during their work in a biological research department. All 8 filled in a questionnaire and underwent skin prick testing (SPT) and immune-specific analyses. RESULTS: 5 out of the 8 exposed subjects had repeatedly suffered for at least

High levels of miticides and agrochemicals in North American apiaries: implications for honey bee health.

BACKGROUND: Recent declines in honey bees for crop pollination threaten fruit, nut, vegetable and seed production in the United States. A broad survey of pesticide residues was conducted on samples from migratory and other beekeepers across 23 states, one Canadian province and several agricultural cropping systems during the 2007-08 growing seasons. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We have used LC/MS-MS and GC/MS to analyze bees and hive matrices for pesticide residues utilizing a modified QuEChERS method. We have found 121 different pesticides and metabolites within 887 wax, pollen, bee and a

Macroevolutionary patterns in marine hermaphroditism.

Most plants and many animals are hermaphroditic; whether the same forces are responsible for hermaphroditism in both groups is unclear. The well-established drivers of hermaphroditism in plants (e.g., seed dispersal potential, pollination mode) have analogues in animals (e.g., larval dispersal potential, fertilization mode), allowing us to test the generality of the proposed drivers of hermaphroditism across both groups. Here, we test these theories for 1153 species of marine invertebrates, from three phyla. Species with either internal fertilization, restricted offspring dispersal, or small b

Smart plants: memory and communication without brains.

The immobility of plants is consistent with their principal function: collecting light to provide photosynthetic substrate for the biological system. Their immobility does impose limitations on some basic requirements, such as the need for pollination, for seed dispersal, and for protection against herbivores. Meeting these 3 needs will logically necessitate some ability for plant communication - at least a capability for beneficial adaptive behavior. Three types of plant behavior provide evidence of memory and communication abilities: a capability for memory, a capability for measuring time,
