Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute, demyelinating, immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy, often triggered by an infection. It is the most common cause of acute flaccid areflexic paralysis in children. Although generally associated with infections, this article presents a rare case with a rapid onset, where GBS was revealed following a context of head trauma. A 2.5-year-old boy, with no significant medical history, was admitted to the intensive care unit for severe acute respiratory distress, occurring 48 hours after a head trauma. Clinical examination revealed severe dyspnea without fe…

BACKGROUND: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), is a common post-infectious polyradiculoneuropathy worldwide. The commonest implicated causative organism the world over is Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni). This study was carried out to determine the relationship between C. jejuni infection and GBS in an Indian setting.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study was carried out on a cohort of 50 patients with GBS who were treated in a tertiary care hospital in India. Based on electrophysiological findings the patients were divided into various subtypes. Serology for C. jejuni (Immunoglogulin G, …

INTRODUCTION: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy and a leading cause of acute flaccid paralysis. Though uncommon, it carries substantial morbidity and mortality. Indian prospective data remain limited, prompting this study to evaluate clinical patterns, complications, and prognostic determinants in a tertiary care cohort.
STUDY: This prospective observational study was conducted at Madras Medical College, Chennai, between May 2024 and May 2025. Ninety consecutive patients aged 12 years and above fulfilling the Asbury and Cornblath criteria for GBS…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We hypothesized that combining intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) and intravenous methylprednisolone (IVMP) leads to more frequent remission compared with IVIg alone while maintaining the fast efficacy of IVIg. In this uncontrolled pilot study, we evaluated remission, rate of improvement and safety in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy receiving induction treatment with combined IVIg and IVMP.
METHODS: Consecutive treatment-naive patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy were treated with IVIg infusions,…

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) represents a group of acute immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathies that is usually characterized by symmetrical limb weakness and areflexia. GBS can also lead to atypical clinical findings, which may lead to confusion and errors in the diagnosis. In this report, we describe a case of Guillain-Barré syndrome in a 7-year-old child who presented with neck stiffness, headache and vomiting mimicking acute meningoencephalitis, arthritis and myositis. Symptoms of ascending paralysis developed subsequently. Clearly, the atypical presentation of GBS is a significant dile

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an acute immune-mediated progressive predominantly motor symmetric polyradiculoneuropathy which causes demyelination and leads to weakness, ataxia and areflexia. There are a variety of forms of the syndrome; and despite being the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis in children, it has a low incidence under 18 years old, and it is even rarer in children less than 2 years of age. Very few cases have been reported under 12 months of age. We describe a case of an 11-month-old male infant presenting with weakness and inability to ambulate who was diagnosed …

Mucormycosis, an angioinvasive infection is caused by the ubiquitous filamentous fungi of the order Mucorales and class Mucormycetes. Reports of this disease are on the rise over the past few decades. Rhino-oculo-Cerebral presentation associated with uncontrolled diabetes is the predominant characteristic of this entity. We report here a case of rhinooculocerebral mucormycosis (ROCM) due to Apophysomyces elegans (A. elegans) in a 45-year-old diabetic lady with background illness of hypothyroidism and polyradiculoneuropathy. Though this condition is usually managed with surgical debridement of …

Diaphragmatic dysfunction can arise from various factors, and Guillain-Barre syndrome, characterized by acute inflammatory polyradiculoneuropathy, is one such cause that may result in respiratory failure due to diaphragmatic paralysis. Prompt recognition and timely intervention, including airway protection and addressing the underlying pathology, are crucial for achieving optimal patient outcomes. Point-of-care ultrasound, specifically utilizing the M-mode function, can be employed for individuals displaying symptoms of diaphragmatic paralysis. This diagnostic approach is uncomplicated an effe…

Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an acute polyradiculoneuropathy, caused by dysregulated immune response following an infectious or noninfectious event. Although cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems are commonly involved secondary to neuromuscular paralysis, renal manifestations are rare. Acute kidney injury (AKI) can develop in GBS due to acute tubular necrosis secondary to dysautonomia. Minimal change nephrotic syndrome in GBS may be due to T-cell dysregulation and cytokine release attributed to molecular mimicry. Here, we report the case of GBS with simultaneously devel…

Transverse myelitis is one of the causes of acute transverse myelopathy; three main categories are described in the differential diagnosis of transverse myelitis: demyelination (multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica), infections (herpes zoster and herpes simplex virus), and some autoimmune connective tissue disorders (systemic lupus erythematosus, vasculitis). The authors present a clinical case of a 33-year-old patient with transverse myelitis occurring in the course of acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (Guillain-Barré syndrome). The patient's medical history was nota…

We report an HIV patient aged 38 years with acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy subtype of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) as the only manifestation of seroconversion and worsening of GBS being the harbinger of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS). To date, only 5 cases of GBS during IRIS are reported. They manifested either during the third week or later after starting highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Our patient witnessed worsening weakness by fifth day after starting HAART, even before the occurrence of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia, cautionin…

Hepatitis E is the most common cause of hepatitis worldwide. While originally considered a disease of developing countries, it is increasingly recognised in developed countries, probably related to contaminated pork meat, and where infection is often asymptomatic. However, several non-liver manifestations have become apparent, the most important of which are neurological, including Guillain-Barré syndrome (acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP)), neuralgic amyotrophy and meningoencephalitis. We recommend testing all patients with AIDP and neuralgic amyotrophy for hepati…

Intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) have been used mainly as a supplement therapy in hypogammglobulinemia patients. IVIG have been proved effective in treating TTP and recently they have been used in treating many autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. In neurologic diseases IVIG have immunomodulating features dependent on IgG Fc-fragment. Which diseases benefit from the use of IVIG was the find from controlled clinical trials in accordance with Evidence Based Medicine. IVIG have been proved effective in Guillaine-Barre syndrom, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy, miasteni…
