Con-specific neighbours may enhance compensation capacity in an invasive plant.

Facilitation, both by inter- and intra-specific neighbours, is known to be an important process in structuring plant communities. However, only a small number of experiments have been reported on facilitation in plant invasions, especially between invasive con-specific individuals. Here, we focus on how con-specific neighbours of the invasive alien plant alligator weed affect the tolerance of alligator weed to herbivory by the introduced biological control agent, Agasicles hygrophila. We conducted greenhouse and garden experiments in which invasive plant density and herbivory intensity (artifi

Seed shadow, seedling recruitment, and spatial distribution of Buchenavia capitata (Combretaceae) in a fragment of the Brazilian Atlantic forest.

Here we describe the seed shadow, seedling recruitment, ontogenetic structure and spatial distribution of Buchenavia capitata (an emergent canopy tree) in a 380-ha fragment of the Atlantic forest in northeast Brazil. In particular, we examine seed distribution around 10 parental trees and both seedling recruitment and mortality, during an 18 month period beneath and around parental trees. Moreover, we describe: (1) B. capitata occurrence within treefall gaps; (2) population structure in terms of ontogenetic stages for the whole site; and (3) spatial distribution of adults within an area of 51

Evaluation of three methods to control Bulinus truncatus, the intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium in an irrigation scheme, Tessaout-Amont, Morocco.

In Morocco, the implementation of new irrigation schemes resulted in the introduction of schistosomiasis haematobium to new areas. Canal structures (especially syphon boxes) were found to be favourable habitats for Bulinus truncatus and they constitute important transmission sites. Three methods for snail control in these syphon boxes were assessed in the Tessaout-Amont irrigation scheme. Molluscicide (niclosamide) application resulted in a pronounced reduction in the snail population density, but snails started to recolonise the sites a few months later. Regular brushing of the inner sides of…

[Spatial distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) and Lutzomyia cruzi (Mangabeira, 1938) in the State of Mato Grosso].

Visceral leishmaniasis is currently considered an emergent and reemergent disease, in agricultural and urban zones, both in domestic and peridomestic areas. The objective of this work was to verify the spatial distribution of Lutzomyia longipalpis and Lutzomyia cruzi in Mato Grosso State. Data from 1996 to 2004 was collected by the Entomology Laboratory, whose captures were carried with a CDC light trap. Sixty-eight of the 139 cities in the state have been studied. Lutzomyia longipalpis and Lutzomyia cruzi occurred in 23 and 22 cities, respectively. The results demonstrate the extensive occurr

[Population dynamics and infestation with Bulinus globosus in a Sudan-Sahelien zone of Cameroon].

The population dynamics of Bulinus globosus was followed at seasonal and perennial habitats in three villages in the Extreme North Province, … of larger snails 3 to 6 weeks later suggests a die off of the founding population. In general, the population density increases modestly during the rainy season and then rapidly declines after torrential rains have ended in September or October. Adults are again dominate just before the habitats dry up. In seasonal streams, population densities fluctuate dramatical …

Florida scrub-jay genomes across space and time reveal impacts of population decline and reduced gene flow.

Whole-genome sequencing is proving to be highly informative about the past demography of free-living populations, and in the context of endangered species, it can provide a quantification of the genetic risk posed by reduced genetic diversity and inbreeding. Prior to 1920, the Florida scrub-jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) was more numerous across peninsular Florida, but with the expansion of agriculture and human habitation, its population has declined by 95%, resulting in fragmentation into semi-isolated subpopulations. By sequencing 241 individuals sampled from five different regions and acros

Abundance of the vector Aedes aegypti in urban and rural areas in Managua, Nicaragua.

BACKGROUND: Ae. aegypti is the primary vector of dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever viruses, traditionally associated with urban environments. However, its presence and abundance in rural settings remain understudied. This study compares Ae. aegypti populations between rural and urban communities in Managua, Nicaragua, across different seasons over multiple years. METHODS: Entomological surveys were conducted in 500 randomly selected houses (250 rural, 250 urban) during the rainy and dry seasons of 2022 and 2023. Immature mosquitoes were collected from water-holding containers, and a

Socioeconomic predictors of vulnerability to flood-induced displacement.

Floods displace an average of 12 million people every year, and are responsible for 54% of all disaster-induced displacements. Displacement … both between and within countries. A random forest regression shows that infant mortality rate and population density are among the most important predictors of displacement vulnerability at national level and within countries, respectively, highlighting the vulnerability of low-income and marginalized populations and of rural communities. Our results indicate that …

Dynamic modeling of female neutering interventions for free-roaming dog population management in an urban setting of southeastern Iran.

Understanding dynamics of free-roaming dog (FRD) population is critical for planning and implementation of dog population management programs. FRD population size estimation as well as dynamic modeling of dog population under different female dog neutering interventions were investigated in order to determine the most appropriate animal birth control approach. We performed population size estimate of dogs using sight-resight surveys by photography in a randomly selected 25 blocks of the city and all the suburbs of greater Kerman area. Main demographic features were characterized and the dog de

Dispersal Capacity Rather Than Shared Environmental Constraints Determines Taxon-Specific Demographic Dynamics in an Alpine Lake Network.

Networks of alpine lakes and ponds support unique assemblages of aquatic organisms and provide an ideal biogeographical setting for studying the evolutionary, ecological and demographic outcomes of population fragmentation. In this study, we integrate genomic, morphological and community-level data within a comparative multi-taxon framework to investigate genetic connectivity, demographic trajectories and eco-evolutionary dynamics in four diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae) representative of the macroinvertebrate assemblages inhabiting high altitude lakes in the Sierra Nevada massif, south

Distribution of phlebotomine fauna (Diptera: Psychodidae) across an urban-rural gradient in an area of endemic visceral leishmaniasis in northern Brazil.

The number of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) cases has increased over the past 10 years in Brazil, especially in the North and Northeast regions of the country. The aim of this study was to evaluate the urbanisation of VL vectors in Barcarena, Pará, an area in northern Brazil where VL is endemic. Sandflies were captured using Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light traps along an urban-rural gradient. The CDC traps were installed inside hen houses at a height of 150 cm. A total of 5,089 sandflies were collected and 11 species were identified. The predominant species was Lutzomyia longipalpis (rat

Meningococcal meningitis in Mali: a long-term study of persistence and spread.

OBJECTIVES: Meningococcal meningitis (MM) is still a huge threat in the African meningitis belt. To fight against epidemics, a strengthened health information system, based upon weekly collected data, was set up in Mali. We aimed to study the spatio-temporal dynamics of MM in this country between 1992 and 2003. METHODS: We were first interested in the impact of population size on the disease persistence. We then used cross-correlation analysis to study the spread of the disease on three different spatial scales, i.e., inter-region (global) and inter-district and intra-district (local) levels.

The cost of conflict in aphid societies.

Most social aphids are found within plant galls, inside of which clonally-derived family groups feed, and specialized larval castes forego reproduction and perform various cooperative tasks, including group defence. When unrelated aphids move between clones, conditions are ripe for conflict because galls and cooperative defence are shared resources that are vulnerable to exploitation. A key unknown is whether conflict is costly in aphid social groups. We show that diversity within groups is negatively correlated with performance in the North American social aphid, Pemphigus obesinymphae. A sub

The population dynamics of Fiorinia fioriniae (Targioni) (Homoptera: Diaspididae) and factors affecting its seasonal abundance in Egypt.

Fiorinia fioriniae (Targioni) was observed attacking Callistemon lanceolatus at the Experimental Farm of the Agricultural Research Station and Ruscus hypoglossum at Antoniades park in Alexandria Governorate; Egypt. The infestation rate on Ruscus hypoglossum, reached its maximum (98.0%) during autumn months, while the minimum rate 68.3%, was recorded during summer months. The fluctuating population density of F. fioriniae showed three distinct peaks. The first peak of 731.0 individuals/10 branches was recorded in October 1998, the second (734.1) in December 1998, and the third, (506.9) in April…

Effects of onchoceriasis on settlement in the Middle Hawal Valley, Nigeria.

Eight lowland villages in which onchocerciasis is hyperendemic are compared with two upland (low prevalence) control villages in the middle Hawal valley, Nigeria. Detailed demographic data from the hyperendemic villages and from the control villages are analysed. The population was found to be more mobile in the lowland zone, which is also the zone of village desertion. Variables influencing the probability of village abandonment are discussed. It is suggested that onchocerciasis is only a part of a complex of desertion, though probably the most important single element. Particularly in associ

Trends and weather events in long-term densities of an insular lizard.

Lizard populations have been traditionally considered unusually stable. However, there are very few examples to verify this hypothesis on long-term studied populations. Over almost four decades, we have obtained long time series of the abundance of Lilford's Wall Lizard, Podarcis lilfordi, from all known populations of Menorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Lizard densities were estimated from line transects data using N-mixture models. Irregular time series were then checked for the presence or absence of a monotonic trend and for density dependence of each population. With multiple regression mo
