Aging in Nigeria: A Growing Population of Older Adults Requires the Implementation of National Aging Policies.

While the continent of Africa currently has the lowest share of adults aged 60 and older in its population among all world regions, the total number of older Africans is projected to triple between 2020 and 2050. Nigeria-Africa's leading economy and most populated country-has the highest number of older people in the continent and the 19th highest across the globe, with the population of Nigerians aged 65 and older projected to nearly triple by 2050. However, the increase in older Nigerians is occurring against the backdrop of extreme poverty, unsolved development problems, socioeconomic inequ

Forecasting the Effects of Fertility Control on Overabundant Ungulates: White-Tailed Deer in the National Capital Region.

Overabundant populations of ungulates have caused environmental degradation and loss of biological diversity in ecosystems throughout the world. Culling or regulated harvest is often used to control overabundant species. These methods are difficult to implement in national parks, other types of conservation reserves, or in residential areas where public hunting may be forbidden by policy. As a result, fertility control has been recommended as a non-lethal alternative for regulating ungulate populations. We evaluate this alternative using white-tailed deer in national parks in the vicinity of W

A more diversified America: state and local population changes, 1990-1997.

Recently, the U.S. Bureau of the Census released state and county population estimates with age, gender, race and Hispanic origin detail for 1990-1997. These estimates illustrate the changing demographics of the United States. The 1997 state population estimates show that both Texas and Georgia experienced notable population growth since 1990. Texas replaced New York as the second largest state; Georgia bumped North Carolina from the list of top 10 most populous states to become the state with the 10th largest population. In both Texas and Georgia, migration flows have contributed to the popul…

Ocular needs in Africa: increasing priorities and shrinking resources.

Current demands for ophthalmic treatment services in Africa far outstrip available resources, especially in terms of ophthalmic surgeons. Wi … oney needed to expand the corps of specially trained health workers at a rate matching the expected population growth rate is non-existent. About 1% of the African population is blind. The three major causes are cataract, trachoma and glaucoma. These involve specific age groups of the population. Cataract, which causes roughly 40% of all blindness, mostly affects t …

Population ecology of preimaginal Culex tarsalis (Diptera: Culicidae) in Kern County, California.

The effects of abiotic and biotic mortality factors on preimaginal survivorship and the production of adults were investigated for populations of Culex tarsalis Coquillett at a stable foothill breeding site during 1985 and at seven ephemeral breeding sites during 1986. Female abundance was correlated temporally with larval abundance and spatially with first instar to adult survivorship. Catastrophic events, such as fluctuations in water level and pollution, drastically reduced larval and pupal abundance. Under relatively stable conditions, the effect of natural mortality factors was estimated

Resistance to Aphis glycines (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in various soybean lines under controlled laboratory conditions.

The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), a pest of soybean, Glycine max (L.) Merr., native to Asia, has recently become a principal pest of this crop in many areas of North America. Insecticides are currently used to manage A. glycines, but host plant resistance is a potential alternative management tool. Tests were conducted to determine resistance to A. glycines among soybean lines. 'Cobb,' 'Tie-feng 8,' and 'Jackson' were resistant to population growth of A. glycines compared with 'Cook' and '91B91,' a susceptible control. Antibiosis was evident in Cobb, Jackson, …

Association of neutering with health and welfare of urban free-roaming cat population in Israel, during 2012-2014.

'Trap-Neutering by gonadectomy-Return' (TNR) is currently becoming an accepted method for managing free-roaming cat (FRC) populations, especially in human habitation. However, data regarding its impact on cat welfare are limited. In order to determine the demographic risk factors for FRC morbidity, we followed FRC populations in the city of Rishon LeZion during 2012-2014. Their age status (kitten/adult), contraceptive status (neutered/intact), sex, body-condition-scoring (BCS 1-5/5; 1= emaciation, 5= obesity), skin lesions, and external signs of disabilities and injuries were recorded and anal

Land use change and rodenticide exposure trump climate change as the biggest stressors to San Joaquin kit fox.

Animal and plant species often face multiple threats simultaneously. We explored the relative impact of three major threats on populations o … ccommodated within existing urban areas, and 17% under a business-as-usual scenario in which future population growth increases the developed area around urban centers. Plausible scenarios for exposure to pesticides suggest a reduction in kit fox populations by approximately 13%. By contrast, climate change has the potential to ameliorate some of these impacts. Cli …

Methyl salicylate attracts natural enemies and reduces populations of soybean aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in soybean agroecosystems.

Methyl salicylate, an herbivore-induced plant volatile, has been shown to attract natural enemies and affect herbivore behavior. In this study, methyl salicylate was examined for its attractiveness to natural enemies of the soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and for its direct effects on soybean aphid population growth rates. Methyl salicylate lures were deployed in plots within organic soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] fields. Sticky card traps adjacent to and 1.5 m from the lure measured the relative abundance of natural enemies, and soybean aphid populations were…

Stray animal populations and public health in the South Mediterranean and the Middle East regions.

Uncontrolled urban growth in South Mediterranean and the Middle East regions involves city dwellers and stray animals (mainly dogs and cats) creating a dense and downgraded environment, in which irregular street garbage collection disposes sufficient food for survival and proliferation of stray animals. Under such conditions serious public health hazards are expected due to the increase of animal bites, the multiplication of insects and rodents vectors of different viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic agents to which humans are exposed. Traditional national stray animal eradication programs

Dog overpopulation and diagnosis of intestinal parasites on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos 2016.

Dog overpopulation and diseases are hazards to native island species and humans on the Galapagos. The main objective of the study reported here was to estimate the observed human:dog ratio on Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos in September 2016. In addition, dog demographic data were used to model the expected annual dog population growth in the next 10 years. A secondary objective was to measure the burden of dogs infected with intestinal parasites. The observed human:dog ratio was 964:202 (or 4.77:1), which extrapolates to 3290 dogs; an increase of 31% in the dog population on Santa Cruz from 2014…

Negative interaction between twospotted spider mites and aphids mediated by feeding damage and honeydew.

Among the herbivorous arthropods that feed on strawberry, the most important are the two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch, and several species of aphids. Mites and aphids belong to different guilds that coexist in the field and feed on the undersides of strawberry leaflets. However, the occurrence of large numbers of individuals of both species on the same leaflet is rarely recorded. We hypothesize that negative interactions between TSSM and aphids explain the intraplant distribution of these herbivores. We first examined the spatial coincidence of both herbivores in the fi
