Electrophysiological studies were carried out on single perfused cortical and medullary collecting ducts to define the potassium and sodium transport properties of their apical and basolateral cell membranes. In addition, the effects of chronic mineralocorticoid hormone treatment on the mechanism of transport of potassium ions were evaluated. Studies included the measurement of transepithelial and cell potentials, and the resistance of individual cell membranes. The apical cell membrane of principal cells of the cortical collecting duct is characterized by separate potassium and sodium conduct

In 1992, a simple and sensitive assay for detecting DNA-protein crosslinks was developed [1]. In an effort to facilitate the greater use of the assay, a number of studies were conducted to evaluate its reliability and reproducibility. During this work, the assay was used to assess whether various metals and other compounds could induce crosslinks in cultured human lymphocytes (Epstein-Barr virus-transformed Burkitt's Lymphoma cell line). Potassium permanganate, mercury chloride, lead nitrate, magnesium perchlorate, aluminum chloride, and cadmium chloride did not induce DNA-protein crosslinks a

Supplementation of potassium alone and in combination with magnesium was compared in 10 patients with chronic compensated heart failure receiving hydrochlorothiazide 50 mg twice daily for the whole trial. After a 3-week run-in period, the patients were randomized to receive active supplementation for 6 weeks in a double-blind cross-over manner. A 3-week wash-out period was kept in between. Addition of 2 g potassium chloride daily (27 mmol K+) did not efficiently correct the serum potassium concentration. After the combined supplementation of 2 g potassium and 1 g magnesium (27 mmol K+ and 17 m…

Ewes with surgically prepared obstruction of the duodenum were used as a model in the study of ruminant metabolic alkalosis and paradoxical aciduria. Metabolic alkalosis occurred as a result of irreversible chloride loss, presumably into the abomasum and forestomachs. Analysis of data on serum and urinary electrolye concentrations provided limited support for the explanation of paradoxical aciduria in terms of chloride and potassium deficiencies. The accumulation undetermined anions in the serum indicated that the decreased urinary pH was due to the excretion of titratable acid.

Antenatal Bartter syndrome typically presents with marked fetal polyuria that leads to polyhydramnios and premature delivery. In our case, polyhydramnios was detected at 26 weeks of gestation and amniotic fluid chloride level was high. Serial amnion-drains were performed. During indomethacine treatment, fetal bradycardia developed. The mother was given daily oral potassium to maintain normal serum level and prevent fetal arrhythmias. After birth, hypokalaemic alkalosis, low chloride, hyper-reninemia and hyperaldosteronemia were detected.

Alkaline cleaning products are a cause of serious esophageal injury. Over time, legislation has diminished the concentration of many such non-industrial solutions and solids; however several products presently do not list either the pH or relative concentrations of alkaline constituents. This study measures the pHs of several non-industrial cleaning products containing either ammonium chloride, sodium hydroxide, or potassium hydroxide. Three pH measurements were performed on each of 10 non-industrial alkaline cleaning products (eight liquid, two solid). Two 0.1% ammonium chloride solutions had

The high levels of alkali chloride and soluble metal salts present in MSWI fly ash is worth noting for their impact on the environment. In addition, the recycling or reuse of fly ash has become an issue because of limited landfill space. The chloride content in fly ash limits its application as basis for construction materials. Water-soluble chlorides such as potassium chloride (KCl), sodium chloride (NaCl), and calcium chloride hydrate (CaCl(2) · 2H(2)O) in fly ash are easily washed away. However, calcium chloride hydroxide (Ca(OH)Cl) might not be easy to leach away at room temperature. The r…

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 26-year-old woman presented with fatigue, muscle cramps and weakness. Since the age of 8 years she had moderate hypokalemia of unknown origin that was confirmed on multiple occasions. There was no family history of disease.
INVESTIGATIONS: Laboratory tests showed moderate to severe hypokalemia with a serum potassium concentration of 2.7 to 3.0 mmol/l, hypomagnesemia, metabolic alkalosis and pronounced stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Despite normal serum calcium levels, urinary calcium excretion was below the detection threshold. Increa

An in vivo study of skeletal muscle paralysis induced by intravenous barium chloride has been made in curarized and non-curarized rats. The influence of potassium and calcium chlorides, propranolol, ouabain, and prior adrenalectomy on the paralysis has also been studied. Paralysis is found to be due to a direct effect on skeletal muscle, and to correlate well with the development of hypokalaemia. Possible mechanisms of action of barium are discussed, and attention is drawn to the similarity between barium poisoning and hypokalaemic familial periodic paralysis.

In this retrospective study, patch test results of 542 patients (303 female and 239 male), referred to our clinic between June 1996 and July 1999, were evaluated. All patients were patch tested with 32 allergens of an extended European standard series, 140 patients were tested with supplemental series, and 246 patients with their own substances. 280 (51.7%) patients had 1 or more positive results but allergic contact dermatitis, according to clinical relevance, was diagnosed in only 190 (67.9%) of these. Nickel sulfate was the most frequent sensitizer (19.1%), followed by potassium dichromate

Intestinal handling of water and electrolytes and motility were monitored in conscious dogs with chronic 25-cm Thiry-Vella loops of proximal jejunum. Absorption/secretion was quantitated using a neutral isosmotic perfusate containing [14C]polyethylene glycol as a recovery marker. Under basal conditions the animals absorbed water, Na+ and Cl-, while there was no net action on K+. Intravenous serotonin infusion (30 micrograms/kg/min) increased circulating levels of serotonin to a mean of 1556 +/- 191 ng/ml within 15 min of the commencement of the infusion. The infusion induced a significant secr

I. Time has come to distinguish "Bartter syndrome" from "Bartter disease". The latter is an autosomal recessive renal tubulopathy which manifests itself mostly during infancy and childhood. II. Bartter disease is caused neither by a primary renal potassium loss nor by a primary renal hyperprostaglandinism. All evidence is in favor of a defect in the chloride pump located at the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop. III. The most severe expression of Bartter disease is its neonatal form which is characterized by polyhydramnios, premature delivery and a life threatening sodium chloride loss duri
