Skin grafts 1: theory, procedure and management of graft sites in the community.

The skin may not have the same dramatic appeal as many of the other organs, such as the heart; however, it plays a vital part in identifying each of us as a unique individual. When this protective outer barrier is damaged the consequences may be far reaching in both psychological and physical terms. Not all wounds require skin grafting - small, superficial wounds will heal by secondary intention and dressings. However, use of skin grafting to restore skin integrity for large surface wounds such as burns, reduces the risk of infection and enables the individual to resume normal daily activities

The physician survey on the post-concussion and whiplash syndromes.

BACKGROUND: The post-concussion syndrome (PCS) and whiplash syndrome (WS) have been controversial topics among physicians for many decades. There is little information available on the opinions and practices of physicians. METHODS: In June of 1992, we performed a national survey by mail of the four physician groups most commonly treating these problems. The number of respondents and response rates were as follows: family physicians, 118, 16%; neurologists, 100, 21%; neurosurgeons, 97, 23%; orthopedists, 82, 13%. The survey instrument contained items on demographics, definitions, causation, pr

Anti-seizure medication in Germany over 25 years: trends in prices and prescription patterns from national data from 2000 to 2024.

PURPOSE: To analyse trends in the prices and prescription volumes of anti-seizure medications (ASMs) in Germany from 2000 to 2024. METHOD: Data on prescription frequencies and costs per defined daily dose (DDD) were derived from annual prescription records (Arzneiverordnungs-Report). Gabapentoids such as gabapentin and pregabalin were excluded to avoid bias related to their common use for non-epilepsy indications. An interrupted time-series analysis (ITSA) using the Prais-Winsten approach was used to identify possible change points and consecutive effects on level and slope of ASM cost develo

Trends in general practitioner dispensing of thickeners in the NHS England, 2019-24.

INTRODUCTION: Oropharyngeal dysphagia is common and often results in aspiration. Thickeners are widely used to thicken liquids to slow the liquid bolus and prevent aspiration and aspiration pneumonia, despite multiple concerns about their use. To date, there is little data on prescribing/dispensing practices. This study aims to provide the first overview of thickener dispensing practices, serve as foundational material for parties interested in research, practice and policy making, and guide further work in this area. METHOD: We explored English general practitioner thickener dispensing pract

Development and Validation of Prescribing Appropriateness Criteria (PAC) for Sri Lankan Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Inappropriate prescribing in Sri Lankan older adults, contributes to adverse drug events, hospital admissions and increased healthcare expenditure. Although international tools exist to assess prescribing appropriateness in older adults, their direct application in Sri Lanka is limited by differences in clinical practices, resource constraints and variability in medicine availability. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop and validate country-specific prescription appropriateness criteria for Sri Lankan older adults, focusing on prevalent diseases. METHODS: A literature review was condu

Perspectives on chronic granulomatous disease: results of a clinician survey.

BACKGROUND: Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a primary immune deficiency characterized by neutrophils with an insufficient oxidative burst. Symptoms include infections and inflammatory manifestations affecting the lungs, lymph nodes, liver, bone, soft tissue, and other organs. Diagnostic and treatment approaches may vary between patients with X-linked CGD and patients with autosomal recessive CGD, depending on their age at diagnosis and the type and severity of their symptoms. Female carriers of X-linked CGD may also manifest symptoms of CGD that require tailored treatment and monitoring

Opioid and Benzodiazepine Co-Prescribing Trends from the Emergency Department from 2012 to 2019: A National Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its strongest safety warning ("Black Box Warning") for concomitant use of prescription opioids and benzodiazepines due to overdose deaths. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to look at trends of opioid and benzodiazepine co-prescribing in the emergency department (ED) using national data, because recent data are sparse. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of data collected by the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey between 2012 and 2019. Our primary outcome was to determine whether there was a trend in ED visi

Effect of a targeted quality improvement education on opioid prescribing.

BACKGROUND: The opioid epidemic is a serious social, economic and public health problem. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of individual institutional opioid prescriber training on prescriber adherence to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC's) guidelines for responsible opioid prescribing practices to treat acute pain. METHODS: Opioid prescribing data were collected from an academic medical centre and its associated outpatient clinics. A baseline for opioid prescribing practices was collected for 2 years and 2 months prior to the planned intervention. Depar

Evaluating the Impact of an mHealth Platform for Managing Acute Postoperative Dental Pain: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative dental pain is pervasive and can affect a patient's quality of life. Adopting a patient-centric approach to pain management involves having contemporaneous information about the patient's experience of pain and using it to personalize care. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we evaluated the use of a mobile health (mHealth) platform to collect pain-related patient-reported outcomes over 7 days after the patients underwent pain-inducing dental procedures; we then relayed the information to the dentist and determined its impact on the patient's pain experience. METHODS: The st

Association Between Initial Opioid Prescription Duration and 30-Day Risk of Receiving Repeat Opioid Among Children.

OBJECTIVE: Our study evaluated the association between initial opioid prescription duration and receipt of a repeat opioid prescription in children. METHODS: Eligible individuals were children between 1 and 17 years of age who enrolled in a Medicaid Managed Care plan and filled an incident opioid prescription during 2013 to 2018. An incident prescription was defined as receipt of an opioid analgesic without a prior use for 12 months. A repeat opioid prescription was defined as receipt of a subsequent opioid prescription within 30 days since the end of incident opioid prescription. A hierarchi
