The preventable burden of breast cancers for premenopausal and postmenopausal women in Australia: A pooled cohort study.

Estimates of the future breast cancer burden preventable through modifications to current behaviours are lacking. We assessed the effect of individual and joint behaviour modifications on breast cancer burden for premenopausal and postmenopausal Australian women, and whether effects differed between population subgroups. We linked pooled data from six Australian cohort studies (n = 214,536) to national cancer and death registries, and estimated the strength of the associations between behaviours causally related to cancer incidence and death using adjusted proportional hazards models. We estim

Estrogen-Containing Oral Contraceptives Are Associated With Polycystic Liver Disease Severity in Premenopausal Patients.

The association between estrogen-containing oral contraceptives and history of pregnancies with disease severity in women with polycystic liver disease (PLD) is unclear. We performed a cross-sectional cohort study to assess this association by selecting female patients with PLD of which imaging was available prior to any liver volume-reducing therapy. Patients received a questionnaire to collect detailed information on estrogen use and pregnancies. Preplanned subgroup analyses were performed on premenopausal and postmenopausal patients. The questionnaire was returned by 287 of 360 selected pat

An opinion on the benefits of concomitant oral contraceptive therapy in premenopausal women treated with oral anticoagulants.

Women who are receiving an oral anticoagulant appear to be at higher risk of developing bleeding-related adverse events than men. Physiological bleeding related to the ovulatory cycle poses an ongoing risk for bleeding complications during anticoagulant therapy. Abnormal uterine bleeding and hemorrhagic ovarian cysts are risks specific to women of reproductive age who are treated with anticoagulants. The use of combined oral contraceptives can help minimize such adverse events and would also mitigate the risks of obstetrical complications related to thrombosis and anticoagulation, in addition

Hormonal contraceptive use and risk of pancreatic cancer-A cohort study among premenopausal women.

IMPORTANCE: The association between the use of hormonal contraceptive and pancreatic cancer among premenopausal women has until now been unclear. This is the first study to investigate the risk of pancreatic cancer in pre-menopausal women. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hormonal contraception increases the risk of developing pancreatic cancer in pre-menopausal women. DESIGN: A nationwide prospective cohort study followed all women in Denmark in the age range of 15-49 years without previous cancer or venous thrombosis from 1995 to 2014. The Danish National Prescription Registry provided indi

Different Effects of Oral Contraceptive and Dydrogesterone Treatment on Oxidative Stress Levels in Premenopausal Women.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to observe the changes in blood oxidative stress levels by oral contraceptive (OC) and/or dydrogesterone (DG) treatment. METHODS: A retrospective cohort of 27 premenopausal women with primary dysmenorrhea consisted of the OC treatment group (N = 17) and the DG treatment group (N = 10) by choice of the initial treatment. The OC group included two subgroups: patients with continuous OC treatment (treated for at least 15 months, N = 10) and patients with discontinuous OC treatment (switched to DG treatment after approximately 6 months of initial OC treatment:

Acupuncture in Premenopausal Women With Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder: A Prospective Cohort Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Female sexual dysfunction affects up to 43% of women in the United States and hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is the most common type; however, we lack treatment options showing improvement for this condition. AIMS: To investigate whether acupuncture therapy could improve HSDD. METHODS: Premenopausal women with a primary diagnosis of HSDD were included in a single-arm prospective pilot study that was approved by the institutional review board. After providing informed consent, subjects completed validated questionnaires. Participants underwent 25-minute twice-weekly ac

Hysterectomy risk in premenopausal-aged military veterans: associations with sexual assault and gynecologic symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Several gynecological conditions associated with hysterectomy, including abnormal bleeding and pelvic pain, have been observed at increased rates in women who have experienced sexual assault. Previous findings have suggested that one of the unique health care needs for female military veterans may be an increased prevalence of hysterectomy and that this increase may partially be due to their higher risk of sexual assault history and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although associations between trauma, PTSD, and gynecological symptoms have been identified, little work has been

Dietary Fat and Fiber Intakes Are Not Associated with Patterns of Urinary Estrogen Metabolites in Premenopausal Women.

BACKGROUND: Interindividual differences in the bioavailability of potentially carcinogenic estrogen and estrogen metabolites (EMs) may play a role in the risk of breast cancer. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether dietary intakes of fiber and fat influence premenopausal EM profiles through effects on estrogen synthesis, metabolism, or excretion. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 598 premenopausal women who participated in a reproducibility study (n = 109) or served as controls in a nested case-control study of breast cancer (n = 489) within the Nurses' Health Study II. Incidence of chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure in premenopausal women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer is increasingly reported in young premenopausal women in Asia. Adjuvant chemotherapy improves survival; however, it has a unique consequence of ovarian failure in premenopausal patients. OBJECTIVE: This study's aim was to find the incidence of chemotherapy-induced ovarian failure (CIOF) and reversible amenorrhea in premenopausal non-metastatic breast cancer patients. METHOD: This mixed retrospective and prospective study follows premenopausal breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy between 2008 and 2012. Patients in the prospective arm were followed up with

Examining the relationship between uterine fibroids and dyspareunia among premenopausal women in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Despite estimates of a high prevalence of deep dyspareunia (DD) among women in the United States, risk factors for this important area of sexual dysfunction have been largely understudied. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between uterine fibroids and the prevalence of DD. METHODS: We used data from the Uterine Fibroid Study (enrollment 1996-1999 in a U.S. metropolitan area). Participating women were ages 35-49 and were randomly selected from the membership rolls of a prepaid health plan. Women were asked to provide detailed health information incl

Iron nutrition and premenopausal women: effects of poor iron status on physical and neuropsychological performance.

Iron is a nutritionally essential trace element that functions through incorporation into proteins and enzymes, many of which contribute to physical and neuropsychological performance. Poor iron status, including iron deficiency (ID; diminished iron stores) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA; poor iron stores and diminished hemoglobin), affects billions of people worldwide. This review focuses on physical and neuropsychological outcomes associated with ID and IDA in premenopausal women, as the prevalence of ID and IDA is often greater in premenopausal women than other population demographics. The influence of estrogen therapies on bone mineral density in premenopausal women with anorexia nervosa and amenorrhea.

Low bone mineral density is one of the primary risks of chronic amenorrhea, and the effects of potentially long-term menstrual disruption on bone mass are serious concerns for individuals with a past or current anorexia nervosa (AN) diagnosis. As such, estrogen therapies are frequently used to address amenorrhea associated with AN. A systematic review of the literature was conducted to examine the effectiveness of estrogen therapies on bone mineral density in women with amenorrhea. Data regarding the effectiveness of oral contraceptives were of low quality and mixed, with the majority of studi

Patterns of nonmasslike enhancement at screening breast MR imaging of high-risk premenopausal women.

Current U.S. recommendations for breast cancer screening of women with at least a 20%-25% lifetime risk of developing breast cancer include contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the breasts. The cancer detection rate in high-risk women undergoing screening MR imaging is approximately 10 times higher than that in normal-risk women undergoing screening mammography. Many of these high-risk women commence MR imaging screening while they are premenopausal, when the breasts are most influenced by cyclical hormonal changes. Healthy premenopausal breast tissue enhances in a cyc

Misoprostol prior to hysteroscopy in premenopausal and post-menopausal women. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have examined the effect of misoprostol prior to hysteroscopy for cervical dilatation, no solid conclusion has been reached. We therefore set out to perform a meta-analysis of RCTs. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, the ISI Web of Science and the Cochrane Library to identify RCTs comparing misoprostol versus placebo or control prior to hysteroscopy. No restrictions on language or time were applied. Relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for all dichotomous outcomes, whereas mean differences (MDs) and

Serum vitamin D level and bone mineral density in premenopausal Egyptian women with fibromyalgia.

Patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) have impaired mobility and therefore get less sunlight exposure, we postulated that they may be at increased risk of developing osteoporosis (OP). The aim of this study was to assess and compare serum vitamin D level and bone mineral density (BMD) value in patients with primary FMS (PFMS) and healthy controls. A total of 50 patients with PFMS participated in this case-control study, and 50 healthy females who were age-matched to the patients were used as the control group. Venous blood samples collected from all subjects were used to evaluate serum 25-

Optical spectroscopy of the breast in premenopausal women reveals tissue variation with changes in age and parity.

PURPOSE: Variations during breast tissue development can influence later breast cancer risk. In particular, prolonged nulliparity increases risk. The authors used optical spectroscopy to compare breast tissue in 115 nulliparous women aged 31-40 (group 2) to 140 nulliparous women aged 18-21 (group 1), and also to 36 parous women aged 31-40 (group 3), and to evaluate the relationship between IGF-1 and optical breast tissue properties. IGF-1 has been linked in particular to premenopausal breast cancer. METHODS: The authors measured the transmission spectra from 625 to 1050 nm wavelengths in each
