Effect of eucalyptus oil on Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis growth.

OBJECTIVES: There is a significant apprehension in medicine and dentistry concerning the emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens, as it composes a significant threat to global health, particularly oral health. The growing concern that oral pathogens may develop resistance against standard preventive measures raises the need for alternative measures to prevent these pathogens' growth without inducing microbial resistance. Therefore, this study aims to assess the antibacterial properties of eucalyptus oil (EO) against two main oral disease pathogens, Streptococcus mutans, and Enterococci fae

A novel multidisciplinary approach for the treatment of an intruded immature permanent incisor.

The optimal treatment for intruded permanent teeth has not yet been determined. The ideal treatment option is the one with the lowest probability of developing complications such as external root resorption and marginal bone loss. Each case should be considered individually, bearing in mind the severity of the intrusion, the stage of root development, and tooth mobility. Management of an intruded permanent tooth may consist of: (1) observation for spontaneous eruption; (2) surgical crown uncovering; (3) orthodontic extrusion (with or without prior luxation of the intruded tooth); (4) and parti

Issues in financing dental care for the elderly.

The elderly make up an increasingly larger segment of the patient population in dental practices. This article reviews recent epidemiologic, demographic, and health services research, and concludes that significant segments of the elderly are at high risk for oral disease and/or limited access to dental treatment, and consequently warrant classification as high-risk groups for policy considerations. It then proposes policy options to the dental community and public decision makers. Oral care can be viewed as having three components. Two basic components are the primary care component--which in

[Use of experimental animals in caries research].

Animal models have been used extensively in biomedical research. The choice of the most appropriate model for a given research project is fundamental and depends upon specific characteristics of the animal. In the field of Preventive Dentistry the rodent species possess certain advantages which make them extremely useful in caries research and in dental plague pathogenicity. In caries research, rats have been used successfully to study anticaries efficacy of chemical agents, immunization, cariogenicity of diet, maturation of enamel and bacterial involvement in caries process. In this paper the…

Dentists' and Dental Assistants' Perceptions of the New Profession of Dental Hygienist in France.

INTRODUCTION: The profession of dental hygienists was created in 1913. However, it does not exist yet in France. Currently, an initiative has begun with creating a high-level professional upgrading of dental assistants into Oral Prophylaxis Assistant, similar to dental hygienists. METHODS: In order to determine the limits and levers influencing this new qualification and its interests in paediatric dentistry, a mixed methods study (surveys and semi-structured interviews) was conducted. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: 119 dental assistants and 34 dentists responded to the survey. Among these, 7 denta

Enamel Remineralizing Agents: State of the Art.

Dental caries remains the most prevalent chronic disease worldwide, yet early enamel lesions are reversible if managed with appropriate remineralizing agents. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence on remineralizing agents, their mechanisms of action, and clinical applications, with a focus on dental materials used in preventive and minimally invasive dentistry. Traditional fluoride-based approaches enhance remineralization through fluorapatite formation; however, their effectiveness is limited when calcium and phosphate bioavailability is insufficient. Biomimetic agents, including

Diet's Cariogenicity and Healthfulness Index (DCHI) - A Novel, Comprehensive Index for Children.

BACKGROUND: Realistic and tailored dietary advice plays a vital role in Preventive Dentistry. An appropriate diet analysis forms the basis for precise dietary advice. Analysis of diet for its cariogenicity is a complex process. Performing a meaningful diet analysis is a challenge in routine clinical practice. Currently, very few tools are available for clinicians to assess children's diet relating to caries risk. The current scientific paper presents a novel index that assesses the cariogenicity and healthfulness of a child's diet objectively and guides the professional to achieve pragmatic di…

Use of Tuberosity Connective Tissue for Root Coverage and Ridge Augmentation: Background and Technique.

Excess tissue often exists distal to the upper second molar, creating a pocket in the maxillary tuberosity. When removed from this location, this tissue can serve as an optimal piece of connective tissue (CT), helping to both prevent periodontal disease and treat periodontal recession while also aiding in restorative dentistry. This tissue is an ideal CT for root coverage and soft-tissue ridge-augmentation grafting. This article provides an overview of CT grafting, including a discussion of tuberosity CT and its advantages versus palatal CT. The authors describe two techniques for harvesting t
