Gastric Trichobezoars in Children and Adolescents: A Single-Center Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Trichobezoars are masses composed of ingested hair, typically affecting children and adolescents with trichotillomania and trichophagia. Their nonspecific presentation often delays diagnosis and may result in complications such as malnutrition or gastric perforation. This study describes our experience in managing pediatric trichobezoars at a tertiary pediatric center in Europe. METHODS: Retrospective single-center case series of gastric trichobezoar cases in children treated at a tertiary pediatric hospital in Brussels, Belgium, between 2020 and 2025. Data extracted from electron

Long-acting injectable antipsychotics for prevention and management of violent behaviour in psychotic patients.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It has been well established that long-term antipsychotic treatment prevents relapse, lowers number of rehospitalisations, and also effectively reduces violent behaviour. Although violent behaviour is not a typical manifestation of schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders, the diagnosis of psychosis increases the overall risk of violence. One of the few modifiable factors of violence risk is adherence with medication. In contrast, non-adherence with drug treatment and subsequent relapse increases risk of violent acts. Non-adherence can be addressed partially by long-acti

Mechanisms of illness progression in the recurrent affective disorders.

Along with genetic vulnerability, multiple environmental factors convey liability to illness progression, including: (1) distal and proximal stressors; (2) recurrence of episodes; and (3) comorbid cocaine abuse. Recurrence of each of these can increase responsivity (sensitize) to themselves and cross-sensitize to the two other factors and drive illness progression as seen clinically in increases in cycle acceleration, severity or duration of episodes, treatment refractoriness, disability, cognitive dysfunction, and premature death. Some mechanisms appear common to all three types of sensitizat

The characteristics of androgen receptor splice variant 7 in the treatment of hormonal sensitive prostate cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Dear Editor, The Covid-19 pandemic affected human life globally, inducing much stress on daily living (Çakıroğlu et al. 2020). Although assessments of general mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic have been widely reported, there is not adequate research on how schizophrenia patients have been affected. According to the World Health Organization (2020), individuals with chronic diseases who do not pay attention to their personal hygiene and the rules of protection from COVID-19 have a higher risk of getting infected than the healthy individuals who observe these measures. It is well known

Treating Benzodiazepine Withdrawal in a Bridge Clinic.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepine-involved overdose deaths are rising, driven by increasing use of nonprescribed benzodiazepine pills. For patients who wish to stop nonprescribed benzodiazepine use, rapid inpatient tapers are typically the only option to treat benzodiazepine withdrawal. Substance use disorder bridge clinics can provide the high-touch care needed to manage outpatient benzodiazepine tapers in patients at high risk due to other substance use disorders. OBJECTIVE: Describe the implementation and short-term outcomes of an outpatient benzodiazepine taper protocol to treat benzodiazepine w

Maternal and neonatal complications of pregnant women with bipolar disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Confidence in pregnancy outcome data for women with bipolar disorder is compromised by small cohort sizes. However, comprehensive national data have been published over the last decade, but no quantitative synthesis has been established to determine the factors associated with complications in these women. Our goal is to summarise the evidence of population-based data on obstetric complications and neonatal outcomes in women with bipolar disorder compared to women without bipolar disorder. METHODS: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (P

Motivational interviewing and interaction skills training for parents to change cannabis use in young adults with recent-onset schizophrenia: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cannabis use by people with schizophrenia has been found to be associated with family distress and poor clinical outcomes. Interventions to reduce drug use in this patient group have had limited efficacy. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a novel intervention for parents of young adults with recent-onset schizophrenia consisting of family-based motivational interviewing and interaction skills (Family Motivational Intervention, FMI) in comparison with routine family support (RFS). METHOD: In a trial with 75 patients who used cannabis and received treatment for recent-onset

Psychiatric hospitalization of homeless patients over 55 years old. Retrospective study in the largest French psychiatric hospital.

To date, there have been only a few scientific studies about characteristics of homeless patients hospitalized in psychiatric wards, and even fewer about the elderly. This is despite the fact that France, like all Western countries, is facing a general aging of its population and an increasing prevalence of homelessness. The objective of this single-centre retrospective study is to compare the sociodemographic data, psychiatric and somatic diagnoses, and hospitalization characteristics of patients over 55 years of age consecutively admitted to the Groupe Hospitalo-Universitaire Paris Psychiatr

Treatment-Resistant Depression as a Dynamic Continuum: A Consensus Panel Report on Mechanism-Informed Pharmacologic Sequencing.

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) affects a substantial proportion of patients with major depressive disorder and is associated with significant functional impairment, elevated suicide risk, and increased treatment complexity. In December 2025, a multidisciplinary expert consensus panel convened in Boston, Massachusetts, to address contemporary challenges in the identification and pharmacologic management of TRD. The panel concluded that TRD is best understood as a dynamic continuum reflecting the interaction between illness biology, patient complexity, and cumulative treatment history-not

Aggressive and self-harming behaviour among psychiatric inpatients in a specialised prison hospital: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Aggressive behaviour and self-harming behaviour are common psychiatric emergencies in correctional settings, yet little is known about the factors distinguishing these behavioural presentations in psychiatric inpatients. This study compared the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of psychiatric inpatients presenting with aggressive or self-harming behaviour in a specialised prison hospital. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, routinely collected data from 643 psychiatric inpatients admitted to the Berlin Prison Hospital (2010-2016) were analysed. Patients presen
