The Critical Role of Community Pharmacists in Blood Pressure Monitoring.

Arterial hypertension is the most important modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. In some countries, pharmacists' patient-centered approach has become a common practice, and their role in supporting the management of cardiovascular disease has been successfully developed for years. In particular, recent findings have confirmed benefits of pharmacist-provided hypertension care. Current guidelines emphasize the need for regular BP measurements in subjects age 40 years and older, who are at increased risk of hypertension. A panel of experts in cardiology, hypertensiol

Antimicrobial Mouthwashes: An Overview of Mechanisms-What Do We Still Need to Know?

This narrative literature review is the first in a 6-section supplement on the role of mouthwashes in oral care. This introduction briefly summarises current knowledge on antimicrobial mechanisms, relating to some of the most common over-the-counter mouthwash products available worldwide: chlorhexidine, hydrogen peroxide, cetylpyridinium chloride, povidone iodine, and essential oils. The aim of this first article is to describe how mouthwashes "kill" pathogenic microbes when used adjunctively and thus provide a basis for their widespread use to manage key oral diseases, namely caries, gingivit

Black staining: an overview for the general dental practitioner.

'Black stain' is a form of extrinsic staining affecting the buccal and palatal surfaces of primary and permanent teeth. It presents as an incomplete line of dark dots formed at the cervical third of the tooth, typically following the gingival margin and not extending to the proximal areas. There is no consensus on its prevalence, though it appears to vary between 2-20%, with an equal male and female distribution. Although the aetiology is not completely understood, its microflora is dominated by chromogenic bacteria, such as actinomyces and prevotella melaninogenica, and there appears to be a

Dental material allergies and oral soft tissue reactions.

Dental materials can cause reactions to the oral mucosa and present to the general dental practitioner. These are often referred to as 'allergies' but are frequently lichenoid reactions. Most of these are related to dental amalgam restorations and can be remedied by replacing the restoration with another suitable material. Other metals, including gold, palladium, nickel and chrome, have also been reported to trigger mucosal changes. Less commonly, issues arise from other restorative materials, including denture acrylics, composites and glass polyalkenoates. Reactions are also reported due to e

A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted between 1 April and 30 October 2019 using a structured questionnaire. Information was gathered on demographics, professional characteristics, and practices regarding antibiotic prescription for both therapeutic and prophylactic purposes. Of the 1,250 invited DPs, 563 answered the general questionnaire (response

Frequency and characteristics of medical emergencies in an Australian dental school: A retrospective study.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: The frequency of medical emergencies in a dental setting is relatively low. However, most dental treatment occurs outside of a hospital setting; thus the time to respond to a life-threatening situation is crucial. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and characteristics of medical emergencies that occurred at the Griffith University Dental Clinic over a 6-year period. METHODS: Data involving medical emergencies was collected at a dental school between January 2014 and December 2019. Data was obtained from the risk incident reporting system (GSafe), and desc

Exploring community pharmacists' clinical decision-making using think aloud and protocol analysis.

BACKGROUND: Clinical decision-making (CDM) is the dynamic process used to gather, interpret and evaluate data to select an evidence-based choice of action. As the role of the pharmacist becomes more patient-focused, effective CDM skills are increasingly vital to achieve patient outcomes centred on quality, safety and efficacy. OBJECTIVE: To examine how community pharmacists reason through a clinical problem and what factors assist or hinder decision-making. METHOD: Fifteen New Zealand registered community pharmacists in central Auckland were presented with a bacterial conjunctivitis case. Th

Exploring oral healthcare management across Australian community pharmacies using case vignettes.

OBJECTIVES: In Australia, more than 80% of pharmacists and pharmacy assistants are consulted for oral healthcare advice up to five times or more each week. This study assesses Australian community pharmacy staff's (pharmacists and pharmacy assistants) ability to recognize and manage common oral health presentations using case vignettes, and determine whether appropriate identification and management are associated with self-reported confidence. METHODS: Five oral healthcare case vignettes were developed based on previous literature by a multidisciplinary team of dental and pharmacy practition

DESIGN: A parallel-group, randomized controlled trial of a pharmacist-staffed, telephone-based program for managing hyperuricemia vs usual care. Trial duration was 26 weeks. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary outcome measure was achieving sUA levels at or below 6 mg/dL at the 26-week visit. Secondary outcome was mean change in sUA levels in the co

Is there a role for pharmacists in multidisciplinary health-care teams at community outreach events for the homeless?

Homelessness is a significant public health problem. It is well-documented that people experiencing homelessness exhibit more serious illnesses and have poorer health than the general population. The provision of services and interventions by health-care professionals, including pharmacists, may make a simple yet important contribution to improved health outcomes in those experiencing homelessness, but evidence of roles and interventions is limited and variable. In Australia, the Queensland University of Technology Health Clinic connects with the homeless community by taking part in community

[Risk management: relationship with the patient's relatives, who does what?].

Risk management is the systematic process of identification, evaluation and treatment of current and potential risks. In the last decades it has acquired a significant importance also in the medical field, where it aims to increase patient' safety, to reduce adverse events and costs, thus improving patients' outcomes. Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a clinical field where operative procedures are carried out; some of them may have complications, which can lead to legal cases; among such techniques endoscopic ultrasonography is acceptably safe. The aim of the article is to highlight some aspects
