The craniofacial proportions and laryngeal position in monkeys and man of different ages (a morphometric study based on CT-scans and radiographs).

Using CT-scans and radiographs, sagittal planes through the head and neck of men and monkeys at different ages were analyzed morphometrically for their craniofacial proportions and laryngeal position. In monkeys, a continuous prognathic growth of the splanchnocranium was found within the first 3 years. The neurocranial growth, however, was markedly reduced. The larynx of monkeys showed only a slight descensus with age. In contrast to this, the growth of the splanchnocranium in man did not change the craniofacial proportions significantly. The larynx, however, descended markedly within the firs

[46,XX/46,XX,del (10) (p13)/47,XX,+r/47,XX,del (10) (p13), + r mosaicism and partial trisomy 10p phenotype (author's transl)].

The mosaicism 46,XX/46,XX,del(10)(p13)/47,XX, +r/47,XX,del(10)(p13), +r was found in the lymphocytes and the fibroblasts of a patient with the following : profound mental retardation; craniofacial dysmorphism with frontal bossing, fine eyebrows, a large hypoplastic nasal bridge, prognathism of the upper jaw, thick lips; a long and thin neck; congenital heart disease; skeletal malformations, with club feet; and hypotonia and lax ligaments. These malformations, compatible with the trisomy 10p syndrome, suggest that the supernumerary ring chromosome was composed of 10p material. An increase of HK…

Comparison of the skeletal stability after mandibular counter-clockwise rotation in three surgical procedures.

The treatment of mandibular deformities with an anterior open bite is challenging. In this study, skeletal stability after mandibular osteotomies was evaluated to determine the best treatment for mandibular prognathism with an anterior open bite in three procedures: intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO), conventional sagittal split ramus osteotomy (conv-SSRO), and SSRO without bone fixation (nonfix-SSRO). Patients who underwent mandibular osteotomy to correct skeletal mandibular protrusion were included. Changes in skeletal and soft tissues were assessed using lateral cephalograms taken be…

The compensation of dental arch and teeth in patients with skeletal protrusion and deviation of mandible.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the compensation of dental arch and teeth in patients with skeletal protrusion and deviation of mandible. METHODS: Measurement of 11 dental models was performed, midline of palate was defined as central line, the distance of every contact point to the midline was measured in each side. The dental arch symmetry was observed. Occlusion plane was defined as conference plane, the buccal or lingual inclination of posterior teeth in upper and lower arch was measured. RESULTS: Upper arch was asymmetry in these patients, the arch width of deviated side (the side that the ch

[Mandibular fracture: an unusual complication following osteotomy of the chin].

A case of a median mandibular fracture with extensive osteolysis 8 weeks following a reduction and protrusion genioplasty is reported. A porous hydroxylapatite block, Interpore 200, was used for contour augmentation at the labiomental fold. The weakening effect of the osteotomy, a foreign body-related chronic osteomyelitis, and repetitive angulation of the mandible during mastication play a role in the pathogenesis of this fracture. Treatment consisted of removal of the porous hydroxylapatite block, removal of the screws and plates, surgical debridement of the necrotic tissue, antibiotics, and

The "happy puppet" syndrome in two siblings.

Two siblings with the "happy puppet" syndrome are presented. Their clinical features are quite similar and closely resemble those of previously reported cases. These features include severe mental retardation, epileptic seizures, easily provoked and prolonged paroxysms of laughter, atactic jerky movements, hypotonia, large mandible with prognathia, and 2-3 cps spike and wave activity in the EEG. The occurrence of this syndrome in the two siblings suggests a genetic etiology possible as an autosomal recessive trait.

Maxillofacial Fractures After Le Fort I and Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy Using Two 2-Hole Miniplate Fixation.

Maxillofacial trauma occurring shortly after orthognathic surgery has been rarely reported. The authors present a 21-year-old man with mandibular prognathism who underwent Le Fort I osteotomy combined with bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSO). The mandible was stabilized with two 2-hole titanium miniplates placed along the superior border on each side. Eight weeks postoperatively, he sustained high-energy facial trauma in a motorcycle accident, resulting in fractures of the mandibular symphysis, bilateral condyles, and maxilla, but notably no fractures at the osteotomy sites. Open r…

Customized chin cup: enhancing pediatric compliance in Class III orthodontic treatment - a case report.

This case report emphasizes the role of a customized chin cup in the management of Class III malocclusion in pediatric patients, emphasizing its contribution to improved compliance and treatment outcomes. Class III malocclusion, often characterized by maxillary retrusion and mandibular prognathism, presents unique challenges in orthodontics, particularly in young patients. Reverse pull facemask therapy is a well-established method to correct maxillary retrusion, but the success of this approach heavily depends on patient compliance. Prefabricated chin cups, commonly used in facemasks, frequent…

Research Review of Myhre Syndrome.

This research review of Myhre syndrome is a summary of published articles which provide a valuable resource for readers, researchers, and future authors. It traces the evolution of the Laryngotracheal-Arthropathy-Prognathism-Short Stature (LAPS) syndrome to the current eponym of Myhre syndrome. These allelic disorders are caused by pathogenic variants in SMAD4. After the initial report over 40 years ago, the steady publication of case reports and small series was accelerated following the discovery of the pathogenic variants in SMAD4. The articles in this review include numerous case reports a…

Results showed consistent craniofacial abnormalities, including midface retrusion, mandibular prognathism, and malocclusion. Cephalometric analysis revealed specific patterns indicating growth deficiency at the posterior base of the skull, maxillary retroposition, and an anterior accommodation of the mandibular condyles in the glenoid fossa. These findi …

Treatment of the Patient With Crouzon Syndrome With Orthognathic Surgery.

Crouzon syndrome is a genetic disease that is transferred by autosomal dominant inheritance. Patients with this syndrome have craniosynostosis, hypertelorism, orbital proptosis, mid-face hypoplasia, mandibular prognathism, and concave facial profile. A number of surgical treatments are used to improve facial contours, and to correct dental and maxillary relationships. Orthognathic surgery is routinely used in the treatment of these patients. We present a female patient with Crouzon syndrome treated with Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. Previously, surgically assisted rapid max…

Dandy-Walker syndrome with severe velopharyngeal dysfunction: a contraindication for Le Fort I surgery?

Dandy-Walker syndrome is a rare congenital brain deformation. Most symptoms are related with fourth ventricle and skull base malformations. Quite often, symptoms develop from infancy or progress rapidly. Cerebellar dysfunction, lack of muscle coordination, and skull deformities involving eye movement might be present. There are several Dandy-Walker syndrome complex types. We present a 23-year-old patient who had a severe dentofacial deformity with mandibular prognathism and extremely undeveloped maxillary bone resulting in palatopharyngeal and velopharyngeal dysfunction with complete lack of s…

The Ardipithecus ramidus skull and its implications for hominid origins.

The highly fragmented and distorted skull of the adult skeleton ARA-VP-6/500 includes most of the dentition and preserves substantial parts of the face, vault, and base. Anatomical comparisons and micro-computed tomography-based analysis of this and other remains reveal pre-Australopithecus hominid craniofacial morphology and structure. The Ardipithecus ramidus skull exhibits a small endocranial capacity (300 to 350 cubic centimeters), small cranial size relative to body size, considerable midfacial projection, and a lack of modern African ape-like extreme lower facial prognathism. Its short p…

A comparison of postoperative hypoesthesia between two types of sagittal split ramus osteotomy and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy, using the trigeminal somatosensory-evoked potential method.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate hypoesthesia of the lower lip using trigeminal somatosensory-evoked potential following 2 types of sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO). There were 30 patients with mandibular prognathism, with and without asymmetry, who were divided into three groups: the Obwegeser method (Ob) group, the Obwegeser-Dal Pont method (ODP) group and the intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) group. The trigeminal somatosensory-evoked potential was recorded in the region of the lower lip and evaluated preoperatively and pos…

Masticatory function and neurosensory disturbance after mandibular correction by bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy: a comparison between miniplate and bicortical screw rigid internal fixation.

Bilateral sagittal split osteotomy is commonly used to treat mandibular prognathism. Several fixation methods for bony segments have been described. The present study compared masticatory function and neurosensory recovery patterns after mandibular correction between two methods of rigid fixation, bicortical screw (n = 38) and monocortical miniplate (n = 32). Patients who had undergone bilateral sagittal split osteotomy for Class III malocclusion were reviewed, and masticatory function and neurosensory recovery were studied with the appropriate indicators at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperative…

Mild phenotype in a 15-year-old boy with Pallister-Killian syndrome.

Pallister-Killian syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by multiple congenital anomalies, coarse face, pigmentary skin changes, seizures, severe mental retardation, and the presence of an extra metacentric chromosome i(12p) confined to skin fibroblasts only. Here, we report on an unusual case of i(12p) in a 15-year-old boy presenting with mild mental retardation, minor facial features (long face, prognathism, short neck), normal weight, length, and OFC parameters as well as hyperpigmented streaks. The boy attended normal school until the age of 14 years. Because of hyperpigmented stripes, …
