BACKGROUND: Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is common among young athletes and can impact knee stability and control. Wearing proprioceptive knee braces can improve knee control and may reduce the risk factors associated with injury and re-injury, although the effect of such braces after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) is unclear.
RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aimed to determine the effect of proprioceptive knee bracing on knee control and subjective rating of participants post ACLR during three dynamic tasks.
METHODS: Fifteen participants 2-10 years post ACLR performed a slow step

BACKGROUND: Apnea of Prematurity (AOP) is common, affecting the majority of infants born at <34 weeks gestational age. Apnea and periodic breathing are accompanied by intermittent hypoxia (IH). Animal and human studies demonstrate that IH exposure contributes to multiple pathologies, including retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), injury to sympathetic ganglia regulating cardiovascular action, impaired pancreatic islet cell and bone development, cerebellar injury, and neurodevelopmental disabilities. Current standard of care for AOP/IH includes prone positioning, positive pressure ventilation, and

Mobility and balance impairments are a hallmark of multiple sclerosis (MS), affecting nearly half of patients at presentation and resulting in decreased activity and participation, falls, injuries, and reduced quality of life. A growing body of work suggests that balance impairments in people with mild MS are primarily the result of deficits in proprioception, the ability to determine body position in space in the absence of vision. A better understanding of the pathophysiology of balance disturbances in MS is needed to develop evidence-based rehabilitation approaches. The purpose of the curre…

BACKGROUND: Impaired proprioceptive performance is a significant clinical issue for many who suffer osteoarthritis (OA) and is a risk factor for falls and other liabilities. This study was designed to evaluate weight-bearing distribution in a rat model of OA and to determine whether changes also occur in muscle afferent neurones.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Intracellular recordings were made in functionally identified dorsal root ganglion neurones in acute electrophysiological experiments on the anaesthetized animal following measurements of hind limb weight bearing in the incapacitance t

The H-reflex habituates at relatively low frequency (10 Hz) stimulation in the intact spinal cord, but loss of descending inhibition resulting from spinal cord transection reduces this habituation. There is a return towards a normal pattern of low-frequency habituation in the reflex activity with cycling exercise of the affected hind limbs. This implies that repetitive passive stretching of the muscles in spinalized animals and the accompanying stimulation of large (Group I and II) proprioceptive fibers has modulatory effects on spinal cord reflexes after injury. To test this hypothesis, we in

BACKGROUND: The relation between impairment of sensorimotor function and occurrence of phantom limb syndrome (PLS) during regional anesthesia has not been described. This study assessed the temporal relation between PLS and the progression of sensorimotor impairment during placement of a brachial plexus nerve block.
METHODS: Fifty-two patients had their arm randomly placed either alongside their body (group A) or in 90 degrees abduction (group B) immediately after brachial plexus nerve block placement. Responses to pin prick, cold, heat, touch, proprioception, and voluntary movement were asse…

A central problem in motor control, in the representation of space, and in the perception of body schema is how the brain encodes the relative positions of body parts. According to psychophysical studies, this sense of limb position depends heavily on vision. However, almost nothing is currently known about how the brain uses vision to determine or represent the location of the arm or any other body part. The present experiment shows that the position of the arm is represented in the premotor cortex of the monkey (Macaca fascicularis) brain by means of a convergence of visual cues and proprioc

Both ankle joints of 14 uninjured volunteers and 16 patients with unstable ankle joints were tested regarding their proprioceptive capabilities. Three tests were used for the study: single-leg stance test, single-leg jumping course test, angle-reproduction test. The influence of three stabilization devices (lace-on-brace, stirrup-brace, taping) on the proprioceptivity of stable and unstable ankle joints were evaluated as well. The scores of the single-leg jumping course test without any stabilizing device (category "standard") ranged between 8.06 and 13.68 (10.65 +/- 1.29). In the categories "

A 47-year-old woman developed a progressive sensory deficit of the upper limbs. She lost perception of joint position, vibratory sense, skin-writing and stereognosis. Repeated tests by several examiners, up to 10 years after the onset, demonstrated normal pain and temperature sensation. The right hypoglossal nerve was involved at a late stage of the disease. CT and MRI showed an intramedullary cavity from C1 to T7. Somato-sensory evoked potentials from stimulation of the median nerves confirmed the bilateral impairment of the lemniscal pathways.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Upper-extremity proprioception contributes to coordinated reaching and grasping, which are critical for functional independence; however, evidence on upper-limb proprioception in children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) remains limited. Therefore, we aimed to compare wrist proprioception in children with DMD versus healthy peers and to examine its relationship with upper-limb function.
METHODS: Cross-sectional observational study conducted at a pediatric neuromuscular clinic, enrolling children aged 6-15 years who were able to sit independently. Wrist proprioc…

BACKGROUND: Proprioceptive impairments of the upper limb are common after stroke. These impairments are not typically addressed during assessment or rehabilitation. Currently, most robotic paradigms for training of the upper limb have focused solely on improving motor function or have targeted proprioception in individuals with combined use of visual feedback. Our goal was to design a training paradigm that directly targets proprioception of the upper limb, while minimizing reliance on other sensory information to improve sensorimotor function after stroke.
METHODS: In this pilot study, 5 ind…

Manual therapy, such as spinal manipulation (SM), is commonly used to treat non-specific chronic low back pain (CLBP), although its mechanisms remain poorly understood. It has been hypothesized that the mechanical forces applied during spinal manipulation (SM) influence proprioceptive function, which is often impaired in patients with CLBP. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a single SM intervention on lumbar proprioceptive function and its potential relationship with analgesic effects in patients with CLBP. In a single-blind randomized controlled trial, data from 142 adults with or

Muscle spindles are stretch receptors lying deep within the muscle belly involved in detecting changes in muscle length and playing a fundamental role in motor control, posture and synchronized gait. They are made up of an external capsule surrounding three to five intrafusal muscle fibres and a nuclear bag complex. Dysfunction of muscle spindles leads to abnormal proprioceptor function, which has been linked to aberrant bone and cartilage development, scoliosis, kyphosis and joint contractures. RYR1, the gene encoding the calcium release channel of the sarcoplasmic reticulum, is the most comm
